Not so surprising given what has transpired in the last month.

A new poll shows interest in soccer soaring, with more New Zealanders interested in the All Whites performance at the World Cup than the All Blacks performance in either the Ireland / Wales tests or in the upcoming Tri-nations.

Not sure how interesting it is but 79% of New Zealanders call the sport soccer with only 19% calling it football.

Good. Long may it continue.

Three for me, and two for them.

I think a lot of it has to do with media exposure and results. The popularity will only continue if the All Whites get consistant and good games post-World Cup. Hopefully the Nix will get more coverage too.

interest in the All Blacks has decreased dramaticly over the last ten years anyway. There are other NZ sports that get loads of media attention these days and IMO rugby is only considered to be our main sport simply because of the long standing hype around it and the fact the people involved try not to reveal too many statistics regards how much smaller game attendance, tv viewing and actual playing numbers are

In a years time with the Rugby WC here and probably no games for our All Whites interest will start to fall off. It is a shame. Hopefully it doesnt fall off too much.

Looking for other results on UMR's facebook site, found these:

Interest in Rugby was 60% compared to 37% for football in August last year.

But then after the All Whites win over Bahrain interest jumps to 60% for football, but rugby is also up to 70% with All Black tests overseas on at the same time. Interestingly more people were interested in football after the Bahrain game than there are currently now, 53% in this latest poll.

Yeah...it's going to be completely different next year unfortunately.

It's a bit silly comparing Tri-Nations games to a once every 4 years tournament like the WC as well, but eh. It's nice that people are jumping on the bandwagon anyway.

a really 'bad' "pretend world (= a few countries ) cup" could also help in the long run

all blacks out early, marketing and/or admin f**k-ups, player and coaching staff arrogance - take your pick

yes, i know to some i might sound cynical/bitter/twisted but if it helps football i'm in favour

hell, i even noted my support for madame Prendergast on the basis of her All Whites parade ideatigers2010-06-23 21:25:52

Well considering ireland and wales are sh*t, and havnt beaten us in decades, its not surprising. More excitement in the footy, especially at the TAB.

This maybe a little off topic.

I find this whole battle between rugby and footy pathetic really.

This is coming from some one who hasn't watch rugby in ages. Can we not just enjoy football without having to compare it too rugby ?

And rugby is just as bad. Too much insecurities i think!
