This is just for the Maori Football followers.

The Maori Football NZ invitation team to play against a touring football (soccer) squad from Canada was named last week, Wednesday, 13th July 2011 on
Maori television.
The team is an invitational squad to represent Maori Football NZ during their 3rd anniversary celebrations. The Canadian tour has been dubbed The Friendship Tour - New Horizons, New Friends the South Pacific tour will take in 2 matches in the Pacific and 2 matches in NZ and will culminate in a match for a trophy donated by Leo Bertos to commemorate the event against KAHUKURA 17.
With All Whites star Leo Bertos gifting a trophy as the Maori Football NZ Ambassador for the match adds even more excitement, we have even more to play for than just pride of a people but also a national tourism culture claims Parker & Nicholson, Head Coaches.
Ross Nicholson, former All Whites Goalkeeper between 1999 2006 admits NZ is a very proud nation in everything we do and now Maori Football has a presence we will give every opportunity for these players and others to succeed come the end of their experience with Maori Football NZ. Its about the badge and the mana of who we are.

All gags aside wtf is this "Maori" team and who has picked it?  Sounds like a bit of a sham.

I'll be naming my Whitey Whites XI next Friday.

yeah, I reckon it looks to be a great initiative, and a really positive move to get higher recognition and involvement of young Maori players in the game. Was pleased to see the squad included a couple of southern players too.

Hope to see more of this and hope it is a success. I think it can only be good for the game, providing another opportunity for good players to get experience and exposure, and something to aspire to- hopefully keeping them in the game long term.

Its a shame Winston Reid, Rory Fallon, Leo Bertos and Jezza Christie didn't make the cut. Maybe Harry Ngata could bring out his faithful Puma Kings for a game.

Its no longer a problem.

Agree smithy, it has to be a good idea imo.

Any initiative that encourages different cultural groups to play and stay with football has real potential to be good for the game.

Be great to see this idea take of for other groups - sort of 'culture kicks' at a national level.

NZ's changing demographic could be great for football.

cool! hopefully the start of a growing long term trend, and hopefully at grass-roots playing level and in fan distribution too (might take a few generations but football is here to stay!)

more Pasifika players shifting to football would also be good

Does it really matter what ethnic group are in the AW's? Does England care how many blacks are in the England side? The whole thing is just a load of crap.Teams should be picked on merit not race.

if it gets more people playing and following the game, then as far as I'm concerned teams can be comprised solely of VW owners or people have ocelots as pets

I agree about more people playing the game, but just imagine what would happen if we wanted to pick a pakeha only side. Riots in the street.

Leggster I usually default to that sort of view too, but in this case I think there's a fair distinction in that Maori are under-represented in the game here.

I think it's good for the game overall if we encourage participation of any under-represented group.

In general though, I am not a fan of any team picked along ethnic lines.

If the naturally talented and athletic Maori and PI kids can see a future in football it will only help.
My boys are 1/4 Samoan, 1/4 Kiwi and 1/2 English so I expect them to be both All Whites and All Blacks. In the same weekend. Possibly Tall Blacks in the summer as well.

Its no longer a problem.

I considered getting a VW and an ocelot myself, however I personally prefer Jaguars.

I've had a look at the website; does this crowd have any official support from NZF or is it a private set up? It doesn't matter too much in terms of if its a good idea or not, but I'm thinking about traction. You see quite a few Maori and Island kids playing in the youth grades over here in HB. Many you wouldn't pick until you see them with their family.
