I know one person this won't be - Allan Jones.

Allan has just signed a two year contract with a club side in Oman and leaves in 2 weeks time.

Having spent roughly 12 years of the last 25 years coaching in the middle east. He would have been an ideal foil for Ricki on this assignment.

He also speaks Arabic which I imagine would have been an advantage and knows local protocols etc.

Whether there is anyone else locally that can assist I'm not aware. Any suggestions??

Another question. One would expect Ricki to go to both legs of the Asian playoffs in Sept. Will this be acceptable to The Phoenix?

Isn't this an admission that Ricki's just not up to it?

Would appear that way, I assumed from the release that Ricki had not even been consulted?

Allan Jones may be one of the most qualified coaches in NZ but I don't rate him. What has he done at National level? Has never played at any level, and is one of many Poms that came to NZ and did nothing to improve the standard.
He is a coaches coch, not a players coach.

John Adshead has national director of coaching in Oman 2000-2005 and according to the YF news(stuff) he recommends that NZ plays Oman, UAE and Qatar which are more similar in playing style to Bahrain and Saudi and not Iraq and Jordan that the NZF are trying to get friendlies from.

John Adshead on Dominion post wrote:
"You can't even begin to imagine that it's going to be a comfortable ride, because it won't be,"

"The likes of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are going to leave no stone unturned. They'll do the right preparation and will give the players, should they be successful, rewards that we could never match."

"On the rollercoaster that is international football, Middle East teams tend to have very high highs followed quickly by very low lows,"

"Patience with coaches runs thin very quickly. In Oman, I coached the under-20s and under-17s consistently for five years and, in the same period of time, we had six national team coaches."

[ Bahrain's coach, Milan Micala, has been in charge for two years after previously coaching Oman.]

"It depends whether you get them up on a high, or down on a low."

"the start of winter".

"They won't get 50-degree heat, but it's still going to be very, very hot. It's a dry, very tiring heat and, although the players might want to be active during the day, they can't be; they have to rest. Even training sessions will take a hell of a lot out of them."

He said the All Whites should go to the Middle East "reasonably early, if possible".

They would do well to base themselves in Oman's capital, Muscat. New Zealand Football hopes to arrange warmup games against Jordan and Iraq in September.

He said Herbert had to "forget about the Confederations Cup tournament now" and look at tomorrow's last game against Iraq in Johannesburg as "a big learning curve".

"Iraq produce some big, strong lads that can play this game," he said.

"They fight wars these boys, and we're not talking about wars on the football field. They are very disciplined.

"They will get a good gauge of where they're at [for the World Cup qualifiers]."

BTW it would be nice for the team to base themselves at the Jebel Ali Centre of Excellence in Dubai, it has everything . . .

. . . . For more details and information, please contact:

He won 3 NZFC titles back to back and the Oceania Champions League - not bad really.

Leggy,

I don't have to be Allan's Cheerleader as his record speaks for its self. At the end of the day he has been a full time professional coach for in excess of 30 years across four continents. He has just picked up another two year contract in the Middle East.

But in response to your question of what has he done at National Level you might recall back in the mid 80's he was All White coach when we beat Australia home and away and achieved a similar feat against Japan. You can throw in a victory over Ghana if you want.

If we able to achieve those results today we would be ranked around 30 in the world.

I admire the high standards you set.

There maybe some things in what you say. Allan Jones cares about New Zealand Football as much as I care about American Ice Hockey. He is only interested abour money.
Riki is the first NZ coach and as I am a big critic, at this time I am prepared to give him the bennifit of the doubt.

It really does annoy me when people throw around the "He is only interested in money" line to describe anyone. Be it players or coaches or administrators. I am pretty certain that on a per hour basis anyone receiving any form of remuneration  at club level in the game would be financially better of flipping burgers at a fast food chain.

For the number of times I have seen Allan provide support and assistance to a whole host of people in the game it is pretty disparaging to throw that label at him.

Just as a sample of his voluntary input in recent times

1. Taking training sessions for at Glenfield last season a +50km round trip from his home last season.
2. Travelling out of town to assess opposition for Chris Milicich at Waitakere United two seasons back. This was an all day affair travelling to the likes of Hawkes Bay and Manawatu.
3. A number of coaches  use Allan almost in a mentor fashion calling and seeking advice / direction. This includes past NZFC coaches who I won't name as that is their business.
4. Speaking at referee functions.
5. Speaking at coach gatherings arranged by Soccer 2.

I can also tell you of the coaches Auckland City have had since the inception of the NZFC that Allan's salary was the lowest of any of them.

We have a great ability to be quite disrespectful to other people in the game. It really isn't warranted. I quite often think the major challenges sport lie within not anything external.

Perhaps you might like to measure your own input to the game before questioning anyone elses.

Regards

2ndBest - what years were those Chatham Cups and which club?

I'm wondering if you are putting down Central United's two triumphs in 1997 & 98.

I pretty sure Ricki was the coach of the National League / Summer League squad while Bill Harris was the coach with the Northern League squad that also won the Chatham Cups.

No disrespect to Ricki but I could imagine Bill Harris would like the recognition for what he achieved.

Cheers
