Does anyone have any inside on whether the All Whites will be going on any international tours? Or even better will there be any international friendlies played in NZ? Been awhile since we've had any home games. santy2007-12-20 14:06:59

Good to get in a game against a South Africa, or even teams like Jamaica. Good to get one of those games under our belt on our the road to 2010.

Such games cost a lot of money, especially if played here, so I doubt there'd be a lot of them. I imagine we'd look to line up some Asian opposition before the playoff with the 5th Asian team though (assuming we get there, of course ).

Its going to be a hard task when(if) we quality for the asian 5th qualifier game. That team would be playing higher quality games than us so it would be a big step up for the AWs. Friendlys against better oposition are a must if we have any chance...

Agree with liverpoooooo, (sorry everton fan) if we don't get quality friendlies prior we will find it very hard. Asia is probaly the best route, will attract alot of fans especially in Auckland. Help cover the costs, if not make for a greater profit.

Totally agree.  To be honest I don't under why weve waisted our time playing Soouth American nations who have only humped us when we should infact be try to get games against teams such as Japan, China, South Korea, Iran etc, as these are the types of teams that we will come against.

After the home and aways WCQ against Vanuatu there is going to be a period of 10-11 months before our next WCQ against Fiji/New Caledonia.

I remember reading a while ago that there were going to be some friendlies organised in that period. I have not heard any news since though.

I suspect it would be against Asian nations and guess to be played away. Have to wait and see what Ricki is organising. I guess he has been a bit busy the last couple of months.

If we build it, they will come...

Search under Seatts. He mentioned something about looking at friendlies v Asian nations about a month back in the FIFA ratings thread.

I hate friendlies. nobody cares, nobody will play us, nobody will come back from europe (ie Killen and nelsen), nothing riding on it, worth buggar all ratings points.

granted, that was quite a negative post. and some people are fans of friendies. not me

just coming back once again to say NZFC, or youth development, or a centreback for the phoenix would all be more worthy investments for NZ football

Yet but its a good way for our team to play some qulaity opposition and if it doesn't get halted by our government its good for the game.

Surely to be playing games against the likes of a Japan or something is better than nothing. Say we need to loose money to make money in the long term.

Agree completely.  In fact Japan isn't a bad shout either: comparatively cheap and not too far away, plus it has direct flights to Europe.

I'd love to see an annual U20s+All Whites series against Australia.  U20s to play the curtain raiser.  We could both leave our European players out of it and people would still watch because it's Aus vs NZ.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

but its not even "our team" - bc we wont get key players back from europe. its usually a mish mash of whose available, a quasi development team. so, you're not actually building any cohesion amongst the squad who will actually end up playing the big qualifying games - if playing a one off game against indonesia b is going to give us that anyway.

the tours to europe - bc they do attract our european based players have some merit in terms of building cohesion and developing a pattern as to how we will play in big games, but even then they are massively expensive and so sporadic that its hard to build any real momentun. you've kinda got to start again every time - unless you play those games in the direct build up to a confed cup or world cup qualifying play-off (that's when we'll get some value from friendlies).

i suspect gates for friendlies at home are poor - for all the above reasons

Yeah a bledisloe/chappel hadlee comparison

as long as games are competitive the punters will come.

Geography does hinder NZ, but if we get into deals with teams that visit aussie...next thing you know we may have an Argentina on our shores.

I do understand that so many things have to work for this to happen.

I thought OFC paid for the U-17 and U-20 tours and warm-ups prior to the World Cups ?

As they would do for any nation that represents Oceania.

Well if you take the view, which I do, that because of where we are geographically we're never going to get good teams to come to us, then you have to decide how best to spend your money getting our teams to travel.

Three options:
1. Nobody travels (the Bill McGowan approach).
2. The All Whites travel (the Ricki Herbert approach).
3. The younger NZ teams travel (the Smithy246 approach).

I'd much rather see NZF tossing its limited money about sending our U17s and U20s to tournaments.

But then again with the cash we have to hand (none) it may be time for a return to the Billy Mac approach.

I semi agree mate but what happens when players are too old for those age groups.  They go nowhere and end up at Melville United or if they are lucky, Waikato.  Whereas playing the National team raises NZs playing profile, FIFA Rankings (key for players getting European work visas) and creates the potential for increased interest back home.  No one gives a t**s if NZ U20s play France but they would if that was AWs vs France.

True we cannot afford to play quality teams at home but we should play the Indonesias etc at home (we will lose money but there would be no need for Killens, Nelsens etc) but play the Japans, Belgiums, Koreas away as the income from those games would subside the losses at home.

Problem we have now is that we've pissed away all our money so if we do top Oceania that might bring us back to break-even...then how do we get some games before the play-off with the 5th best Asians?!!?!?!?!

The idea behind the recently round of activity was to boost corporate profile...and it hasn't worked.  Thai Airways haven't chipped in any cash, just sponsorship in kind.  It's time to re-assess how we spend our limited money.

Problem is our 5th place game is about a month after we play our last qualifier, assuming we win.

So any friendlies will have to be played before we have won the Oceana region. So there want be any money from there!

If we build it, they will come...

You would deffently get a game with Aus, But if its Aus u will play off against then a friendly would seem unlikely.

Playing some friendlys over in England might be possible.

On what are you basing the statement that there'd be income from playing away games against such teams? Such games would, in fact, cost us a lot of money - since we'd have to take our squad over there, which for NZ Football isn't cheap. The income from the games would be negligible - I doubt there'd be huge TV money on offer for a Korea-AW friendly, and I just can't see Japanese/Belgians/Koreans flocking to a friendly game against NZ either. The additional problem we have with friendlies is that they often end up being played outside FIFA window, so getting our best players to play in them is nigh on impossible. The reality is that we're in a Catch-22 situation - we need games against quality opposition to improve and get somewhere near the required international level, but getting such games is very expensive and almost prohibitive. There are no easy solutions here, but we'll have to figure out something soon, otherwise the Oceania Confederation is really gonna swallow us completely with its mediocrity.

The problem NZ is going to always have is we are too far away from everyone. Our best hope would be to get as many players in the European leagues as possible and then play our friendlies in European venues in the fifa windows.

I am sure it is easier to convince NZ/Aussie based players to travel to Europe for friendlies than it is to get european based players back here. It gives the Australaisian based players a chance to get some exposure to and promote themselves.

The Wales game was great. More like that in fifa windows would be great. When our best players are available.

Its not perfect situation, but I really think games should be planned around the likes of Killen and Nelsen. Ask them what games they would most likely be available for and interested in playing. Use them as the core and build our team around them.

If we build it, they will come...

Ive heard China and Vietnam were possible opponets, Now with the Asian WC Qlf shifted for a tighter schedule China would be unable to play.

Im sure the Olympic team will come first before the AW, So most of the funding should/would go to them in the 1st half of 2008.

I reckon the A-League Socceroos would be keen for a game against the All Whites. They need match practise there coach PIM quoted. They lost to the Olyroos. (Aust u23''s team) After A-League finishes bring it to the ring of fire in Wgtn!! Socceroos vs NZ!
