Nelsen.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Soccer: Injury scare for Nelsen

All Whites captain Ryan Nelsen has suffered a suspected serious knee injury playing for Blackburn in the English Premier League this morning.

Nelsen left the field during the first half of Rovers' 3-0 win over Bolton at Ewood Park after landing heavily on his leg following an aerial challenge.

Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce is waiting to find out the full extent of the injury and is praying the problem does not sideline his skipper for a lengthy period.

"Having only looked at it on the replay I'm hoping that he's twisted his ankle and not his knee," Allardyce told the club's official website.

"But he was holding his knee which was the big problem for me.

"I think it is his one where he's had surgery before, so it'll be 48 hours before we can tell and we'll keep our fingers crossed, not just for us but for him."

If Nelsen has torn his cruciate ligaments he would likely miss the World Cup finals in South Africa.

Ryan will probably know by now if he will be at the World Cup or not (assuming he's selected). I pray to every higher power out there that he's OK. Toffeeman2010-02-22 14:10:24

Its no longer a problem.

Saw it.  Went for a header.  All weight landed on his right leg.  Ouch.  Went off for a couple a minutes.  Came back on.  A relief.  But a little bit gingerly.  Was subbed 2-3 minutes later.  Allardyce was talking about ankle - not the suspect knee.  Which is good.  Personally, I don't think it's serious.  He seemed to be walking alright.  But forget Mexico.

Yeah, and if Paston suddenly develops gangrene, he might miss the world cup. Let's not start the angst - or fall for newspaper stories that like to promote angst because it grabs attention - before we actually hear from Blackburn what's up with Nelsen's ankle/knee.

Ryan Nelsen is cautiously optimistic:

"The surgeons and doctors who looked at the knee after the game said there didn't appear to be anything major wrong structurally.

"I think the knee has hyper-extended, which could put you out for two or three weeks or up to 10 weeks.

"I was able to carry on for a few minutes before going off, which is encouraging, and if it had been really major such as an ACL [anterior cruciate ligament], it would have blown out completely. It hasn't swollen up too much but still, you never know with these things. It could still be something serious. We'll have to wait for the results of the scans."

I bet now Rory Fallon is grizzling because he has to go to Mexico and Ryan doesn't.  But seriously - all good as far as Tommy Smith getting a run goes.

Looks like the scan results were positive and he is out for only 6 weeks, meaning he will be fine for the world cup.

"However, a scan has revealed that, despite tearing a muscle behind the knee and suffered extensive bone bruising, Nelsen could be back in action by the end of March.

"It's probably the best result I could have got," Nelsen told Radio Sport."
