N.B. US women beat the Aussies 4-0 last week, so we did way better.

just watched the goal (and a bit more of second half).
That was a superb goal. Excellent run from Stott, and perfectly weighted and timed pass. Wilkinson's first touch was a killer- gave herself time to look up while still moving at pace, and judge options correctly. and god, what a finish against a top class keeper.
watching the last 5minutes, the US desperately wanted to win, but Ferns kept their heads and played pretty confident and positive football too. Great skills and entertaining game.
Congratulations to the Football Ferns who were named "Women's Team of the Year" on Sky TV show "Feed the Backs" last night
- ahead of the Women's Rugby Sevens team etc.
Sarah Gregorius appeared on the show to accept the award and her strong but good-humoured personality came across very well on TV.
Host James McOnie of course is a football fan but I've been impressed with co-host NZ Olympic track and field athlete Sarah Cowley who actually revealed a knowledge of individual Football Ferns and their backgrounds the other week.

Thats quality! lol
You can ascertain what your opponent is afraid of by observing the means by which he attempts to frighten you
Five internationals already confirmed for the Football Ferns in 2014.
Four at the Cyprus Cup, including group games against Korea Republic, Eire and Switzerland - March 5, 7, 10 & 12 are match-days - followed by Japan in Osaka on May 8.
WWC qualifiers take place in Auckland between September 10 & 20 at this stage.
Cheers,
JR
And while they may not be recognised among the Halberg Awards contenders :-(, the Valais Women's Cup winners have climbed to an all-time-high 16th in the latest FIFA rankings. :-)

Hi Pete,
90 "A" internationals and 10 other appearances for Abby. She'll edge ahead of Hayley Bowden against North Korea tomorrow night in terms of "A" internationals, but the latter has made 15 other appearances, 105 in total.
Cheers,
JR

Ferns win the 11/12th playoff 1-0 again Finland. Goal in 42nd minute.
Not been a great year for the ladies so far. Have they let the hype of 2013 go to their heads or are some of the more senior players not playing as well as they have been?
Unless they start winning I think they will drop out of the top 20.
I did an in depth interview with Football Fern Helen Collins on the weekend. Here's the transcript for anyone who is interested:

Lots of possession turn over, game is a bit frantic. I like the style though. Wilkinson is fast but he touch has let her down a bit. Damn, 1-0
Fuck this stupid game
We can't keep turning over the ball in the middle of the park the way we are. Having said that, not doing to badly.

Great fight-back in the second half which you could argue the Football Ferns had the better of. Fantastic strike from Yallop.
An equivalent performance from the All Whites would have them level with the men's world champions away in Spain until the 87th minute and then finishing 2-1.
We were technically inferior to Japan's players but you'd expect that against the world champions. Kept our shape really well throughout the match and hugely promising to see the improvement in the second half.
It's something special when a NZ side looks just as likely to score as the world champs when only down 2-1 in the final period of a game....
Big Pete 65, Christchurch
Went to the game, was really dissapointed with the crowd but the rain was pretty bad in the second half. We played well and was pretty cool to see some f the girls that played in the u17 World Cup here had stepped up to the next level. They really are a nice lot if girls who are really friendly and go out if their way for fans
Calling all fans in Japan, come down and support the mighty nix in Osaka

I wish our ladies got as much attention as the rugby players or netballers. Here in the UK women's footie is starting to become quite visible in the media etc. Many Brits think I'm taking the piss when I tell them NZ takes women's rugby dead serious.
