Michael McGlinchey tips New Zealand to qualify for World Cup<!-- author --> <!--dt><img src="/images/author.jpg" border="0" alt="Greg%20Buckle" /></dt--> By John Taylor

Central Coast Mariners recruit Michael McGlinchey is tipping New Zealand to join the Socceroos at next year's World Cup in a footballing first.

"The boys honestly believe they can make it and are up for it against Bahrain," the Mariners midfielder said.

McGlinchey made his debut for New Zealand in a friendly against Jordan last week and is hopeful he did enough in 45 minutes to convince coach Ricki Herbert to stick with him for the two crucial qualifiers on October 10 and November 14.

"Ricki told me to enjoy myself and I thought I did OK. It will be a bonus if I play against Bahrain but I'll be just as happy to be in the squad for experience," McGlinchey said.

"We had a very good win over Jordan (3-1) and we didn't have one of our other good strikers Chris Killen. Put him there with Shane Smeltz and it's a pretty deadly strike force."

Smeltz scored a double against Jordan and is the leading scorer in the A-League with nine goals.

New Zealand haven't been to a World Cup since 1982 but became the Oceania heavyweights when Australia switched to the Asian Football Confederation.

Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna will welcome back McGlinchey for Saturday's clash with A-League leaders Gold Coast United in Gosford and also expects defender Chris Doig to return to bolster the defence.

"We haven't been scoring a lot of goals but we still have the best defensive record," McKinna said.

so true. We have the best side we have had for many years and so strong up front. Any of the four could be good enough. We have a great shot(at glory)

I think for the WCQ it will be best to play one of our 4 strikers in the midfield. Too much talent gone to waste other wise. I definatly think we should for the home leg.

Which one of our forwards could realistically play mid field, aside from Smeltz are any of the other 3 mobile enough?

Wood can play as a link man behind the two main strikers. But It could be risky, with that many players forward. Maybe if we are down and have nothing to lose we could play 3 strikers at once.

Play McGlinchey who is a genuine No 10 behind your strikers..

We are strong upfront and have options in terms of finishers.

But it is all for nothing if we don't have McGlinchey and Elliot to pull their A game in the midfield. We need to give good ball service in order to get goals.

This is our key to success is our midfield. Elliot as our holding midfielder, McGlinchey as our no.10 playmaker, Bertos as our wide attacking midfieider (name your wing), Brown as our box-to-box midfielder.

The backline looks to be similar to the Jordan match, I think.

either
Scottie - Nelsie - Siggie - Lochie
or
Siggie - Nelsie - Viceie - Lochie

take your pick.

And the combinations upfront are a real headache.

If Elliott and McGlinchey are in the middle, and Bertos out wide on one flank where are you going to play brown, on the right?

Or are you after two dm and one am with Bertos free to roam??

Elliott could push out left where he has played before.

Huh?

Just have Elliot and Brown more control in the centre, they are slightly more defensive in nature, Brown a bit forward on the right and Elliot bit back on the left as before.

McGlinchey and Bertos can have whatever side they like to roam. McGlinchey prefers the left and Bertos prefers the right but both can go on any side when they attack.

Its more on the what roles they do with slight preference to the area they work the best in. It is a really skew diamond shape in the midfield and i think is just right for us because of the roles these players have and the areas that they naturally prefer roam in.

They should be able to integrate Smeltz in their attack and allow Lochhead from the left back and either Siggy/Scott on the right back to bring the ball down the sides and even crossing.

The skew diamond shape will allow the backs forward as well giving the passing angles with the midfield for better control. With Nelson and Vicelich/Siggy in the centre able to pass the ball to Elliot or McGlinchey or Brown. While the right or left back linking with Bertos or MGlinchey with Brown and Elliot as an supported passing option. I can see the links in attack as being positive.

Bahrain has to have some attack down the sides and no doubt that would try to attack the weaker right back of ours because of the evidences at the confederation cup exposed by the higher opposition and the lack of an NZ player in the Phoenix in that position. I think that there is a speedy player that they would used so the first 15-20 minutes, the defence would have to be on their guard especially whoever is playing RB. I would have Brown drop back to shorten the area that the RB has to cover so he can focus on the speedy player. Brown would have shut down the Bahrain midfielder Mahmood Abdulrahman (aka Ringo) because of his long range shooting. Paston has to watch out for his free kicks and long range shooting.

We should shut down Jaycee John with our defence.

KSA has proven that they can be dribbled past but their sheer numbers in bahrain defence shut them out. So strew passing first before doing the dribbling magic maybe need to open up gaps.

We really need to shut their midfield down before it gets going to get full control. Go really hard out for the 50/50 balls and then maintain possession in the midfield we are taller and stronger so this is our strength is to get to the 50/50 balls first and body check them off the ball. That is what KSA failed to do as I understand. We have the players, I believe.

Lol. Our midfield average is roughly the same as theirs with us having less than an inch better than them.

But no, I generally meant to refer to the whole team/squad.

In both forward and defence departments, we average 4 inches above their average. In my book that is a huge aerial advantage and crucial in getting the 50/50 balls.

BTW another midfielder we have to shut down is Abdulla Baba Fatadi as he scores plenty himself.AllWhitebelievr2009-10-04 23:57:18

Team to play Bahrain should be:

                              Paston

Scott/Mulligan    Sigmund   Nelson    Lochead

                   Brown              Elliott

Bertos                    Smeltz                  McGlichey

                                Fallon

Unfortunately Paston in goal I presume as Moss suspended? He is a liability ever since his Napier City Rovers days, I think he has never caught a ball in his life - always parrying or punching i.e so he doesn't get blamed if he fumbles. Anyway - hopefully they don't find out how aweful he is.

I prefer Mulligan to Scott although they both haven't played competitive football for a while (ok he he didn't know whwther to go for a sh*t or a piss against spain but would scott have done better...- he doesn't even stand out in the northern premier league for melville). Other option as people say Sigmund to right back and Vicelich in at Centre back (I prefer Boyens actually as a better athlete and in the air but unfortunately was left out to dry by Vicelich in the confed cup warm up matches). Although people say Vicelich has experience blah blah if you watch the warm-up matches to Conf cup and the conf cup closely and know your stuff - he exposed the defence dreadfully at times and is slower than a wet week these days.

Playing away from home always going to be 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1 whatever you wanna call it, although Bertos, McGlichey, Smeltz and Fallon isn't exactly parking the bus and hitting on the counter. So almost a liverpool type formation with Brown (although still technically rubbish but the best we have) playing the mascherano type role and trying to cover the back 4 (especially double cover for the right back). Elliot can play the pockets and hit our target men early.

Killen or Fallon - has to be Fallon - Fallon better on the ground, left footed which adds a little extra and perhaps slightly better mobility. In the air - pretty even.

Hopefully for once we don't conceed in the first 15- 20 mins and try and take the crowd out of the occasion and get them frustrated.

Prediction 2-1 loss first leg and win 1-0 second leg. South Africa here we come.

What is this obsession with playing Aaron Scott? He isn't good enough and won't be up to it against Bahrain.

Three for me, and two for them.

I'd hosently say Old, who is playing week-in, week-out in the SPL, over Scott who is playing NZFC and Mulligan who can't even make the Nix bench.

Its no longer a problem.

It will be interesting if he is given another look in. He has been playing out right.

Don't really see him offering any positive attacking runs or link ups with our right mid though. He would be another danger on the set pieces however.
