So that’s about 10-11 games gteed for the Ferns this year. Maybe a similar amount next year with the Olympics to prepare for.

Still AWs fans have a game in Nov to look forward to.

What November is that?

good but scrappy win. Both teams could have scored more. Wasn't sure on the formation. But the defence was exposed a bit. Might need to stick someone in front of the centre backs to clean things up before they break through.

I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.

Katie Duncan's got it sorted, this is how you can have a baby AND keep playing at the top level

(Played with a lady a few years ago who took the field while she was still bandaged up from her Caesarean, now THAT's committment)

Haven't seen but I know their GK and he says technically Anna and Sarah are two of the best players in the squad, but need time to catch up to the physicality and speed of Prems.

Yep, physicality and speed were precisely what Sarah noted in the article on the front page

So I've bit my toungue until now... I don't understand how Hannah Wilkinson is in the squad?
How can you pick someone who has not played a full game?
I feel sorry for Emma Rolston - she would have been my pick. And if not Emma, one of the other up and comers.
For me it looks like too much power has been given to the senior players to influence and pick the squad.

If she is that important off the field name her as a welfare manager or whatever...

Tbf Google will give you the gist, but you need a human to get something that can be banged right up on a reputable website

I'm a professional French->English translator. I also do Farsi but Iran aren't at the WWC

My audition test was translating 2 minutes of an interview with Lucien Favre, would you believe

I don't care so much about who wins this game against the US. But if the Ferns can score a goal or 2 it will be a good result for me and a big step towards the WC.

Here is hoping no one picks up an injury today

You can't play international football on that. How you gonna grow the women's game if you make them play on that shark? Bad for the players and the spectators.

It's pretty weird that they've decided to play the game there. I mean, there's a number of football-specific stadiums from MLS teams around the mid-west, or if they wanted to go somewhere bigger, they could have gone to an NFL or college football stadium.

Instead they go to a city that only has a baseball stadium. Absolutely nuts.

When do football administrators ever do anything that makes sense?

For football ferns she has always been more suited to a centre back position...

I think so ... depends what formation. I would play 5-1-3-1 with the ferns ... you? (TBF I only watched 20min of the game today)

Haven’t seen any of the game so will wait before I comment. But I wonder if the Ferns are continuing to choose the wrong sort of player (IMO) ie they have have specific physical qualities. This may be somewhat by default- but who are the players that have the excellent technical ability?

I haven't seen the game either. But this result certainly highlights the enormous task the Ferns have ahead of them at this World Cup. Losing the the No.1 USA WNT is not unexpected, but I think that Canada and the Netherlands are also very good teams not far behind the US in quality.

We do have more good lead up games before the tournament so I really hope we can start to find the back of the net in those game to give us a bit of confidence up front. This next game against Mexico will be very interesting.

One day Nichole Mettam will get a look in.

We always seem to be a bit slow and not as athletic as other teams. I thought the first 35 minutes were quite good. I think many of their goals were more our poor positioning and defending than their brilliance.

Other results of interest.

Cameroon were beaten 4-0 by Spain. Cameroon being the team in our group the Ferns most likely to beat and record there first ever win at a WC.

Canada beat Mexico 3-0. We play Mexico in a behind closed doors friendly next. Canada also in our Group.

2-1 win over Mexico.

No details, but good to hear they are scoring some goals.

A win will certainly be moral boosting after the USA hiding.
