Wellington's Street Football team took the honours in Saturday's Street Football National Championships. The inaugural tournament saw teams representing Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin and the Capital compete as part of Wellington City Council's Festival of Football - a curtain-raiser for the All Whites World Cup Qualifier.
The teams were formally welcomed to the city and SportZone's purpose-built Queen's Wharf pitch by Mayor Kerry Prendergast and Te Atiawa kaumata Sam Jackson.
The most dramatic match of the day was between Christchurch and Dunedin - a 3-3 draw that ended in a sudden-death penalty shoot-out victory to Christchurch.
Team Street Football Wellington, who had been training hard all year for the event made their presence felt early on, winning all their matches in the round-robin format before unpicking the Auckland defence in a emphatic 10-0 final win.
Event organisers Street Football Aotearoa aim to take a New Zealand team to the 8th annual Homeless World Cup next year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; so this tournament doubled as a launch of their Road To Rio campaign; raising public awareness of the Street Football programmes around the country and beginning a fundraising campaign that they hope will provide the significant support required to get a national team to Rio.
The Brazilian flavour was enhanced by the presence of Brazilian Ambassador Renate Stille and performance groups Funky Junk and Grupo de Capoeira Resistencia as well as Wellington Phoenixs stars Daniel and Diego.
Former All-Black Norm Hewitt, a firm supporter of Street Football Aotearoa and its work with homeless and marginalised people, was on hand to offer behind the scenes words of wisdom to players who were competing in a public arena for the first time.
The tournament's Fair Play award was presented to Dunedin who captured the spirit of the event (and the imagination of the thousands who watched throughout the course of the day) by playing with determination and goodwill even when their team was behind. Player of the tournament was Fraser from Wellington who scored 14 goals on the day.

On the radio now with Willie Lose.
Willie: "What is this homeless world cup thing anyway?"
Frank: "Well, the accommodation is cheap"...
wtf?
Edit: This Frank has a role with NZF right?? He just said that basically nothing can be done about the Ireland vs. France debacle. That you just have to carry on. Would this have been the attitude of NZF had Bahrain pinched a goal in the same fashion to draw level on Saturday night?ahmad2009-11-21 15:38:49

its a good point ahmad. I know that Street Football Aotearoa, the agency which promotes and coordinates Street Football ('Homeless') programmes in NZL tolerate a certain amount of ignorance since prejudice can run deep and its better that people are talking about an issue than ignoring it.
However there has to be apoint where the ignorance stops, and since NZF are nominally supporters of the SFA, and since FIFA has identified the Homeless World Cup as an important grass roots programme then it should start now and it should start at the top.
You are quite right that we should be worried if this is the level of vision displayed by our top level, who are about to inherit a large wad of cash to invest in NZ football. Programmes like Street Soccer are important in the , not only for the social impact they have, but for the integration into NZ society of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers who would otherwise not have access to recreation. The very people who will some day be the future face of the 'All Whites'
I hope it was a flippant remark by Frank, but since FVH said at the One Shot For Glory press conferenc ethat Norm Hewitt was the coach of the NZL Homeless World Cup team, when in fact he is an ambassador i beleive that more educastion at that level is needed.
(Don't feel i have made my point very well, ill let it rest a bit til i have cooled down and look again-seems to me like an opportunity wasted to talk up some good work by NZF on national radio)

Yes the comment might have been flippant but it's a bloody disgrace IMO.
On the significance of the All Whites Qualification to South Africa, did he make any statements about how expensive the ramped up accommodation would be for our superstars in South Africa?
What the hell does the price of accommodation have to do with the question "what is the Homeless World Cup?".
I know that I used to wonder what "Homeless World Cup" was (as I didn't actually think for a moment there were homeless people in NZ - now I know I'm wrong), so perhaps Willie was asking about it as he (like me once before) didn't understand the concept?
So a really offensive comment by Frank IMO.
I thought it was one off until he displayed no sympathy whatsoever to Ireland for the Henry controversy - implying that in the same position NZ would not have protested to FIFA about a Bahrain handball leading to a goal (isn't that the job of a Football Assocation??).
And then he talked about their appeal to FIFA about Glen Moss's suspension!! Double standard much??
What is this guy on???ahmad2009-11-21 20:42:45
