Does anyone know if any decent players emerged from the national u16 tournie in Wellington? And when the u17 national squad will be named?

Looking forward to seeing who makes this team... with the WeeNix doing so well in the SSP I'm hopeful for another positive age group showing at the U17 WC.

Well, Italiano, Fox, Ben Mata, Henry-Sinclair, Singh, Litfin, Rogerson, Cahill-Fleury, McGarry, Rufer, Wood, Johnson and Bell are all too old or too Australian for this team, so I'm not sure anything can be taken from the WeeNix's performances.

Just have to confirm all the transfers from other schools to Sacred Heart and St Kents before they will confirm Squad.

Was Max Mata in my list of WeeNixers who aren't under-17s (answer: no, he wasn't)

Max Mata is only 16!? Jeez, bright future on this kid! Already 5 goals in the SS Premiership.

Olly Whyte, Sam Sutton are two I'd think might join Max Mata from the PeeWeeNix. And apologies, MetalLegNZ, I use a semi-colon ;) for a wink.

"Just waiting for transfers to Sacred Heart" - my favourite dry forum comment of this festive season. awesome!

yeah max mata 16 blows my mind. wonder if 17s t ournie can spring board him overseas. I heard he gets a bit homesick. Will ask Danny hay to say a little prayer for him

- ps hope ollie derlin makes it too and fan favourite arzan todywalla.

No one will be manning the fax at NZFA and doors will be locked for Xmas. No chance of a press release when there's bars to becat. Can you feed us a few interesting inclusions and exclusions.  It sounds like you are in the know?

any news on U17s squad?

I wouldn't expect a public announcement until after the holiday period (whether that's next Wednesday or Jan 9). Those who need to know, know, so there's no great urgency.

I heard that a squad of 22 chosen for a January camp, and then 18 will be given their call ups for the qualifiers . No idea the makeup of the squad

apparently the 22 boys for the Jan camp all sworn to keep their inclusion under wraps at this stage

I don't understand the need for secrecy, allow players to celebrate their selection.

If some will be cut, I can understand to some degree the non announcement. The last campaign was similar, although the reasons then were 5 or 6 players awaiting FIFA exemptions after the Wynne fiasco. I cant believe this is the reason now, most likely when there is a final squad it will be announced.

Just watched the 17s in camp play a makeshift group of locally based 20s extended squad. Windy and tough to play, but up front the 17s have some talent that should trouble defences. Max Mata and Matt Palmer, both big lads, and then Mat Conroy looked very lively down the left side. Game ended 1-1 but was a good hit out for the 17s, who came into camp yesterday and out tomorrow.

how are they not in a fulltime camp with it being holidays?

Permalink Permalink

understand they are now on a break and the final squad of 18 reassemble in Auckland on the 2nd Feb  - seems to be a waste of a good few weeks in the build up to a world cup qualifying tournament

Permalink Permalink

wonder what Mr Hudson thinks about the countries u17 side having a "break" a few weeks out from a qualification tournament.

Permalink Permalink

on one hand 'a waste of a few weeks' on the other hand are you going to pay for it, Beaks?

Permalink Permalink

money is always an obstacle agreed and not saying I have any answers but  with more than half the squad being Auckland based , the remainder of the squad could be billeted out with the Auckland based squad members as one option.

spoke to one of the players and sounded like the camp was more medical testing than football. Did ECG and other tests . The game v 20s was only hit out

If the players already know and have had time to rejoice or see their sports psychologist - how about a few names for us in advance. For example did oliie derlin and arzwan make it?
