Cacace linked to Napoli i've heard, they need backup at left back with Mario Rui leaving so could be viable

edit: from an Napoli fan who says there's genuine interest from the club, take it with a grain of salt

Bell wants to be a professional footballer - why would he turn down a contract?

Had he been offered one earlier, would he have gone to the states, can he no continue his education after he plays, or during (as others do?)

Why would he risk a scholarship for a professional contract that may not pay him much, and which may not work out for him at any rate, when he can be in the position to pursue a professional career next season (if he wants to), with a degree from a good US university as a back-up plan.

I think a lot of people here overestimate the lure of professional football, for many guys it's a huge roll of the dice that doesn't work out a pretty significant percentage of the time, and quite frankly you'd be dumb to turn your back on a good Plan B, especially when in the long run that Plan B isn't really stopping you from having a shot at a professional career at any rate.

Well yeah, Voerman comments here all the time and I know Phil Rollo reads as well. Would be stupid for a NZ football journalist not to be here really.

Surely the Cacace to Napoli comment was made in jest?
Libby has a great future ahead of him but let's not jump the gun shall we? He'd be torn apart if he went straight to serie A, even knowing the language and country.

The thought makes me think About poor Josh Brillante. Signed for Fiorentina in 2014 after doing well with the Jest. Starts in the opening game of the season vs Roma. Gets annihilated and gives up a goal. Taken off after 35 minutes and never seen again!

Have to say its a pretty tedious story to run with respect to football. There are a bunch of other things that could be running but they have chosen this insipid bit of drivel that feeds into our Nationalistic insecurities. We see these types of stories all the time in our media which are really pathetic. Every time we play Australia in a 1 day cricket match some form of the underarm incident gets dragged out into our media for example. Its been like that since it happened some 28 years ago. I havent worked out if its lazy pathetic journalism or if we are that pathetic in reacting to this sort of story.

Seriously who really gives a fudge if an U20 player is getting abuse on his instagram feed because he made some small gesture during a game. Surely the media  could have had some sort of story printed about the Womens teams upcoming WC games than this mind numbingly dull bit of nothingness. it would have had more value to the game here and been far less lazy a bit of journalism. Fudgeing pathetic.

Yes his dad supports Napoli and I seem to recall he does too but that's a bit of a stretch. Also, I read the Italian sports news everyday and haven't heard a thing about it.

Yeah wouldn’t believe the Cacace thing, got it from not a very close source to the club.

One thing that is certain though is Joe Bell being enquired about by a few Bundesliga clubs. From the mouth of Wynton

I would be disappointed if Bell turned down becoming a Pro because it might not work out - not the right mindset IMO to becoming successful in any profession, especially one as cut throat as football.

To be successful, he needs to have absolute faith in himself and his potential.

University will always be there (maybe not free if he is on a full scholarship), the chance to go pro maybe not.

Except he can play football in the states while getting a degree to fall back on at no cost. Also from the University over there, they also lead into the MLS draft or other pro opportunities.

I'm not saying he wouldn't turn down a deal for a professional contract anywhere if offered a good one with years on the contract but he would be stupid to come to the Nix when we can only really give him a year at this stage. Doesn't matter if the owners and Dome say we will be around after next season, until it is confirmed, we only have one year.

I think you'll find we've written all sorts of stories about football. We're the only media outlet that's had comprehensive coverage of the Football Ferns this year, and I'll guarantee we do more stories ahead of their World Cup opener than anyone else.

Not to mention our coverage of the Under-20 World Cup, which was also far more comprehensive than any other NZ media outlet.

The Cacace story – which is a story, it's a pretty crazy reaction from the various Colombians, and not something that we normally see in New Zealand – didn't come from it being posted forums (Related: We weren't the only, or even the first, media outlet to cover it).

Not that there's anything wrong with getting story tips from these forums, there's all sorts of great gossip on here.

Article here talking to scouts who are attending the competition. Gabriel Luiz of Leeds United said he was impressed with NZ, especially Libby Cacace. Whilst, Bartosz Barnas of Willem II also said New Zealand did a "fantastic job".

Fantastic to see, possibly the first time which I can recall where scouts have openly commented on and complimented our players after showing their wares on the world stage.

Throw Pijnaker and Bell in the mix too, they both had very good tournaments.

Good to see what we can offer on the World stage when we get a team on the park eh?

I'd say Cacace is most definately a wanted man... if he doesn't get signed before the start of the upcoming season, he's got one more season at the Nix at most and then given his best asset (consistency), he'll be gone for for sure. Is he on contract for two more years?

The Leeds link might be interesting, from memory Bielsa was also a fan of Tuiloma (I think he gave Bill his first start in Ligue 1?).

Still at ES I think. Haven't read anything about going overseas as yet.

Too good for Swedish Div 4.

What would help Nix persuade someone like Pijnaker to look at the club, is hanging out with Waine, Elliott, Stensness, Singh & Cacace for a month. Plus of course Buckingham as coach, who has a background with the club, talking favourably of the Nix's setup, future etc.

Admittedly this was about 3 or 4 years ago, but I remember talking to him about where he wants to end up and he said he would want to either play for the phoenix or go to America on a scholarship.

Ecuador have made the semis and beat Uruguay pretty comfortably, not sure how that can be seen as an easier game.

On what basis can you definitively say that Colombia was a harder game than Ecuador would have been?

I thought resting players almost paid off for us in extra time against Columbia. Bar the odd counter attack from them, I though we were the better team through that period. If Singh had have slotted one of his shots or Mata scored with that header. we all might be looking at things very different. But hey that's football I guess.

The U20 cycle is still leaving a warm glow across the NZ football landscape.

Where should young NZ footballers go to develop to their potential?

An overseas country where you have a passport, a culture similar to our own but with higher standards and better facilities (USA?), this is a great tough question to have - usually NZ players will go wherever they are wanted or can get a gig, and fair enough due to our pathways and isolation.

The one fly in the development ointment towards the 2026 WC and automatic entry from Oceania is how to get regular games and contact time for this U20 cycle? This cycle may suffer from its own success, with players being picked up by clubs all around the globe. How to get them back from the clubs when we need them and give them time to gel?

Can anyone think of a strategy that can be faxed to NZA, which outlines how to develop this cycle of players for the next 6 years into the best All Whites team yet?

Maybe the Wellington Phoenix has a big part to play in this?

From what I see its always going to be difficult for our national teams to sustain the culture by using average overseas based pro players as for most national teams those players are the ones playing for the best teams in the world.

Unless our national league environment and teams can improve to another level I still think we're 1 or 2 pro clubs short in NZ of being able to develop more professional players and to get our kiwi pro players playing together at a higher level more frequently. Now the A-league is independant Auckland should be the next logical place to establish a new pro club.

https://www.nzsportswire.com/2020/08/04/another-coach-steps-down-from-nz-football-role/

“While we are disappointed we won’t have Tony in the U-20s role moving forward, we are delighted for him and pleased to have his expertise staying in the Oceania region. He may not be working for NZF anymore but we will continue to work closely together.

“With All Whites Head Coach Danny Hay, and U-17s head coach Martin Bullock, Tony has worked to establish a clear alignment in culture and playing philosophy through the men’s national teams.

“Tony may be moving on but the pathways he has helped establish will continue to benefit future players.” said Boyens.

Wow more of a send-off/acknowledgement from NZF then what Des got and Tony had only been in the job about 4 months and hadn’t overseen one game.
