So 12 weeks out from the Olympic tournament Annalie Longo is spending her Saturdays banging in 6 goals in her teams 23-0 romp over a bunch of 14-16 year olds in the so-called Mainland Womens Premier competition. They've also won games 12-2, 9-0, 9-0, 8-0 so far. Anyone else think this is a good idea?

I think you'll find Jane Barnett has relocated to Auckland and is training with the wider Football Ferns squad.

Quite a few members of said squad, (e.g. Jasmine Pereira, Aimee Phillips, to mention a couple), aren't playing for their clubs this season. I understand this is a player management initiative, mainly to avoid burn-out.

It's something that's been done before, a few years ago, with plenty of accompanying grumbling - after all, players, at the end of the day, just want to play, and we spectators would far rather see them in action and enjoying their football, as opposed to keeping us company on the sidelines on a Sunday (or Saturday if you're in Christchurch or Dunedin).

Cheers,

JR

Aah, so that explains M.Moore as being registered for Cashmere Technical but only flying down for important games. Hmm....

Player management initiative to stop players playing? is this why they have only won 9 out of 36 games in the last 2 two years?

It also seems odd when they have apparently encouraged Cushla Litchwark to play for a mens team on Saturdays and well as her clubs Women's team on Sundays.

Depending on who you select, you could start an eleven with about 973 caps between them.

That's an average of 88.45 caps per player.

Nayler at goalkeeper brings the average down with "only" 38 caps since she hasn't long been the number one.

Rosie White is only 22 (23 in two weeks) but already has 79 caps. She has been a Football Fern for seven years and four months already (debut January 2009).  If she plays regularly for the Ferns until she's about 34 (about another eleven years) she could end up with 200 caps or more.

There was a good question of why the fixture even existed.

Even if the Matlidas thumped them you'd have good reason to question why the game was a thing in the first place in regards to the teams image.  Just seeing a headline like that could stop people caring about womens football as a level inferior to the under 15's comp, even if it was a weakened squad.

I dunno, just seems dumb.  Should have played the closest w-league team or something, if they got thumped in that game you'd just be questioning the recruiting.

The people who care about womens football already know and understand why an U15 boys team of decent quality can beat a womans international side. Those who would find it as a reason to stop caring are not the sorts of people that the womans game would worry about losing anyway.

All around the world womans international sides will from time to time have a training match against an age group boys side. Its been done here a number of times with our various age group womens international sides having closed door games against boys team. Its nothing new. Again, if you understand the difference between mens and womens football and why those differences exist then these sorts of training games wont have you batting an eyelid. Those sorts of games arent dumb, they are done for a purpose.  Dumb is not being able to work out why those types of games are played.

very outside. Hard to see us beating/drawing the US or France, even if we stumble into goals that have been hard to come by, and as someone on here once pointed out, the third-place teams in the other pools should get to thrash Zimbabwe and South Africa and thus finish stronger than us or Colombia.

Will take solving the goals issue (White, Wilkinson, Longo front three, please) AND a big dose of luck.

Scoring goals is the perennial problem for the Womens team: only Wilkinson of the three you mentioned has a good strike rate(72/23 goals). Both Longo and White in particular have mediocre records(81/6 & 71/14). I exempt Longo from criticism because she's a midfielder really; however White's goal return is pretty poor for a player who is frequently " bigged up ". Interestingly, Wilkinson has the best record, but is arguably the most limited player of the three...

Longo spend most of her FF time in midfield and not the front three - played there twice at Cypus Cup and we supposedly had our best two attacking games then. White's record is poor, but lots of those appearances are as first attacker off the bench and still v young.

...wow what a dick.  I'm guessing in your opinion that smart people just talk down to people you see as dumb instead of explaining things.  Because smart people are people who cant explain something but just shark on people in forums for having an opinion.  Even if the opinion may be misinformed or wrong, to you it makes more sense to be a condescending prick than to help inform misinformed people.

To summarize your post: Smart people know the thing so don't say it, dumb people don't know the thing and don't get told it.  If your smart your smart and make condescending posts, if you're dumb your dumb and don't need to know things.

come on mr smart and almighty person, what is it about males under the age of 15 that helps an adult woman's international squad in a way that isn't condescending that an adult professional football club from the same catchment area couldn't achieve?

"Those who would find it as a reason to stop caring are not the sorts of people that the womans game would worry about losing anyway."

Oh OK and do you represent all woman's football supporters with that view?  I just would like to understand if its a common opinion among woman's football fans that they don't want more supporters, and as such more money in the woman's game.  I mean I would like to see our woman's teams make way more money and the only way that happens is with more viewers and headlines that may undermine the level of skill in the tournament is something I see as an issue, as sometimes or occasional fans (fans that may just flick on the TV because its on) can add up to big numbers.  Its interesting to see you'd rather it didn't grow by turning those fans into potentially long terms supported and instead snobbing them off.

The womens game keeps growing around the world and it will continue to do so even if there are these results happening.

Answer this one .

These games have been happening for a very long time so if it hasnt hindered the growth in the past why would it do so now?

Well it would depend on hindering.  What constitutes growth? and is their a peak popularity it can hit?

If that peak popularity is below where it could be why would you be happy with that?

Let take a real world example.  Football Eurosnobs.  The number of people I have spoken to that doesn't watch the ASB prem or the A League, the reasoning is always the level of football isn't as high in other comps.

In fact Sky used to pay for the EPL, but didn't pay for the top NZ league.  So you are saying without money and exposure it could keep growing in popularity when a regular perception I encountered was its not worth while as its a lower level of football and there will be no limit on its growth?

I would say when you say x sport doesn't need y fans you are limiting its potential popularity, no matter what sport, or league int hat sport and I think that's dumb.

Whereas you think that's a good idea, and I don't see how.

but most importantly you still haven't explained the value of having international womens teams being beaten by under 15 regional mens squads.

OK,

the main differences between womens and mens football come down to physical differences. Mostly strength. Strength in terms of power when accelerating, jumping or shielding.  Boys start to overtake women in football in these attributes roughly around 13-14 years of age.

The importance of this isnt in terms of physical competition but in terms of speed, ability to change direction faster, acceleration and recovery. Recovery is important because after a burst of output the boys are able to recover the dynamic movements a hint faster than the women.

In terms of football quality and pace of movement it means that 13-14 year old boys are capable of physically out doing women.  If you take a bunch of talented 13-14 year old boys their physical advantages mean that they should generally be able to outplay the women if they have had a decent team coach.

The advantage for women in preparation for internationals is that they have to react faster and act faster than they would if playing a regional womens rep side. this is helpful in tuning up a womens team when preparing for an international tournament.  They end up with a meaningful workout. The reality woth womans football around the world at the moment is that the depth still isnt there so a National team in most cases will thump a regional womens side. Getting tough preparation games is useful, vital and expected. Its been going on for years.

The same often happens in age group international football. I have seen our NZ U17 boys teams frequently play local federation or regional rep sides made up of senior players in preperation games before heading to WC age group competitions. I have watched a Federation 1 U20 mens team thump a U17 NZ side in a warm up game at North Harbour by 6-1.

Does that stop boys wanting to play football when an U17 National team is beaten by and older side?

I remember watching the NZ U17 womens team play a AFF u14 side a few years ago at North Harbour. The boys won 5-2 from memory.  The girls were 2-0 up at the first third break. Some of the girls I knew through my club at the time and they werent in any way despondent about losing to a bunch of 13 year old boys. They were smart enough to understand what was going on.

The things that grow the womens game are girls coming into the game, not male numbers in the crowds watching. The things that influence girls to join a football team are different to boys. They dont have as big an affinity with pro teams or star players, they join because its fun and social. A 7 year old girl really has no idea who Messi is apart from Dad or brothers mentioning his name and the Matildas losing to a boys team will have absolutely no influence on a girl deciding to play football over netball.

There are differences between male and females in terms of motivation. interest, satisfaction and fullfilment. Anyone with half a brain understands that.

These kinds of debates happen in other countries too.

There's the same kind of debate about it here this US forum:

Apparently the US women's team has often played regional schoolboy selections and lost as well.

That has done absolutely nothing to tarnish their image or public interest in them.

The US women's World Cup win last year was the most-watched football match in US history apparently.

Last year the US women's team earned the US federation something like 16 million dollars while the men's team lost it two million dollars.

That's interesting, thanks.

My comments were purely based on an average punter who tries to convert supporters to the sports he likes regularly and has had many an argument about "which sport is better" or "which tournament is better" or why it doesnt matter, and could concievably see why this would resinate with potential fans, and as the Football Ferns are awesome I'd love for their fanbase to be increased.

But as a new fan of the team, I'm happier to be wrong.
