Obviously had no idea where to put this, but it'll get answered in this thread.
Is football actually the most played sport in NZ? having an arguement with a mate of mine who claims touch rugby is?

Most registered players is the official stat I believe.

I.e. more people might play tiddlywnks or chess or touch but there are more people playing for football clubs than any other sport in NZ.Addicks2010-06-06 22:42:08

Those confidence intervals means that none of those sports outranks any of the others when it comes to statistical significance.

Not quite, but the numbers are not quite what they might seem.

They are the result of a SPARC survey re participation, and they indicate the percentage of the population that has participated at least once in the given activity over the past 12 months.

Borrowing your mate's kayak for a quick spin on Hataitai Beach carries the same weight as playing 18 matches for the Wharfies on sodden pitches.

Hence weird results.

I know, I know, its serious!

Golf isn't a sport, it's a hobby. So is rugby, I suppose.

I suppose that walking or swimming is not noted as a sport because of that.

No. But it would be the most lucratively participated sport.I would imagine that the high subs for members to maintain ground upkeep but also for the SkyTV coverage of golf.

Remember seeing a SPARC report a few years back which suggested that it was, but can't seem to find it now.

Wiki seems to suggest that it's the most played sport among NZ adult males.

Beat up much?

"Interestingly, the NZRU ran a provocative ad promoting the All Blacks-South Africa test in Auckland on July 10, with the bold words, "the exact opposite of a friendly match with nothing at stake" at the same time as the All Whites were playing warmup "friendlies" in Europe.

But Dalton played down the intention of the ad, one of a series of three from Auckland Rugby's agency, Big Communications, that was approved by the NZRU.

"It actually had nothing to do with football directly," Dalton said.

"It was all around promoting the rivalry between New Zealand and South Africa. The third one was just saying, `hey, this is not a friendly'.

Give that man an Oscar...

Does the guy think we are stupid, or has he had too many rucks to the head? The article was a beat up though, I agree.

The article did give some interesting stats about sport participation. SPARC....185,292 NZ adults took part in football in 2007. In addition there were 23,500 secondary school players and 57,000 5 to 13 year olds playing football last year(up 12% )

Against this 145,472 reg rugby players.

What does this mean...SFA coz stats are meaningless unless you are comparing apples with apples. BUT it does confirm what we already know that there are more people playing football than rugby in NZ and the growth rate of football participation is higher.

This seems to be a bigger issue for rugby heads.....personally I get sick of this " is football a threat to rugby" crap. I don't give a toss....just get on with enjoying the sports you follow.

I found a couple of pdfs (one for adult sport, one for junior) on the sparc website a few months ago that had football as the number one for junior, and as the number two for adults, both next to rugby. but adding 1 and 2 together, it had football as the highest participation, ever so slightly over rugby. i thought the date was fairly recent, but i havnt had any luck tracking them down since.
