Do you reckon the Swiss are crowning themselves unoffical World Champions today?
If not, they should be!
And if the Swiss are not, then Luxembourg most certainly should be.

It is a fact,we are the only undedefeated side at the WC,I dont see how mentioning this fact is considered getting carried away,no one is claiming we were the best side or anything.

Learn to have fun with things like this. It is pretty awesome. Its our mark on the World cup, that we never thought we would even be at,and a fact that we never dreamed would happen.

Actually, this is one of those rare times when the unofficial world champions and the official world champions are the same team. The UFWC is decided using the boxing championship approach e.g. held until you lose and then it is passed on to whoever beat you. The UFWC website has tracked through the holders right from the first ever international all the way to current day. The Dutch were the UFWC until they lost to Spain.

I haven't read all the history of the UFWC, but I can only recall this happening in 1966 with England (whose next loss came to Scotland three or four matches later, creating a newfound fondness for the UFWC north of the border!).

The 2010 WC was the first WC in three or four tournaments that we had the UFWC even make the finals.

The only thing I don't like about the UFWC is that they count friendlies, which doesn't seem right, but it's all a bit of fun anyway.

They forgot the British virgin Islands. Knocked out on away goals in their first tie in qualifying. 1-1 and 2-2. so technically they are the only undefeated team for the part in which they took part.

I think I'd heard of this before, but I've never looked it up before.

The full list of undisputed UFWC and WC champions is:

Italy 1939
Uruguay 1954
West Germany 1958
Brazil 1958
England 1966
West Germany 1974
Argentina 1978
Italy 1982
Argentina 1986
Brazil 1998
Brazil 1998 (lost and regained the undisputed title in same year)

I just got into this the other day. Gave it a good bookmarking:

Next Championship match under a month away - Spain vs Mexico.

Interestingly, Zimbabwe held it for a while - 7 matches. I think this should be New Zealand's next goal. Keep challenging the holders, then just arrange lots of 5 match series with Vanuatu Papua New Guinea to zoom us up the rankings.

As far as the unbeaten at the World Cup finals goes - the obvious argument by the likes of the Dutch is that they didn't lose in the qualifying (NZ lost to Fiji), and the only reason they didn't go undefeated is that they actually won games in the World Cup Finals group stages.

But yes. It's an interesting stat all the same.

Lets celebrate this rare event. Even rare-er being New Zealand. Not taking it that we are world champions or taking myself too seriously but hey I am damn proud of the All Whites!

Perhaps that friendly at the ROF later in the year could be against Spain to decide?? Go on Ricki & Frank (Van Hattum) make it happen.

what? "Dont get carried away"!!

It is utterly legendary for the All Whites to be the only undefeated team at the World Cup! We rock. So totally unlikely, so contrary to all pundits expectations, so loving it.

Of course it doesnt mean we are a top side or even especially good. It just means what it is. WE WERE THE ONLY UNBEATEN TEAM. Yessss. Not to mention we finished ahead of the World Champs.

If you cant enjoy those facts then you are just a big fat downer.

And the British virgin Islands in qualifying for 2010. Lost on away goals after drawing their two matches 1-1 and 2-2.

I have to say I kind of agree with ratue in the herald.  being unbeaten only means that we didn't get far enough to a stage where you had to be beaten i.e. every top 16 other than the winner will lose a match.  Being unbeaten is excellent, I'm not sure that being "the only unbeaten team" is anything other than a statistical anomoly

Nobody is saying it is though. Its just a fun stat, and kind of cool considering the expectation previous to the tournament that we'd lose every game.

This. We'll be all too happy if the All Whites lose a game next time, as long as it is in the second round ... or further.

Im sick of people nit picking at the AWs. At the start of the qualifying campaign we were 157th, outside odds to beat Bahrain, expected to be flogged at the WC... now look at what happened? And i bet people would still be complaining if we lost 1-0 to Spain in the final...

Ratue can suck it, and keep on sucking it.

I've got one , and yes we didn't a game but hey, I didn't think we'd not lose either.

Argue a much as you like, I bet you will smile when you're in a pub quiz in 20 years or so and 'Who was the only undefeated team at the 2010 Football World Cup?' pops up.

I'll end up giving the answer to the rest of the room because I won't be able to stop myself from yelling it out.

It may only be a statistical anomaly, but it's putting NZ and the team on the map.

Went to a doctor in Bangkok last week, and he brought it up (two weeks after the final). Was talking to my sister in the States today, and even she's aware of it.

Didn't Vicelich have a pretty decent (i.e. on-target) long-range strike against the Italians too? What if...

A great historic thread - what I don't get is when Kiwis (most rugby heads but many football fans too) denigrate the All Whites for not being on the same level as the world's best sides - as if that's a fair comparison.

Success and achievements in life are always relative - to circumstances etc. Most of us will never be millionaires, win an Academy Award or Nobel Prize - but can have our moments...

Why not just appreciate any success NZ teams have in context as a football minnow without expecting performances on the same level as the world's best sides?

We can just weigh up what success means, what constitutes a decent level of performance in our own terms.

2010 and 1982 All Whites - both teams surpassed all expectations in different eras. Great results in our own circumstances.

I recently came across some British World Cup 2010 previews online and it's actually hilarious now to read their dire predictions of the hammerings we were going to receive, how mediocre most of our players were supposed to be etc.

2009 - 2010: a great era in NZ football: This is what FIFA had to say in their review of the 2009 World Club Championship where Auckland City's success was the icing on the cake to me (I'll never forget the stadium PA blaring Bowie's "Heroes" after Auckland's unlikely victories) : no informed person would expect a tiny semi-pro team (mostly amateur players) to beat the fully pro UAE club hosts Al Ahli (annual budget of millions) and the African champs TP Mazembe (from a continent of passionate millions where football is the only game in town) who made the Final against Inter the following year.

 http://www.fifa.com/tournaments/archive/clubworldcup/uae2009/

"...at the conclusion to the tournament multiple sources had reason for celebration: the United Arab Emirates for playing an estimable role as hosts; Auckland City for enhancing what has been a glorious year for football in New Zealand...

It's been a fantastic tournament for us. We weren't expected to win one game, but we've won twice and finished fifth. It's an amazing feeling.

Auckland City coach Paul Posa

Auckland City, alike Pohang, exceeded all expectations. New Zealand’s record at the FIFA Club World Cup read four matches, four defeats prior to kick-off. However, Paul Posa’s disciplined, industrious outfit upset local side Al Ahli to reach the quarter-finals, where they gave Atlante a stricter examination than most predicted in a 3-0 defeat, and the Kiwis belied the odds once again in the match for fifth place, beating Mazembe 3-2."
