Like his Dad?

I now think there is a real possiblity that Rory Fallon wont be selected in the all whites WC squad.

If he doesnt make himself avaiable for the Mexican game, I think Coach Herbert will have no choice, but not to have him in the WC squad.

Its not about making himself available. If picked he will be going. Its all posturing. Someone can come along and post the pic of the hurricane in the drinking vessel if they like.

he can't not make himself available unless he retires from international football

There ias a really good chat with Ryan on yesterdays Radio SPort breakfast (replayed between 6 and 7pm) where he is asked about this.

Explains how careful they need to be with what they say to the English media.  Worth a listen

Yeah they are very club over country over there. Especially for foreigners id imagine. I can understand if it was just to keep them happy.

Allegedly

Fair enough, but as Ryan says in the interview in a world cup year the players just have to be available.  The "I'm just not a friendly kind of guy" wasn't the smartest call he's ever come up with

Probably got those foot in mouth skills from his agents.

Bit more on this

I'm not sure he understands the fans perspective.  We're all grown ups, we "get it", he's not the first person to be caught up in a club v country row.  The point is that this is not just an ordinary friendly, it is the beginning of our preparation for the World Cup.  No-ones made a big deal about Ryan and Killen missing games against the Islands or friendlies in the past due t club commitments.  But this isn't just a friendly, I basically consider this a competitive game and it's absolutely essential if we're going to be competitive at the WC, especially as we've had so little game time together.  We can't afford not to have the side together playing football.  I sympathise but he'll just have to make it work.

I don't think his Dad has anything to do with it, although let's be honest, Fallon snr isn't the most popular guy in NZ's "football family"

I think there's also a further point to be made here.  Some guys have made a lot of sacrfices and played in a lot of pretty $hit fixtures to even get the team in the position to play against Bahrain.  It's easy to say you're committed and play in the big games, but it's the unglamorous fixtures that are the hard ones.

Like I said, I understand his position, but I think he needs to realise how important all of these matches are and making statements like he's doing, some of which is quite patronising, isn't the best approach.  He'd be better pressed just to keep quiet and let his boss and Ricki talk it through

If he doesn't want to play for NZ then he doesn't play for NZ, simple. Although he should be kept in any reserve lists in case one of our strikers gets injured.

That's it, James.  That's where it will get sorted out, so why bother commenting?  The conversation between Mariner & Herbert will be an interesting one...  I can't really see Herbert giving much, as it's too important, but it's not a good idea to pick a fight with your players' managers - it comes back to bit you in the long run.

(When I say 'why bother commenting' I'm referring to Fallon of course, not you!)

I don't think its got anything to do with his old man. I think a lot of people criticising don't even have a clue about the politics of NZ Football, they just see a guy that doesn't seem to want to play in an important friendly leading into the world cup. I agree he would be much better off shutting his mouth and letting it be settled between Herbert and Mariner (and its a FIFA window, so theres no question of how it will be settled there.)

100% agree with this. Its the problem with having people "change" allegance. I get the same idea with Tommy. Theyre only here to go to the WC. They dont give a stuff (maybe a bit harsh) about NZ football, they are there for them

Fallon has been trying to change to NZ for 4 years or so, hardly like he changed last year for the World Cup.  He needed a FIFA rule change which is why it happened recently but he's been trying for years.

Let's turn the tables a little. Imagine Barbados had qualified for the WC for the first time ever, and they wanted Paul Ifill for their preparations - right when the Nix need wins to make the A-league playoffs for the first time ever. What would we be saying?

If it was a FIFA window I would be saying I don't want him to go, but international football is important, and there are very few times when it takes priority.

In the end it serves him right for deciding that he was english in the first place and ignoring the chance that he had in 2004. He's English when it suits then deciDes he is a nz'er when that suits what a tool; still he's good and we need so I won't say no to his ever changing nationality.

I think you'll find a big number of us kiwis living in the UK (with long term residency or British Passports) fall into the UK when I wanna be, kiwi when I wanna be. I know I definitely do.

I'm all pumped for the English 6 nations games for instance and lets be honest, if you had a chance to play for England, would you not take that over playing for NZ if your good enough (Winston Reid springs to mind here).  This is the same as all the Pacific Islanders who play for the ABs.
