How many from the South?

The playing of a youth team in the  senior National league has certainly given the Phoenix youngsters the chance to shine and get profile. The majority of Auckland players cant get into the teams up here so they get less opportunity to do same. The number of Ole players is interesting, as watching the BIrko game the other night some of them looked less at home in my opinion and having watched the Auckland scene, some up here were more deserving who were left out , granted only based on one half of a game's observation, but still stood out to me.

They beat Birko, in a game of one team one half one team the other.

First vs Birko starters was tight. Second was more U-20 dominant.

None of those three currently reside in the south, but are from there, which is the key.

I think they will play McGarry in the backline to accommodate  Singh, otherwise, he may be dropped and you will see McGarry go central to add some physicality to the middle of the park.

I'm not sure who will partner Hunter as first choice CB.

Overall, a fairly strong side with some nice technical players with a little bit of speed.

Maybe this?

Sinclair, Lewis, Dyer, Cameron, McGarry

Rogerson, Bevan

Not sure who they go with on the wide CBS, the WBs, the non-Lewis MFs and the second striker. Plenty of combinations.

Edit: @Patrick - you bet he is, but they'll be going for a balance. I think Joe Bell plays as a DM.

"The New Zealand U-20s depart for China Tuesday May 9 where they will have an eight day training camp. They play games against the Mexico U-20s on 13 May and a local Chinese club side on 16 May before heading to Korea on 18 May."

At least they have a week's decent build-up in China and play two games pre-tournament.

All the games in the FIFA u-20 World Cup are on Sky TV this time.

A first for a youth World Cup held outside of NZ.

Previously we only got NZ's games and the later rounds.

Will be good to be able to see the other games in NZ's group and some of the big teams like Argentina and Germany etc.

Monaco star Mbappe has been left out of France's squad at the request of senior coach Deschamps who wants him for a friendly June 2 and World Cup qualifiers in June.

Plus Monaco want him for their final games of the season which clash with the u-20 tournament.

http://www.espnfc.com/france/story/3122474/kylian-...

A shame that one of the best young players in the world will be absent now.

He's been sensational in the Champions League semi-finals.

FIFA's scheduling of the tournament is crap - they could have avoided holding it while some European leagues are still running plus Cup Finals are on etc.

Other French star players excluded:

"Marseille's teenage midfielder Maxime Lopez was also left out of the U20 squad after his club requested he be allowed to help them finish in the top five in Ligue 1 and qualify for next season's Europa League.

Spanish side Alaves, meanwhile, retained Theo Hernandez so he can play in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona on May 27.

Hernandez, on loan at Alaves from Atletico Madrid, has attracted interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona, with his agent confirming enquiries have been made by both clubs.

"The clubs were within their rights, the stakes are significant," Batelli said. "We didn't want to force it through, even if we tried to press. The players will be the most disappointed of all."

Lyon midfielder Lucas Tousart was included despite his club still having the chance to reach the Europa League final on May 24.

"For Tousart, I take a risk. We'll leave with 20 of us if Lyon qualifies for the Europa League final," Batelli said.

Its our only warm up game, bar for a local club side...

Incredibly poor on NZF part - the team is under prepared - thus we need a good result here, more for morale and belief than anything. If we find ourselves well behind the 8 ball there is not enough time to realistically do anything about it.

Sure, but it doesn't need any sort of coverage. The buildup is what it is, they couldn't get the foreign half of the squad in until last week anyway, so not much more they could do.

How is it other countries facing similar challenges managed proper build ups? I was surprised that the core group from NZ , and there were a number did nothing since the hastily called January camp . Seems pure laziness in managing it for me , and there was the coach spending weeks with the All Whites instead . Where are his priorities ? He has selected boys he has not seen all year , a number who have been sick or injured for months . Let's hope the talent of the top 11 see us through , despite these handicaps!

I would not think those 2 matches last week with multiple teams playing various combinations of halves would count as build up ? It was more a selection scenario as squad was 30 . From what I saw , it was not ideal

Week mostly about time in the system and coach checking on fitness. Game I saw was one XI then another XI half and half. Part of it, but not all of it - that's what these two games are for in China. How many games do you need?

Effectively with our actual squad we only have two games as the overseas players have just come in... this is very poor... even Vanuatu has organised more friendlies.

Nothing beasts game time and with many of our players having finished their season, this can not be replicated in training, nor can real chemistry be developed between cones.

Please name me one professional club or other "respected" national team that would operate under a similar philosophy. It just wouldn't happen. This is a major tournament, NZF should treat it as such.

We can afford to send an additional 10 people to Russia at our own body's expense, but not arrange another meaningful friendly. Guaranteed everyone going to Russia won't be slumming it!

I want our team to be successful, but when a nation with the resources of Vanuatu out does you... your in trouble. We might still perform well and win a couple of games, but it will still leave me asking what if!

The National Team of Mexico U-20 closed Saturday afternoon their series of preparation matches in Chinese territory, prior to the start of the World Cup of the category to be played in the Republic of Korea, with a victory, by defeating By two goals to zero to his New Zealand counterpart in Weifang.

The entries were made by Paolo Yrizar at 15 minutes and Diego Aguilar at 90 '+ 1'.

The Tricolor team will travel to Daejeon, South Korea, which will host the first two matches at the U-20 World Cup.

The match

The start of the match felt different from the other two matches, on the field of play were two squads that will participate in the World Cup of the category and there was equality of circumstances. Mexico from the first moment took the initiative, pressed, drowned the opponent and when he had the ball tried to offend, a New Zealand that also started very strongly the commitment.

It only took 15 minutes for the Aztecs to open the scoring. Pablo López received the ball on the left, he settled and took service to the area where Paolo Yrizar sweeping away the ball to send it to the bottom of the New Zealand hut. The greens were better than their rival.

The second green goal was nothing to fall at 23 ', those led by Marco Antonio Ruiz made a great triangulation that culminated with a shot by Alan Cervantes that forced to use in depth the goalkeeper to keep the ball.

New Zealand was beginning to put more pressure on the Mexican team, making the match sharper than it was. Mexico, despite having the advantage, yielded the ball a little and no longer came with danger to the frame of the Oceania.

The first 45 minutes went away with the Mexican team trying to play and New Zealand looking to destroy everything based on malicious fouls and tickets.

The second half began in the same way that finished the first, with the Tricolor trying to generate soccer and the All Whites kicking all over the field. The score remained favorable to the Aztecs for the smallest difference.

Mexico again was close to 57 '. The one of pieces fell to Kevin Magana in the area, the 11 green controlled and took a left-footed shot that Hunter Asworth cleared the goal line to the corner.

New Zealand came close to the tie at 75 '. Francisco Venegas sent a free kick in high over the penalty box. The ball is played by Abraham Romero with a great throw miss from many defenders in the penalty area.

When it looked like the game would end with a win for Mexico for the slightest difference, Diego Aguilar got the ball in a corner kick out of the New Zealand area at 90 '+ 1', slipped it into his left leg and shot impossible For the goalkeeper of New Zealand, thus obtaining the second both Mexican.

There was no time for more.

So we basically kicked lumps out of them and as soon as we had the ball pummelled it over the park. That doesn't sound like us at all.

I am about three weeks late, but what happened to those overseas players who were at the OFC Nations Cup pre-squad:

Patrick Izzet - Vancouver Whitecaps

Andres Greensmith - Some Mexican team

Were they just not good enough?
