I think the Bahrain game was the most important. The Wales game was a turning point. This is a big result though, our second win against a European team, and against one in the top 15. Even with all the 'buts' it is big.

The Saudi 5-0 was amazing but it was sort of surreal with all those goals flying in and that bright green astroturf and the almost empty stadium. The Saudis were already out of contention for the WC at that point and looked barely interested.

China in Singapore was the real deal, the culmination of a long exhausting campaign. I'll never forget the agony of those last 10 minutes as long as I live.

Bahrain will probably be the greatest football of my entire life and very tough to beat (even if we nab a WIN in South Africa - I won't be there at the ground).

But from what I hear about the Road to Spain the 5-0 and 2-0 were pretty epic in the fabric of NZ Football history.

2-1 v China, ahmad. China got one back with 10 to go, hence the agony!

2-2 vs Wales and Beating Georgia don't come close to beating Serbia. "Friendly" or not, it's just like any non tri nations or world cup All Blacks game. There's just no trophy given to the winner. Instead they get ranking points. Marko Pantelic, Nikola Zigic, Nemenja Vidic, Zoran Tosic - These are huge names footballing wise. Massive result.

Our worst result by far is being held 1-1 by Scotland. That was a very dark day.

Three for me, and two for them.

Why do you hate the Scottish so much? Or, Scottish football so much?

I believe the worst results are when we lose to Island nations. Id take a 5-0 loss to Spain over a 3-1 loss to Fiji any day. Theyre probably equally embarrasing to the NZ image, but we should always be beating the Islands.

Some are questioning the validity of labelling the 1-0 result against Serbia as the greatest ever feat in NZ Football history.I'm a football n00b as well as relatively young so how does this compare to other results in terms of significance? Is this the highest ever ranked (at the time) opponent we have ever beaten? What are our other great results?5-0 vs. Saudi Arabia?4-0 vs. Mexico in 1980?1-0 vs. Bahrain in 2009?

Can't believe that nobody has answered the question.
The greatest result was 5-0 v Saudi because we needed to win by that margin to have a chance of a play off with China. It was also an away game.

I agree, this is number 1 even though second half was very average (seems to be an AW tradition)

1. Saudi Arabia
2. Mexico
3. Serbia
4. China
5. Bahrain
6. Every time we've nocked Aussie out of Confeds & WC qualifiers

I've got those 2 friendlies above the WC Qualifiers as they are good results against better teams then the ones we've hade to qualify against and China is more important then Bahrain as it was our first time at the WC and we had to play a million games and travel all round Asia beating Aussie on the way unlike this time.

From what I've seen and read, I'd place the 2-1 win over China above Saudi Arabia, then Bahrain, then Serbia, Mexico, a lot of wins over Australia and then turning points like Wales. I think scoring our two only World Cup goals (against Scotland) has to rank right up there as well, as does the first point at a Senior men's tournament (Iraq).

For me, the two stand out results (In terms of the raw emotion I felt) were the 4-3 loss to Italy and the Bahrain game.

Of course, this could all have changed in a month's time.

2-1 over China in 82. Big pressure match with loads of international media attention as it was the last remaining World Cup slot. That Rufer goal was a cracker, the set piece headers, the flick in to space and wham, history. TV1 showed media coverage from around the world and that goal was shown everywhere, Poland, Russia, Brazil.

What I witnessed on Saturday though was a very competent performance, world class. No soft/tired/late goals. I've watched Brockie, Lochhead et al & thought they were above average, but on Saturday they were outstanding, Elliot too. Just solid.

More gushing from Ricki.
It was a friendly, Ricki insults the great games that have gone before.
It reminds me of him jumping around like a girl (sorry girls) at a con cup draw.

Because what we really need for the game in this country is to talk down our successes.

Herbert was involved in just about all the 'great games before' and he can see the value for the game in this country of making sure it makes the news and rides it's greatest (or 2nd greatest) era for all it's worth.

What result did you tip for the match ?  Maybe Ricki was just celebrating proving your wrong... again.

Not surprised that you think like that. you are too young to have seen any football worth while.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

No ones talking it down boy.
Certainly talking it up though. Thought he was insulting to the great efforts in real games past.
Ricki is a gusher.
And your last statement is just insane dribble.

I don't see how a football friendly is much different to a rugby test? Sure nothing is riding on a friendly, but nothing of note is riding on the All Blacks versus Wales except for a 50-odd year unbeaten record and probably a cup no one knows the name of. Quite often teams send 'B' sides away for tests and experiment for tournaments. In both cases teams play with pride and of course don't want to lose. I don't see the difference. The Serbia result is the same as Russia beating the All Blacks, in my opinion. And mark me down for the Saudi result as the greatest ever. You couldn't write a better script!
I'd more compare it to Kenya beating France in Rugby, if I was comparing.

Serbia in rugby are ranked 63 places below the All Blacks and the All Whites are ranked the same below Serbia in football

Rugby is played by a few, football is played by the world, so you can't compare.
Still it was just a friendly, and Boxhead was right, Serbia played like crap so don't get sucked in by Rick's insulting gushing.
I wish kiwi's would get over rugby. Who gives a flying fark

To me it's this.
I will never forget this night.
A B&W tele at a mate's Parent's sleep out.

I was almost arrested for celebrating in the street & crashing through his neighbour's hedge.

Thanks for reminding me.
