Once again this will need to be moved.

I missed the first 15 mins however I find it tough to pick a Man of the Match. I thought everyone played their part, Smeltz way better than against Australia, Elliott not as good and we missed Brown at times as Christie in my mind was not up to it.

Nelsen was a rock and drove everything from the back for us to keep a clean sheet.

Elliot's delivery to the box was hugely improved on Mondays game, thought he was key in midfield for us again. Christie didn't show up much and seemed to be more effective in defence than going forward.
Nelsen was huge as always and ran the show at the back.
Smith seems to have a very cool head but they got in behind him a couple of times. I think he is a touch better than Reid however as he keeps his feet where Reid was guilty of diving in and also
giving away too many fouls. Can see him potentially giving away a pen along the line.
Smeltz finish was world class, did bugger all else all game but he's taken his chance and scored the winner and that's what matters.
Fallon was strong up front in the air again, a few too many fouls for my liking but showed his strength and aerial ability to beat Vidic for the goal.
Elliott for me, just ahead of Nelsen and Smeltz.

Surprised Rory has one vote. He was far and away the MoM for mine - absolutely dominated the best defender in the world.

i agree i think Rory gives us a hell of a lot up front and allows us to bring the other 2 lads into scoring positions with a fair hope of receiving the ball

he also provides a decent outlet when we are pinned back and working more with a 5-4-1 system

yep a great leadership role again today - and the team has proved that they learnt something about hanging on to a result following the 94th min lesson that aussie taught us

I voted Fallon, really like his ability to win the ball in the air.

Thought the other two who have recently joined us,  Smith and Reid did very well also. I would like to see them again with Nelsen, who organised them well, wonder if they may be the starting 3 at the back through the cup

Feel we are in good nick going forward from here

Just need our good AM/DM midfielder back

Smeltz, for getting the goal.  Had opportunity, took it, and took it well.  MOM isn't meant to be for 5 seconds of effort, but hey - he got the goal and we won.

Fallon had lesser impact for me today. great flick for the goal and a really tough job he had, but i actually thought he struggled to hold ball up and was shown up for a lack of speed just over 2 or 3 yards.

King Nelsen. he saved our arse many times.

Fallon is great with the flick on, but is ordinary in front of goal (as he was on monday night)

Fallon was everywhere and the commentaters commented on this as well! cant go past Nelsen in every game.... The way smith and reid were able to step up and hold there world class attack off is a credit to the #6!! I vote Fallon as Nelsen will get most votes most games lol

fair points - i guess I'm a little swayed by the fact that he has added an aspect to our game that we are really benefiting from,

i probably was less focussed on the specifics of today's game - i'd still rate him in our top 4 players on the day

Thought everyone played well.

Christie included, however he needs to hit his short passes better as that nearly cost us a couple times.

Fallon for MOM, got the assist and generally caused havoc.

Not so much on who was MOM but who didn't step up.
Reid looked a bit at sea when on D. Did ok when going forward.
Nelsen MOM for me, looked pissed off at times with some of the slack play going on around him.
Paston will need to be better than this performance dropping balls he should be catching cleanly and flapping at a lollypop of a deflection.
Christie was out of his depth, I reckon be the last game he gets to play. Two flick ons that a striker would be proud of.
Wood and Smith did enough to keep them in the hunt for starting slots in S.A.
Bertos needs to use the ball better going forward also not strong enough on defense. After the Aussie game can give him a pass just for being on the park.

All the others performed well.
It was a friendly and with two games to go before the BS stops, we don't need more injuries to key players.

That's very tough on Paston. Considering the length of time he has spent out of competitive football I think he has shaped up very well in the two matches so far -  in fact better than I had dared hope. Overall he's been confident in the air, his postioning has been good and he's made a number of sharp reaction saves. No complaints from me.

Is Paston playing in the World Cup? Then yes he needs to perform like it. How long has he been training for? He should be in top form.
He put the ball to opposition players feet twice today from a flap and a punch that he should have caught.
If he does that when we play Italy he will be picking the ball from the net.

Are you just copying the terrible commentators?

Paston played well. Very harsh to say he flapped at everything. Keepers cant always catch the ball,it is quite often better to punch it,even partially so. I can only think of one instance where he went to punch it and didnt really connect. Never did he flap at the ball.

Wow clearly you know nothing about goalkeeping. Have you never heard of confidence/match fitness being one of the most important things for goal keepers to have? Paston is also a player that relies more than usual on confidence.

Not to mention he played great. He was terrific in the air and positioning was great. I would say this could be one of his best seasons (WC and A-League 2010/11) ever if this keeps on continuing.

Paston conceded zero goals in this match, and in this other one last year Buffon did concede so therefore Paston is the better keeper. its just simple math.chocnut2010-05-30 23:53:24

Maybe the reason I didn't rate the performance of Paston is that I do know about Goal keeping and coaching football.

I agree, the Rory that I saw yesterday was the one I watch at Argyle although he gave me a wave which was cool.

I thought Smith played well but was dissapointed with Bertos, had a very average game by his standards and as for Plodder, I've never been a fan but thought he played OK for a player out of his depth.  For those of us at the game it was obvious about 1/2 before kick-off who were going to start.

PS we should beat Slovakia based on what I saw yesterday, Rory, Nelsen, Reid, Woods, Elliot are all alot stronger/taller then them, they bouced off the Cameroon guys who were unlucky not to win the game (I wish Song was born here or had a kiwi family member   ;-)   )

While Vidic is a pretty good player, he's clearly not the best defender in the world.

But yeah, I've rated Fallon ever since he's put on an All Whites' shirt, he's done very well for us. He'd be the first forward on my team sheet if I was Ricki.

And they have to be useless stats, don't go getting fancy and finding stats that actually correlate to a goalkeepers ability.
