He doesn't miss often, but you've got to admit, when he does - it's rather spectacular.

The miss from 2m was worse...even though the original kick went off the bar of course.

Kick should have been retaken, they had a player 2 metres inside the box.

Imagine what he would have felt like after the third miss.

10cm lower and it would've been the perfect penalty.

Dadi's was a piss poor penalty.

Did the keeper get a touch on the ball at all?

Yes, on the way down after he hit the bar.

Three for me, and two for them.

Oh well, I hope you all know that even if Smeltzy had put the ball in from 2 metres it wouldn't have counted.

That would be the only reason, ball hit the keeper so Smeltz could play at it

I don't speak for anyone on here, but the rubbish forummers, patronising attitudes towards NZ football and brain dead bloggers do it for me.

Three for me, and two for them.

It's actually pretty cool, I get a bit of stick for being a girl and a NZer but in my experience there are a lot of really awesome people on it. And not all of them are negative towards the All Whites and the Phoenix.

Smeltz says in answer to his miss:

" I'll get over it pretty quickly. I'm glad it's only a friendly and there was nothing riding on it."

Pretty hard to do a sales job on the public about these not being friendlies with this kind of comment from the players themselves isn't it?<!-- google_ad_section_end(name=story) -->

would you be happier if he said he was so upset he wanted to kill himself?

It was a friendly, and there was nothing riding on it.

yeah i agree we should just play all our friendlies half arsed and not care if we win or not, then we can sink back down to being ranked 80th in the world.

I was only quoting what Smeltz said - you saying he is wrong?

Bottom line, who gives a monkeys c**t if we are 40th in the world rankings or 70th?  Teams will play us if the federations can get money out of it, and apart from that it is meaningless.  The key thing is having the team play together and get better building towards the next world cup - results are not the be all and end all.

a higher ranking is important - I would have thought that during a friendly window we'd have abetter chance of getting quality opposition the higer ranked we are.....teams like honduras and paraguay aren't going to travel here if wea re ranked 80-100 or lower.....they may play us if we travel but that costs us heaps.

i give a huge monkeys c**t how we're ranked, and so does the nz public, and the rest of the world. what about future funding for the game? dropping to 80 SPARC will just tell us to f**k off again.

if theres ever going to be a case to lift the game in NZ and NZs footballing image abroad, being able to say 'hey we're ranked 30' (or however far we may get in the future) is going to be the key.

In my 38 years playing football there's one thing I can be sure about, a 'friendly' is exactly that until the kick off ,then its an all out effort to win at almost all costs, there team and ours!

there are bigger things to worry about than our ranking.  If that was the most important thing, then every game we played we would be determined to put our strongest 11 on the field - not a great way to prepare for the future.  We are going to be in a position where Elliottt, Nelsen and Vichilech (sp) are all going to retire in the next 3 or 4 years, so we have to be able to blood youngsters in so they are prepared when this happens.  That means experimenting a bit in these friendlies, which may cost us a few ranking positions for the greater good.

Yes but he shouldve been a bit annoyed at the fact he missed the chance to win us the game. Its nothing to do with blooding young talent when our 1st side was out there.
