KENT BLECHYNDEN/The Dominion Post
UNITED BY SPORT: Fabian Waenga, who is off to the Homeless World Cup in Brazil, shows his ball skills to All White Andy Barron. A $5000 donation from New Zealand Football has helped make the trip possible.

New Zealand's football World Cup heroes have saved the day for some of their most vulnerable compatriots.

The eight players in the New Zealand homeless football side have been announced, just two months before their world cup tournament in Brazil, after New Zealand Football made a crucial $5000 donation enabling them to go.

"Funding has been a huge issue," Street Football Aotearoa chairwoman Katie Owen said.

Just weeks ago the trip was in doubt after eight months' fundraising failed to achieve the money for flights. Seventy-five per cent of the $35,000 needed had now been raised. There had been good support from partner agencies, such as Downtown Community Ministry, but "there are only so many sausage sizzles you can do", Ms Owen said.

The 56-country championship will be the eighth cup but only the second the Kiwis have attended, after taking part in their first in Melbourne in 2008. Of the eight players selected to attend the four-a-side tournament, three are from the national champion Wellington side.

Fabian Waenga played his first football game less than two years ago, but will make his first overseas trip as a New Zealand representative. He was humble about his natural abilities that won his place in the team. "Apparently I'm quite loud."

Mr Waenga, who had a "long history" of homelessness but now lives in council housing, said playing football had made him more aware of humanity.

"I can see what [my team-mates] are experiencing and going through and a lot of crap they have to put up with."

He hoped to do the haka at the tournament, he said.

Kaha Keepa and Kevin Wagstaff round out the Wellington contingent.

Players have to be living on the street or in temporary accommodation, or have done so in the past two years, to be eligible for the team.

All White Andy Barron, who has just arrived home from South Africa, where New Zealand were the only unbeaten team in the World Cup, said the homeless championships were a "big deal". "[Football] can always be a great door-opener and I guess that's what these guys are looking for ... It is a stepping stone to bigger and brighter things."

His own World Cup experience was "the stuff you dream of".

New Zealand Football chief executive Michael Glading said the donation was in line with Fifa's aims of helping out, through the sport, those who are disadvantaged. "Football ... touches so many people on this planet. It's great to help out."

Well the article that you so kindly posted states that at least $5,000 came from my subs and that pisses me off. Last year we had our subs upped to cover the fiscal mismanagement of NZF and now they are throwing my money at this sort of rubbish. It's just a load of feel-good rubbish that has no benefit to the game of football in NZ.

It looks like you're involved in this rip-off of the minds and bank balance of the NZ soccer public and I don't appreciate it.

I also don't appreciate the historic poor financial management that puts my junior club members under financial strain and that doesn't mean anyone should condone what's happening here either.

Perhaps it has no benefit to the game of football in NZ but it almost certainly has benefit to some of the most unfortunate people in our society.

That's the Spirit we love and appreciate about football in NZ. Taking ownership of 'YOUR' game. The money came down the financial pathway not up. Your subs this year have already been spent a few years ago. If you'd  gone to the NZ Football roadshow you would know that.

As for the article, it didn't say where the money came from but this bit might help you (I've highlighted my point in case you miss it) -

" New Zealand Football chief executive Michael Glading said the donation was in line with Fifa's aims of helping out, through the sport, those who are disadvantaged. "Football ... touches so many people on this planet. It's great to help out."

Then let me decide where I want to spend my charity money, not have it taken out a set of fees that already are too expensive for what we get anyway.

You are crowding your argument with semantics, up/down - whatever- it is still our money.

All very well in following this FIFA Aim, but wouldn't it best serve EVERYONE if these poor unfortunates were channeled into a local club side [even if it meant having their subs paid]. Jeez, we have kids at our club whose parents make huge sacrifices to have their kids play - no easy rides to tournaments around the world for them.

Sportzone, how about you declaring your interest in all of this? EDIT: In that - do you receive any financial compensation or payment for your role in this?

I think it's a good use of $5000 of NZF's money, good look for the game, and they are representing New Zealand.

Of course I do and funded by the WC Council and the numerous agencies that can see the social benefits of the worlds greatest game being used for the benefit of all society.
If it was your money it would still be in your pocket and then you could decide what you spent it on. If you give it to NZF you expect to get football for your kids and you do. If FIFA give money to NZF they also expect to get what they want and they have so it was only your money when you had it.
I'm sure you don't complain to Rebel about the extra $200 for a pair of Nike boots that partially funds some professional footballer you can't be bothered with.

"but wouldn't it best serve EVERYONE if these poor unfortunates were channeled into a local club side"
Have you ever tried to join a senior football club as an individual? Do you know how much "other" football goes on in the country because it is too difficult to join a club when you are an immigrant or refugee, not English or a Kiwi? If the Street guys had the capacity to join a club they wouldn't be street guys and the Clubs aren't going to fund it as you have pointed out.
The great thing about street football is these guys are now all footie fans as they have been given the opportunity to participate. It's very inclusive!

Disgraceful comment. Can you just let these people have a good time while representing our country, without bashing them and making your own stupid judgements on their lives.

It is completely out of order to call all these people begging drunks.

I don't mean to belittle your efforts SZ, good on you for 1. making a living from football and 2. helping those less fortunate than ourselves.

Perhaps I wouldn't be so antsy if NZ football was/is in good financial shape and therefore had some discretionary funds to use for things like this. Not so long ago NZF came to us with their begging bowl to get them out of the sh*t and now they are giving away money. To me its like someone on the benefit buying cigarettes and booze instaed of spending the money on food for their kids.

As to those that think I'm being a tit; I'll say it again, let me choose where I spend my charity money - don't cry poor and then spend it for me.

It is this kind of largess that will get NZF offside with their membership, when other things don't go well.

You've missed my point completely. It's not your money! It's part of what FIFA have given to Oceania to give to NZF and have told/suggested NZF to do XYZ with it!
If you're counting all the FIFA money from football as yours then jump on the relationship with Unicef as well.
You may have also missed the title of the Topic - Homelessness - If you think that being homeless is being a pisshead or/and a druggie then you need to get out more. The whole point of the Homeless world cup is to firstly raise awareness of the situation in all countries that don't want to see or acknowledge it, especially New Zealand, and give those "homeless" people an opportunity to move on with their lives by playing football and immersing themselves into all the other things that go with football that you take for granted.

Street Football Aotearoa is a completely separate Football organisation to NZF. NZF just happen to be a minor sponsor in the whole matter. The $5000 helped get to Rio, It didn't pay for it. NZF  weren't there in 2008 when the team went to Melbourne and embarrased themselves completely when dodging the situation.

I haven't checked any of your other posts but did you complain about 'your' money spent on junkets by NZF Admin before, during and after the World Cup?

I think your problem is with NZF so why pick on the Homeless?

The largess of NZF only seems to have got you offside.

OK, lets get some things straight here:

1.     I am of the belief that it is my money. By my money I mean it belongs to the NZF paying membership and I dont care who it comes from or where it comes from if an organisation that I belong to and financially support spends any money  then I am entitled to have an opinion on how its spent. You obviously have a different view and you are welcome to that we just disagree. Are you a member of NZF?

2.     Dont presume what I think of homeless people, you dont know me and I while I dont know you either, I would not be surprised if my experience with homeless people far exceeds your own.  I also did not make any comments about being pissheads etc get off your high horse and check your facts thats 2 things you have not got your facts right on in a very short space of time.

3.     You are hiding behind your PC smokescreen and lecturing me about opportunities for homeless yadda yadda, that doesnt embarrass me or make me change my point of view.

1. You can have your opinion. But if you don't want it criticised then don't post it here. Yes I am.
2. Hard to prove and I have no horse.
3. I don't smoke and I'm not sure what you think I'm hiding from. It's opportunities for everyone that I support, not just those who can afford it.

I don't understand all this hype about $5k! I mean, come on, there's 1000 other ways NZF have squandered millions of dollars in the past (and maybe they still are?).
$5k is nothing to them (especially after the WC money) and is being spent for a good cause. If you want to have your say on EVERY expenditure you would need a full time job as an accountant I'd say!
The money has been given, so don't really get the point of complaining now.

I thinkt they're doing a great thing, personally. I work in a sector where money is short and we have to do a lot of fundraisers and get busy if we want to reach our goals. You have no idea what is like having a goal and not being able to reach it very few people/institutions contribute.

Well done tony on your involvement and may the Street Black kick some arse and have a good time!

Find it hard to see the concern about $5000 going here.

I mean we took a lot of players to South Africa that didnt play at all, and never were going to, how much did that cost. Bit of perspective please

Hope they can manage a win sometime, good luck

I do not want to stir the hornets nest anymore, but why the f**k is there a football world cup for homeless people?

Why is there not also a table tennis world cup for curly haired people?  A formula 1 grand prix for people who are overweight?  An archery world championships for alcoholics?

Obviously the overweight people would never get into the F1 cars, but you see my point.
