The dream run of All White striker Shane Smeltz in 2007 continued on Monday night as he walked away from the annual New Zealand Football Awards Dinner as the Nike Mens Player of the Year.

The Wellington Phoenix forward is in hot goal scoring form, sitting near the top of the A-League golden boot standings and firing four goals in his last three All Whites matches, including the equaliser in New Zealands come from behind win in Vanuatu on Saturday.

There will be little time to celebrate for Smeltz who has recovered from the corked thigh he picked up in Port Vila as the All Whites are in camp preparing to take on Vanuatu in Wellington on Wednesday night.

There may be a congratulatory nod or two at training however, as fellow All Whites Ben Sigmund (NZFC Player of the Year) and Jacob Spoonley (Young Player of the Year) both picked up awards of their own, while Ricki Herbert was rewarded for his work with the national team and the Wellington Phoenix with the Coach of the Year gong.

Strong performances at the FIFA Womens World Cup saw Sweden based Football Ferns captain Rebecca Smith also a nominee for FIFAs World Womens Player named as Nike Womens Player of the Year, while her World Cup team mate and double nominee Abby Erceg won Nike Young Womens Player of the Year.

Team of the Year went to Waitakere United whose 2006-07 season finished with both the Oceania Champions League title and the NZFC Minor Premiership.

Talk about turning his career around!! Well done Smeltz.

Great to see we now have a home-grown hero playing in NZ!

Hopefully NZ can capitailize on this, as well as the All-Whites and make sure football takes off!!!

Congrats!

good on the lad, and good for the Phoenix,

better for us as Phoenix fans than having news about a Blackburn or Celtic player on the radio

In hindsight would liked to have seen Mossy nominated.

I say tackle him in the face.

he would've saved about twice as many as Smeltz has scored

Well done Smeltz. I think it's better for football in NZ if he gets the award as he plays here.

I remember when he first signed quite a few us on here thought it was a mistake. I just tried going back to see those posts but this site doesn't let you go back as far as that.

Congrats Smeltzy. You're the first name on our teamsheet now.

Though I think Chris Killen should have won. Good advertising for Phoenix though.

Well done Smeltz. Sorry, but I didnt think he should have got it though.
I also strongly disagreed with the choice of for Asst Ref of the year(and its not the first time they have given him the award). I dont recall him ever having a good game. He seems to spend to much time watching the game and not looking were he's supposed to be looking. I laugh every time the ref over rules him, which is often.

A dog with a bone :)

Who would you have picked?

Not saying you're wrong of course, just interested

Outstanding work Shane, you've had a great season so far and I can only hope you keep rising and take the Nix into the top 4 with your goals.....

A hattrick at the RoF tomorrow night would be good....and follow it up with another on Sat night at the Dome.....just to celebrate!

Ryan. Killen also ahead of Smeltz, because I would rate his goal scoring run in the SPL before getting injuried as better than Smeltz's curent run of form. Thats just my opinion and as I said "well done Smeltz".

Realistically you could just pick Ryan Nelson every year, but I think Killen has been the biggest improvement over the last year. Started in the Champions League even!
