FOOTBALL FERNS IMPRESS IN DEFEAT TO AUSTRALIAAmber Hearn in action against Australia last year (photosport.co.nz)
June 13, 2013
AUCKLAND – A goal four minutes before half time was enough for Australia to defeat a Football Ferns squad that deserved something from a fine performance. Despite dominating the first half with a possession-based game it was a mix up in defence that put Australia’s Michelle Heyman through on goal to score the only goal of the game....
....“We kept the ball really well early in the game,” said Coach Tony Readings. “We were passing the ball well, moving it from side to side. We created chances but just couldn’t score when we were on top. It was encouraging that we were creating chances but just needed that extra quality in the final third.”
“There were lots of positive aspects of the performance; Abbey Erceg performed well in her first game as captain and Amber Hearn caused them lots of problems."
The Football Ferns continued to knock on the door in the second half with Australian keeper Brianna Davey in outstanding form to keep New Zealand at bay and keep the score 1-0 to Australia at the final whistle....
....Looking ahead Readings is in positive mood as he builds the team towards the FIFA World Cup in 2015 and Olympic Games in Rio de Janerio. “It was a strong performance from the team and the positive thing is that we still haven’t reached our potential. This was probably our best performance against Australia. We need to keep doing what we’re doing and it will pay dividends. “

Looking forward to Sunday's second match against the Matildas (4pm live Sky Sport 4)
Hope they can keep the momentum going and build on last night's performance.
They'll have first-choice wing-back Ali Riley and midfielder Kirsty Yallop in the side for Sunday from their Swedish clubs (probably second best women's league in the world after Germany).
The team will be benefiting from so many playing in Germany - six of the squad play there. You can see that with Amber Hearn mentioned as a stand-out last night up front - had an impressive season in Germany for USV Jena.
Our first eleven mostly overseas-base pros or semi-pros now.
Erceg and Longo played the last national league season over the summer in Australia for Adelaide United and Sydney FC too.

Coverage on SkySports 4 right now.

Doesn't look like a "closed" match to me. Wasn't it supposed to be?

Big hopes for a result in the second half!!! Have to retain more possession in the midfield though...
Ahhhh!!!! Great chance for Wilkinson - goalie just got to the ball before her...

Who knew? The sides are playing for the "Canberra Centennial Cup" - the game is part of the city's centennial celebrations.
Will go to penalties if level at fulltime.
Let's spoil the party in the ACT!!!!
Ferns looking good in spreading the ball around and creating some good chances - we're definitely the better side - quite an achievemnt plaing away from home. Big advantage in possession to us...Wilkinson looking VERY sharp - big career ahead of that girl. Hope she gets to play in the German league soon, after finishing at college in the States...

Fark me! That was almost a rugby maul!

PENALTIES!!!
Can we claim it as a win if we win it on penalties? First win in 18 years if we win the shoot-out!!!

A lot of very good play by the Ferns, some areas to work on ie corners, transition and final ball.

Gutted for the Ferns. They played really well, shame they couldn't create enough chances to win it in the 90 minutes.
Abby Erceg player of the match - well deserved. Looks to have really progressed in her game. Spread the ball around out of defence very confidently.
Roll on v Japan on Thursday:

I have to say I enjoyed that game a hell of a lot more than the NZa v Jordan match.
Reminder that there is international football on sky sports tonight. 10:15pm kick off on sky sports 1 Football ferns v Japan.
To see how the Football Ferns have progressed within the space of 5 years or so is incredible. Their standard of play compared to what it used to be is really admirable. Absolutely dominated the game vs the Aussies, just lacking that conviction and decisiveness in the final third which can be worked on. Apart from that, Ernie and Ricki need to watch these girls and the style of football that they play. I think the Nix and AW players would benefit from this as well.
AW would also benefit from similiar amount the money being pumped into the ferns as well.
If the All Whites start showing the same form and competativeness against the top teams in the World and rank inside the top 20... then yeah, give them the same funding.
Until then the Ferns deserve it.
Has the game started... i can't get any streams to work despite having links there.
