If the Ferns can't get out a WC pool with a weaker Euro team like the Swiss, and the lowly ranked Philippines - they never will.

Moore will be hurting. Seems destined to never play at a WC. But she has been carrying a back injury last few months.

Moore is fuming big time, apparently she thought she was a shoe in.

probably best if she's not a standby player if she's carrying some baggage as you don't want to upset the camp too much.

The 3 standby players aren't the best but good on them for not throwing the toys out. Shows some maturity in these situations.

She has every right to be disappointed, like anyone in the 30+ women who have had a chance. She was never gonna be a guaranteed selection though. Surely she had to be aware of that.

you think she should have been guaranteed a spot? based on? None of the wider squad should have had any expectations of being in the squad! The spots had to be earned and for whatever reason Moore didnt do enough or wasn't what Klimkova wanted/needed in the final 23.

Yipe best Moore is not hanging around the squad at all it seems. Didn't enjoy the experience when injured in 2019. Best she's not around the group sulking.

Martin Boyle did his knee on the eve of last year's WC, but the Socceroos kept him on & he was appointed 'vibes manager' such was his positive energy despite what must have been gut wrenching missing the WC. And at 29, he may not be good enough for 2026. But you could see him on crutches alongside Arnold in the team huddles geeing up his team mates. Everyone is different.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/fifa-womens-world-cup-2023/132496145/fifa-womens-world-cup-meikayla-moore-turns-down-football-ferns-training-invite

Moore’s omission from the squad for this year’s World Cup came four years after she suffered an Achilles injury on the eve of the last World Cup in France.

The Ferns coach at the time, Tom Sermanni, invited her to stay with the team through that tournament in France and while she did so, she told Stuff earlier this year: “It was very difficult to do that”.

“I don’t think at the time I comprehended the enormity of how tough it would be. It was hard watching from the stands, and I was still in a lot of pain, so it was a very weird time.

“I was young, in the grand scheme of it all. I’m a few years wiser now and have been through a lot more,
so I probably would have made a different decision if I knew what I know now.”

Klimková said at the squad announcement last Friday that the 27-year-old had opted to learn of her World Cup fate via email and that they were yet to speak about the decision.

“I wish we could be talking and go through the process together, but since I sent the email, I can feel her disappointment, but I haven’t spoken to her yet.”

Something like this? (not picking Riley or Hassett as they have only recently arrived)

   Hand             Wilkinson            Jale
                           Chance
          Steinmetz              Percival
Foster      Bowen         Stott         Bott
                          Esson

Thats my prefered formation 4-2-1-3.
As would like to see Chance in the centre of the park.
Think Longo and Bunge will get extended minutes off the bench.
Later cameo's for Riley and Hassett.
Toss up between Cleverley and Stienmetz.

All major English women's football comps will be screened by TVNZ - looking forward to that because of all the Ferns in the Super League (Spurs, Villa, Leicester, Brighton) and FA Cup (Grace Neville at London City Lionesses etc.)
Stott and Leats' sides were in the semis of the Women's FA Cup this year.
77,000 at the final at Wembley.

Our group rivals:
Switzerland are in poor form having drawn five and lost two in their last seven matches:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switzerland_women%27s_national_football_team#Results_and_fixtures
(and only Denmark was a top team; couldn't beat Zambia, Morocco, Poland etc.)
Norway: recent results:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norway_women%27s_national_football_team#Results_and_fixtures
Also in poor form - in their last nine matches: W: 2 D: 3 L:4
Their only win against a top side was versus the Netherlands last October.
The other win was against Uruguay, not a strong team in women's football at all.
Philippines:
Have been playing a lot of games  - fifteen since the Ferns beat them in September last year:
Goals for: 37 (boosted by thrashing PNG and some weak Asian nations)
A narrow loss and a draw against Chile in Chile and the same results against Costa Rica in Costa Rica late last year were their most impressive results.
Their most recent matches were in May in the SE Asian Games in Vietnam.
Beat the Ferns' upcoming friendly opponents Vietnam 2-1 in their four team group, alongside beating Malaysia, with the one group loss vs. Myanmar - but were terribly unlucky not to progress, finishing on six points with hosts Vietnam and Myanmar but going out on goal difference.
Vietnam beat Myanmar in the final.

New Zealand v Vietnam
McLean Park
Monday, 10 July, 17:30
Vietnam it seems have another friendly scheduled v Spain on Friday 14 July (no details on the venue).
Vietnam lost narrowly to Germany 2-1 in a friendly in Germany recently:
Germany 2-1 Vietnam
Sparda Bank Hessen Stadion
Saturday, 24 June
Two weeks later (this morning NZT) Germany lost 3-2 at home to Zambia
So results can be unpredictable in these friendly fixtures.
Vietnam have played 14 matches since losing to France 7-0 in a friendly on July 1st last year:
W: 10 D: 0 L: 4
They don't draw games. It's all or nothing.
Of their four losses, two have been to the Phillipines.
Won gold this May at the SE Asian Games women's football, beating Myanmar 2-0 in the final.
Star player:
"Huỳnh Như
(born 28 November 1991) is a Vietnamese footballer who plays as a forward for Liga BPI's (top Portguese league) Vilaverdense (7 goals in 14 appearances).
In August 2022, she wrote history as the first Vietnamese female footballer to go play professional abroad in Europe, by signing for the Portuguese club Vilaverdense in the Portuguese Campeonato Nacional Feminino.
With currently 64 goals for the Vietnamese national team, she is the player with the most goals for the Vietnamese women's national football team and is the captain."

Time to get serious. Time for us to create some chances and show what we are capable of. That all the time spent together in the training camp has made a difference and we see a cohesive squad with good communication and massive determination to represent our country and show the NZ public the beautiful game and what those people who have never watched a women’s match are missing out on.

I know we have some goals in us and My picks would be:

                    Wilkinson.  Hand.
Chance.     Percival.     Hassett.      Jale.
A. Riley.      Stott.      Bowen.        Bott.
                         Esson.

We could finish the game up with a 4231 to catch them on the counter.

It should be a close game and I hope we rise to the challenge rather than letting the pressure get to us. Time to write some headlines Ferns!

It's definitely a big improvement over what we've seen in previous outings. Hopefully they keep it up!

The only thing I will say is that there's no way that goal goes in against a better team.

Oh and please for the love of God can we be rid of this shark commentary.

We can still get through with a draw with Switzerland and a win against Philippines can't we?  Just depends on other results.

It's far from impossible.  I'm just glad seeing us hit the back of the net in this friendly.  Hopefully gives the squad some confidence to take chances when they count.

Good to get a win but if we are honest there would be club sides in this country that would get past Vietnam! they were absolutely terrible...social footballers at the back.

We had a couple of good phases but i thought the passing overall was loose and sloppy especially in middle of the park. Steinmetz had a howler. Id probably start Longo over her now (if fit enough to get through at least 60)

Bit lightweight up top in the flanks (although did combine for second goal) and we can't keep playing Wilkinson its getting ridiculous now. What are our options there? Clegg? Can't go back to Rennie.

Bott best player by mile. Stott looks solid enough but wasnt really tested.

Team will take some confidence but gees it will be a different game next week...we need to get better! But we know our keeper is very good when tested so hopefully she has a top tournament!

Indicating that perhaps we have a closed doors games before the opener?
