Roll the clock back 15 years in a pub in London just before year end close off, someone yelled Excel and the other half of the pub yelled Lotus, this chanting & rivalry went on for a while and stopped when a woman in the corner yelled Quattro Plus and a lone man yelled SuperCalc.

Rankings prove nothing. Oz are up to 38 and Kenya has the biggest jump or if you like increased rating?

My last comment touches on the age old question.  Is there anything better than Excel?
Since Excel 2007 came out, I no longer have all the same key strokes and 17 years of learning have evaporated.  I still have a copy of Lotus and an open souces 'virtual' excel spreadsheet with the same key strokes, which opens and saves as Excel 2007.
What other spreadsheet software is out there that you are still using?

StarOffice Calc from Sun. I got if from the Google Pack for free. There's also the Google Docs stuff.

That's the price of a loss and not playing enough matches. But it all comes down to money as you FA can't afford to schedule friendlies.

I remember reading some articles with your officials beaming with pride when you were 54th or something and saying it will be easier to schedule friendlies now. Eh...

Rankings goes up and down, but if we are in the World Cup Finals then who cares?!

You got lose a few to gain more. However, Fiji didn't placed some of their top players and was a slightly younger side than the previous encounter.

I like to think that the NZFC is the top domestic competition in the OFC but I am not that confidence that it is. If all the OFC nations used their domestic league players including those players playing in other Oceania countries, I would have to be very uncomfortable with the results. I really believe that our NZFC players will have a torrid time being even half a step away. NZ really only got by on our oversea players (+Nixs) and somehow that disturbs me that the NZFC is not able to lift the player standards high enough to overwhelm the other OFC teams even though their players have improved as well.

I don't particularly think that it's the All Whites coach fault, but maybe our NZFC coaches are not able in a semi-professional environment to train the players to a suitably high enough technical level. Talking to a coach at that level, three training sessions and a weekend game is enough. I know that they have really work the players hard in those sessions, but I am not convinced, personally that three session is enough.

I have heard on semi-professional players in europe practicing every night except for match day and one rest night and that they were able to do well technically and at a very high level.

It becomes a time and commitment issue. However, the O-league teams must do heaps of extra training and perhaps does the 4-5 sessions a week plus match. I would be interested to know how much sessions per week that each NZFC franchises do. I wouldn't be surprise if Auckland City and Waitakere United does 4-5 sessions. It's not as much as a way of life as it is in other countries. 3 sessions of 1 ball skill, 1 endurance and 1 tactical is less than some schools. So I'm thinking that we don't work out how much we can maximise semi-professional playing level and time. We have amateur sportsperson in other sports around the country that spend more training sessions and they don't run out of puff. It becomes a habit and a way of life. I really don't think we understand our time commitment to the sport in NZFC.AllWhitebelievr2008-12-22 03:57:12

All Whites slipped 4 places on the latest Fifa rankings. That doesn't include last nights loss to Tanzania.

I ran some calculations, if we beat Botswana but lose the rest of our games in June, we will drop to ranking of 100th. Probably a fair place for us.

If we lose to Botswana as well, we will drop to about 110th.

If we build it, they will come...

You're right. I just had a quick look at the latest rankings table, and pretty much all the teams between us and 100 are better than us (maybe not Cuba and Canada). Think we belong somewhere on the other side of the 100 tbh.

Well having a quick look at the June month over the last 4 years, there wasn't much difference to be alarmed about. Friendly matches are quite insignificant points and acts more of a stable factor if any. The points up for grabs in WCQ and Confederation finals against higher ranked opponents that we are going to be in are much more significant and easily 3 to 4 times more what the friendlies can contribute.

We will drop that 0-1 lost match to Australia in England in 2005 and that Brazil 0-4 lost 2006 game wasn't much impact damage to us either.

Hardly much shift in the ranking points for a real long time. The 2007 WC qualifiers matches may have lose a bit of points come October/November. But if we win the WCQ playoffs, we should actually rise up.

If we lose all the Confederation Cup games by that time, it wouldn't make much changes because we are lowly ranked nation playing against very highly ranked nations. That's how the FIFA point system goes, it does not punish the losers but give rewards points to the winners.

The confederation finals and WCQ play offs are the only real important matches for us for our rankings.

I expect that we would be about 86th (assuming we lose all confed games) going into the World Cup play offs against the Asian 5th team.

If we win any of the Confed games we would jump into the mid 70s to late 60s rankings.

If we win one of the WCQ playoff legs, its late 60s, both WCQ playoffs, it's mid 60s.

And I am quite conservative here.

If we lose all, we stay late 80s.

So not really much drop if things goes bad but rather more of losing a chance to gain ranking points for higher placings. Thats what we are looking at.

TBH I still hate FIFA point system which bias in many ways and prefer the logical Elo rating system which has us being 73th placed with all things considered as of 13th May 2009.AllWhitebelievr2009-06-04 23:51:27
