Ridenton perhaps working on some senior NZ team stuff?

Boyd and Thomas are too old correct (albeit by a week or so)?

Good result, can't remember the last time we beat an Island side so convincingly. Perhaps having the u20 team is now paying dividends.

Good news. In come the overseas-based players. Now we'll get a better picture of what the Under-20's of 2015 might look like.

And hey! We've got our hands on the Cup already! (see www.stuff.co.nz latest) courtesy of Wynton at Waitangi.

One team we won't be facing next year - and neither will anyone else - is Gambia. Following admission that their Under-20 team fielded 5 over-age players in last year's African Nations comp, they've been excluded from internationals at all levels for the next 2 years.

'Junior All Whites coach Darren Bazeley has cast his selection net wide in naming 28 players for three U-20 internationals against Fiji and Papua New Guinea in Auckland from this Sunday'

This may have been true for 17's. But from what I hear Bazeley and NZ Football have had blinkers on since then. They have not considered looking at any players other than those chosen for 17's or Aucklanders who are under there noses!!!.

What about the players who were the nearly but not quite there for 17's from around the rest of the country.Have they even bothered looking at them, to see where they are at development wise. A lot of development happens in these years. I have seen some players who have grown and developed allot in this time, and some others who have stagnated at the level they were at in 17's.

It's seems like it was a closed book on the 20's team as soon as the 17's were named.

Same it has been forever and  a day. 1 Jan of the relevant year, so for 2015 U20WC must be born on or after 1 Jan 1995.

Still no announcement by NZ Football about our u-20's taking part in this tournament - despite a Chinese FA media release May 4 which has NZ participating. What gives? The fax at NZF away being serviced?
Some foreign clubs have announced they are releasing NZ players for the tournament e.g. Vicenza in Italy posted on their website April 11 they are releasing Jesse Edge for the China tournament.

The Panda tournament. I agree with big Pete. Quite odd that BP and an Italian Serie b reserve grade team and the Chinese FA announce this before NZF. What on earth is Andy doing? Then again it could be a calculated plan to feed the media a new news story after the Fiji games.

Good news - confirmed to me tonight on "FIFA u-20 World Cup NZ 2015" Facebook that NZ are definitely taking part:

FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015 Hey. We were waiting till after the last game tomorrow in NZ before promoting it. But thanks!!!

Wow!!! That's going to be some opposition - Brazil, Croatia and China!!!

These Junior All Whites are going to be so well-prepared for the Finals next year - our best-prepared youth team ever. Previously our best-prepared would have been the 1999 NZ u-17 team when we hosted the Finals, who started their preparation the year before by touring Europe with Wynton Rufer and then had a "mini World Cup" build-up tournament in Christchurch after that also in 1998 against USA, South Africa, Tahiti and the Solomons.

Despite winning the OFC qualifying tournament a few years back Tahiti have not put a team together for the U20's since?. Does anyone know why (Or care?). Seems strange since NZ wont be there and they have had a lot of exposure since then (Confed Cup + Beach football WC) that there failure to put out a team is bizarre.

That's a good observation - especially when you consider even the weakest football country in Oceania, American Samoa, population 55,000, are competing in the qualifiers taking place in a few weeks in Fiji.

The problem could lie in players and management not selling enough chickens on the street to finance travel:

I always thought Tahiti received a lot of financial input from France into its economy and so are one of the wealthier Pacific islands. According to Wiki, France donates US$150 million a year under a new agreement from the beginning of 2006. That's the equivalent of US $1000 given to every Tahitian. Imports are subsidized too.

However, it seems little French financial assistance goes to Tahitian football and what little money is available is often squandered by corruption / incompetence.

An article last year in leading French paper "Le Monde" revealed national u-20 players and their families had to sell chickens on the street to finance their travel to the 2009 u-20 World Cup in Egypt:

Interview with former Tahiti senior and u-20 manager Lionel Charbonnier:

http://translate.google.co.nz/translate?hl=en&sl=fr&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lemonde.fr%2Fsport%2Farticle%2F2013%2F06%2F22%2Ffootball-a-tahiti-on-vendait-des-poulets-pour-financer-les-deplacements-de-la-selection_3434967_3242.html

"FOOTBALL: IN TAHITI THEY SOLD CHICKENS TO FINANCE THE NATIONAL TEAM'S TRAVEL"

Le Monde.fr | 22/06/2013 at 6:52 p.m. • Updated 22/06/2013 at 7:08 p.m. |Interview with Adrien Pécout

For these cash flow issues, you did not have the support of your president, the inescapable Temarii ?

"We were incompatibile and it was not going too well. Everyone knows what happened to him a few months later [in 2010, FIFA suspended him for suspected corruption in the vote for the host country of 2018 World Cup]. I remember when we had qualified for the FIFA 2009 World Cup Under 20 years, he stopped paying my technical staff. To finance part of the trip, he then made the players and the staff, including my wife and children,  to go cook and sell chickens in the street ...."

Chickens?

"There is a tradition, often when an association or club need money to take the plane. The ticket price is very expensive. If I remember correctly, a roundtrip to the metropolis is 1 500 euros minimum in low season. So the families concerned  work at night to cook chicken, and in the morning, everyone went door to door to sell his chickens everywhere. To help out, some buyers sometimes pay ten times more than the regular price. This extraordinary Tahitian solidarity has allowed us to bring a lot of money."

Maybe NZ U17 kids can sell chickens to help fund there trips to the WC (Fred de Jong take note).

As for Tahiti's U20 maybe they ran out of chickens, A trip to Fiji to qlfy then to NZ (If they won) wouldn't cost as many chickens as there 2009 trip did.

Someone was compiling a list of U20 World Cup possibles. Can't remember if he was mentioned of not, but probably should add Nick Delmoro. Has just signed with Spanish 2nd div Hercules.

He's definitely been playing his way into contention you'd think - Nick, a midfielder, scored the other day to earn his Hercules youth side promotion to Spain's top youth league for next season where they'll play the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
He turned 19 on May 5 so should be eligible for NZ u-20? Born in Italy but grew up in Auckland and a NZ citizen.
Played previously in Italy for Serie B clubs Chievo and Ascoli youth / reserve sides when only 16 - 18 in seasons 2011-12, 2012-13:
"Congratulations to former Wynrs Player Nick Delmoro for getting promoted to the Lega Honor which is the top league for their age group. Real Madrid, Barcelona and a few others are in this league. It came down to the last game which was last Sunday. Nick was a starting member and his team had to win to get promoted to the Lega Honor..

Nick scored in the 3rd minute to make it 1-0. They ended up winning 2-1. Best part, Nick scored with weaker foot right outside the box. Which helped his team get promoted to the Lega Honor."

Strong looking squad of 16. Great to see Tuiloma named as a midfielder. Anyone know of any coverage here for this? NZ friendly viewing times.

Wow that's a lot of overseas players! ..sign of the times huh? Very strong looking squad. Five defenders might mean Bill Tuiloma features at the back though..

BRAZIL U-20 SQUAD:

Naturally looks pretty awesome - I guess they'll take the same team to China to play our Junior All Whites, Croatia and China in the Panda Cup next month. China will be pretty busy too.

Brazil squad for the Toulon Tournament includes (on top of their Brazil-based talent) the European-based trio:

https://www.festival-foot-espoirs.com/festival-foot-espoirs/list-festival-foot.php?ID_nation=2

Lucas Domingues Piazon Lucas Piazon 20.01.1994 Chelsea (Eng)
Marcos Correa Aoas Marquinhos 14/05/1994 SG Paris (France)

Douglas dos Santos Justino de Melo DOUGLAS SANTOS 03/22/1994 Udinese (Ita)

CHINA:

But a big surprise for me, is the number of European-based players in the China squad. If they're any good, they'll be a tough opponent in the China tournament. Man, they have a guy at Atletico Madrid! And five in Portugal! Plus one at Club Bruges.

China u-20 Squad at the Toulon Tournament (probably the same will face NZ in June):

Overseas-based players:

XU Xin 19.04.1994 Atletico Madrid (Esp)

Did anybody get along to Shepherds Park to watch the U20's play a Birko selection. Just interested to see what anyone thought now the overseas players are back.
