From Mr Rattue

NZHerald

" Each A-league week is driving another nail into the coffin that contains the boring, stagnant Ricki Herbert era, which can now be seen properly as a full-blown disaster that set New Zealand soccer back years "

That's a bit harsh from Rattue. I think its fair to say that Herbert was in the job longer than he should have been but had we not going to WC2010, what shape would the game be across many fronts?

Ricki also enjoyed success under the nix. Consecutive playoffs etc.

Brian's heart is in the right place and I admire his willingness to get involved with trying to promote the positive with Friends of Football.

However at the luncheon I found his tone rather disillusioned, resigned and worn out. For someone so close to the nerve centre I was surprised he didn't have stronger thoughts on possible solutions to problems, or what we might do differently.

And he surpisingly reluctant to expand and back up his opinions when challenged. Asked who was the best coach in NZ, he said Ricki Herbert. When asked why, in what way was Ricki the best, we never got beyond how he does a really good session on the park - even though he doesn't do that many sessions on the park...

On naming his starting XI All Whites at the moment he started reluctantly, came to a grinding halt at left back, and morphed into an unsolicited defence of Lochhead - and then Jeremy Christie.

But for all that, it was a worthy exercise and deserved a bigger audience. So good on Brian. And Josh Easby was exceptional as host.

I was surprised more of a sales pitch wasn't launched for the Friends of Football group... Brian was a bit off-hand about it - had someone hand out some leaflets and never got mentioned again.

Yes, I agree with all of that Bruce. He did come across quite burnt out... Also many contradictions, for example (at the risk of hijacking this thread even more than I already have...) on one hand Auckland City don't have their priorities right because they aren't developing players for international football, while on the other hand they are doing a fabulous job and we're all very naughty for being jealous of them... Lots of follow up questions I wish I had asked listening to it again today.

His response to a great game by the 'Nix- bag the crowd, absolutely slam Ricki, which a bunch of wankers will applaud, but actually it is a way to write off all the massive achievements by AWs and Phoenix and discount football...

BT does seem very burnt out. I think the grind of the last year really wore on him and then all the bullshit at Onehunga Sports too. I can certainly forgive him for being jaded and needing time out.  With respect to him as well, and I don't mean this with any malice but just as the game moved on from Adshead and Jones, the time of Herbert and Turner is done too. It showed when they put the team out that everyone wanted to see in the last game that this is the direction they should have gone and they did miss a beat. Was the same with the Phoenix as well that it was just time to move on.

I agree with his comment about Adshead and Jones why wouldnt you get them involved, you only have to sit down and talk to them and the knowledge of the game and ideas are second to non in NZ. Yeah jones won the national league by playing direct but he would be the first to say that the players he had werent good enough to play possession based game... Its a shame that they have been put out to pasture when we have the likes of Bazly taking national teams...

But the game has moved on from Jones and Adshead as hand on coaches today.

I agree that as a think tank, they should be well tapped into, but as active coaches in todays game? Seriously? Are you not seeing what Ramon and Emblen have tried to implement with their teams and play possession football and keep the ball on the deck? Thats the way they should be going not this long... er I mean direct football.

Really?  Surely the game has moved on from that generation?

Based on media related comment from many of them they are woefully out of touch with the current generation of football people/

I found some of Brian's comments pretty hypocritical - sadly due to some stories told in confidence I can't reveal details but in my opinion he is treading on shaky ground accusing NZF of spending money on silly things based on the things I have heard (not that NZF havn't spent money on silly things mind you).

Chopah I have to admit that considering him, Ricki, Fred and Frank are all mates, that it was most unusual (although refreshing in some respects) that he was prepared to give them an underhanded both barrels. It would not surprise me if NZF took some slight to the rocks he is throwing.

I doubt he would have said anything he hasn't already been saying to their faces... I also wonder if, reading between the lines, there is a power struggle going on inside the board between ex-players and those from a non-footballing background . Brian's comments  may either be designed to be helpful to Van Hattum, or at least the two of them are on the same page.

Good point Enzo. I don't doubt that for a moment with some of the odd stuff coming out.

yep fair enough - i just happen to know that some of things he is accusing NZF of - he has done as well.

One of the stories I can share about BT was at his son Daniels 21st, when he was doing his speech it turned comical pretty quickly - this was his opening line:

Daniel is special to me - because I was at his birth, I didn't manange to be at the birth of (insert older son's name, can't remember it) because I was at the 1982 World Cup with NZ.  The next 5-10 mins were all about the world cup and he finished off his speech saying how special daniel was to him.

To this day we can't figure out if he was serious or he thought it was a good joke - i think that's BT in a nutshell.  Good guy but can be pretty odd at times.
