Start Gleeson

MLS don't seem to stop for the FIFA window.  Gleeson's got a game on the 4th of June (5th here) so he may not be released if the other keepers are still out and even so he doesn't want to lose his place in the pecking order for a friendly.   In fact Chivas and Vancouver all have games that day so I'd say count them out.   The Galaxy have a game on the 3rd.

Keep Moss in goal.  Give Pasty a rest.

Then he wouldn't be able to play in the MLS that day either. His call.

Are Bertos and Paston available?

All of the A-League guys are going to be so out of season it's ridiculous. In fact, so out of season won't preseason have started?

Maybe his injury is deep vein thrombosis prohibiting prolonged overseas flights

I would say he should be. Last I heard from him it was just a matter of him resting. He is finishing up a 3 week holiday now so unless he has done somthing stupid on holiday then I would assume he would be.

From FIFA regulations regarding injuries during international windows:

A player who due to injury or illness is unable to comply with a call-up from the
association that he is eligible to represent on the basis of his nationality shall, if
the association so requires, agree to undergo a medical examination by a doctor
of that associations choice. If the player so wishes, such medical examination
shall take place on the territory of the association at which he is registered.

And some more from the same regulations:

A player who has been called up by his association for one of its representative
teams is, unless otherwise agreed by the relevant association, not entitled to
play for the club with which he is registered during the period for which he has
been released or should have been released pursuant to the provisions of this
annexe. This restriction on playing for the club shall, moreover, be prolonged
by fi ve days in the event that the player, for whatsoever reason, did not wish to
or was unable to comply with the call-up.

As opposed to the very defensive formation 3-5-2, i.e one less defender and one more midfielder by definition.

I could understand if you threw up a 4-3-3 and said that.

Or is it a 4-3-3? Hard to tell with the formatting! Looks like a 4-4-2 diamond to me. But then on second glance you have Leo and Kosta out on the right wing, smeltz on the left, Brown alone in the middle, then WeeMac playing behind Wood up front. Yikes!

For the Australian game, yes.

For Mexico, no, because it's outside the window.

So you get called up you HAVE to play, even if you don't want to.

There are so many 'what if's' I want to ask...I don't know where to begin.

You can make yourself unavailable and have your national association acknowledge and accept it, thereby not calling you up anymore - most commonly seen in international retirements.

Permalink Permalink
almost 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
But theoretically the national association can decline it, and continously call you up? Or just call you up even though youve expressed that you don't wish to play?

I'm guessing it doesn't apply if you've never had a cap for that country either.

Well, I guess so - particularly considering this, from the same regulations as well: "As a general rule, every player registered with a club is obliged to respond
affirmatively when called up by the association he is eligible to represent on the
basis of his nationality to play for one of its representative teams.".

But at some point common sense would have to come in - if someone really doesn't want to play, they don't want to play. The worst case scenario in such a situation for the player is he misses a game or two for his club, and the national association look like arseholes.el grapadura2011-04-20 23:42:51

I imagine at a certain point there would be some appeal process to stop any potential thing like that happening too. Not that I imagine it ever would, but you never know, an association could hold a massive grudge against a player and do that to him. You never know.

I was more thinking along the lines of Gleeson in that last sentence. (He hasn't got a NZ cap right?). Theoretically, if he were eligible for 2 countries, and NZ called him up, but he didn't want to play (be it whether he just broke into the portland side and doesn't want to leave now, or he has his sights set on playing for another country), then does the rule still apply?

I'm thinking way too much about this because the alternative is a communications assignment by the way. That may be why I'm finding this so interesting.

Well, saying he wants to concentrate on his club football if called up during an international window is not a valid excuse according to FIFA, so he and the club would get lumped with the penalty outlines earlier.

If he's eligible for two different national sides, I would expect him to communicate his unavailability to the national association in question so they don't call him up, and I think (but don't know) that FIFA would be more sympathetic to the player in the case he was called up.

Nothing, I would just like to see if Gleeson can perform at the same level that he is for Portland at international level.

Three for me, and two for them.

I had a theory that Rickie would start lots of the MLS guys against Mexico...Elliot, Boxall, Gleeson etc and rotate the squad for the Oz game because there is no way that you can play a game at altitude and then fly accross the world and play a key game against Oz in 4 days and perform at a top level .But if the MLS does not shut down as some suggested then the squad depth will be really tested.

A good showing against Mexico would be OK but it is the Oz game we want to really want to do well. They will be fielding a very good team and are at home. We need to give them a realy good game because if we do then there is a good chance that a trans Tasman game could become a regular event. So Rickie will have to juggle his squad so the best team in the best condition possible is fielded against Australia.

I can't see how the Nix AW's can make much of a contribution.....by June most of them will not have had a serious game since Feb.

Killen also put the free header just before halftime straight at the keeper, whereas either side of the keeper would have been a certain goal.
