You're also rather harsh. Carmichael is hardly ineffectual. Patterson has quality, hence Ipswich Academy. Rufer certainly is the pick of the bunch though

He (Carmichael) ain't doing much for Central at the mo.

Ineffectual? He DREAMS of being ineffectual ,,,he saw a tackle once ,didnt like it

I do think Carmichael is a good and better footballer. I think playing at Central/ACFC, he gets lost behind others (Tade, Corrales, Exposito, Danko, Dickinson. Not one Kiwi name in them) and he plays on the flank at Central as opposed to where he normally plays as a striker. Not sure where his best position is but he has a lot more than Patterson does. Granted the comparison is not fair because of the age but considering the 2 times I have seen him this year, he has been quiet, got on and done the job, produced some quality and given away very few fouls and possession.

Sure, Carmichael is quality. But for a guy who scored an international hat-trick in the Under-17's (then joked about maybe joining Arsenal) he's been staying a bit too quiet for me.

When is the world cup squad announced?

Permalink Permalink

will we be going with the deep lying mid set up for our qualifiers like against china (that seemed to work very well, Dan Keat seemed comfortable) or go back to the wingbacks/three defenders and strikers in center mid position shambles?

With exciting young talent like Alex Rufer emerging from the u-17's and picking up pro contracts, really looking forward now to watching the FIFA u-17 World Cup in October (hopefully on Sky) to see how they go:

http://www.fifa.com/u17worldcup/news/newsid=2134856/index.html

While results at UAE 2013 are one thing, recent evidence is that the U-17 team as a development vehicle is paying significant dividends. During New Zealand’s final 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ qualifiers in March, 14 squad member had previously featured at either an U-17 or U-20 FIFA World Cup since 2007, compared to only three in Ricki Herbert’s squad at the same stage last time.

"I think sometimes we underestimate the quality of players we are developing in New Zealand,” says Bazeley. “Players who have come from overseas are surprised with the standard and it's higher than what they were expecting.”

(On 26 August, the qualified countries will find out which sides stand between them and glory at the Official Draw)

Oh come on 2B. It's a great draw. Testing ourselves against the big boys means:

a) if we get smashed we can say football has still got a long way to go in this small rugby mad nation at the end of the world and give us the chance to discuss how poor our development pathway is;

b) we get close or a result and we can talk about how great our youth development progamme is in this "punch above its weight football burgeoning country"

Surely, it's a win-win either way ;)

Strange how our youf sides always get drawn against Uruguay - it's so regular you could make money betting on it. Last two under-20 World Cups anyway and now these u-17's.

Toughest draw you could imagine really but will attract more NZ media attention as countries except the obvious football bastions don't register with the NZ media...and anyone who follows world football will  realise that Ivory Coast breeds some great players.

The other groups don't seem to feature three teams of great ability such as we are facing:

Brazil will face host country United Arab Emirates, Honduras and Slovakia.

Defending champion Mexico with Iraq, Nigeria and Sweden.

Argentina is in a group with Austria, Canada and Iran. European Under-17 champion Russia will face Japan, Tunisia and Venezuela. Croatia will play Morocco, Panama and Uzbekistan.

And no Australia - ha, ha!!!

You are right about Australia but someone mentioned to me the other day that  they are at the WC in Brazil--- are you?

Well, only time will tell - it's going to be even more intense than 2009 qualifiers!!!

They need to hurry up and name the squad as well.

so no training because they don't know the squad?

Hay is right to bring up FTC costs etc on the way but still why the demarcation is the World Cup? If pay to play is inherently wrong than FTC / NTC / Reps should be "free".

Yeah I would mate and have done! I don't feel the need to be paid for something that I love doing!
Did wynton pay the old guy in wellington that was down at the ground with him every day?? (not likely).
I think it is BS that these coaches are getting paid but would rather FTC coaches then the many that are getting it at junior clubs, I heard one club on the shore charges about $750 per player a season for a "professional" coach! clubs have full time "coach development, player development" jobs thats where its going wrong!

No, I have no idea if Danny Hay does any coaching , and if so if he charges.
Yes, some people believe FTC is a cash cow. I'm not particularly swayed either way. If you want what is percieved to be superior coaching then you pay. It's not a difficult concept to grasp. Whterher it's the "right" thing to do is of more interest.
I have very limited experience with any private academy. As they are a business I assume making some profit is part of the reasoning.

thats not what i'm saying! and non of the jobs i have mention warrant being full time! have the clubs junior clubs don't need coaching development managers that what teh FDO's get paid for! I would love to be a full time football coach! Until that happens I have enough passion for the sport to do my coaching for free!

I understand where you are coming from but there are people in NZ who coach full time. Juniors, seniors etc because that is all they know.

If I have to pay to play on bishop park, these guys can pay to play at a World Cup. It's not that much of an outrage. They aren't exactly royalty.
