Correct, but that isn't what these two games were about.

Three for me, and two for them.

Pretty hard to do a sales job on the public about these not being friendlies with this kind of comment from the players themselves isn't it?<!-- google_ad_section_end(name=story) -->
would you be happier if he said he was so upset he wanted to kill himself?

It was a friendly, and there was nothing riding on it.

Did anyone hear or comment on what Ricki said in the pre-match interview on Sky to Harry Ngata?

"I just want the boys to go out and enjoy [their "homecoming"] and not worry too much - no pressure".

I didn't want to comment on it because I wondered if it was the game face but man...

Tab Baldwin on the other hand goes into the World Champs with the Tall Blacks and no public expectation, yet when they get 3rd in the Tournament they are gutted because they had wanted to WIN the thing.

Hmmm attitude.

On another note - on page 1 someone said that Smeltz was allowed to make a 2nd attempt on the rebound "because the ball hit the keeper ". Are you not allowed to score off a woodwork rebound after a penalty shot??

I'm sure Ricki Herbert would be gutted if the All Whites got to the semi's and didn't win aswell.

On the other hand, if Tab Baldwin's Tall Blacks played a one off match against a similar opposition I'm sure he's not going to lose sleep because they only got a draw (ignoring the fact that basketball goes OT).

You've got to compare Apples with Apples.

No, I think my point stands. Tab always aimed high and was disappointed with the team's over-achievements because they wanted more.

I really hope it was Ricki's game face because anything I've heard him say in the media tended to suggest that he didn't really care about the results.

Earlier he said something about wanting to put a team on a close as possible to the World Cup teams because apparently NZers wanted to see the World Cup team on the field? This was of course instead of having the "best 11" per se.

Not criticising RIcki. Just saying.

No - the ball must touch another player before the penalty taker can play the ball again.

Wow I didn't know that. Does the same apply for a penalty shootout? ie. if ball deflects OFF GK can you make another attempt??

No - can only have 1 go in a shootout....

Has it always been the law that you can only take a rebounded shot after it touches another player? Or was it introduced in response to a particular tactic (like aiming for the post for a deflection)?

seems if you could aim for and hit the post it would be easier to just aim for the top corner or something

I guess I'm just trying to understand why it should need to be touched by another player before having a second stab - is it because otherwise you could flick the ball up and THEN have a shot after throwing the keeper?

yea more to stop things like that i would think. taking a touch first and placing the ball home once the goalie has dived early

Law applies for any re start of play (eg kick off, free kick, throw in, corner, goal kick)  - ball must be touched by another player before the original player can play the ball again. From memory has always been in the "modern" version (aka last 100 years) of the laws.

I guess it weas introuduced to circumvent situations such as touching the ball forward and then having a blast at goal...or throwing it to your self to guarantee possession...

From memory, Tab lost plenty of friendlies and shrugged them off as part of the buildup.
