Was nominated for a defender of the week a week or so ago in his Big West Conference, after serving a ban for 5 yellows. Hs managed a few goals too. The way they uses stats for everything there is mind boggling, so not sure how that translates into quality on the field.

Wow Andrew. Some names for me to find out more about. Cheers. ?
Tournament age grade teams are always interesting constructions. Form vs potential. Building for the future vs tournament results. Do NZF have a formula? Professionals first draft; handa prems then lower grades. How do US universities fit into that? Seeing players domestically vs trusting overseas reports. Injuries and club commitments. It sounds like a fun task.
Australia will take on Kiwis at Wollongong's WIN Stadium on Friday September 6 and then again at Campbelltown Stadium the following Monday.
The matches will be warm ups ahead of flying to Thailand in January for the 2020 AFC U23 Championship where the top three teams will host nation Japan as Asia’s representatives for Tokyo 2020.
New Zealand’s U23s will face a similar task in Fiji in September to participate in the 2019 OFC U23 Championship where the overall winner will earn Oceania’s spot in Tokyo 2020.
But the games will also see coach Graham Arnold relinquish control of the Olyroos for these games while he juggles World Cup qualifying for the Socceroos.
Assistant coach Gary Van Egmond has been given temporary control of the Olyroos for the two friendlies to allow Arnold to focus on the road to Qatar 2022.
However Arnold will retake the reins for the tournament in Thailand in January, said the FFA today.
“We are pleased with how this structure will work over the next six months,” Arnold added.
"With Gary working with the Young Socceroos as well as the under-23s, and myself, Rene Meulensteen and Tony Vidmar focusing on the Socceroos but keeping a close eye on the U23s, the fluid communication and pathway between the squads will be maintained.
“The boys did a great job in Cambodia in March to qualify for the 2020 AFC U23 Championship.
“Now it’s important that we get them together regularly in the lead up to January so that they are as prepared as possible to achieve the target of earning a place at the Olympics."
FFA CEO David Gallop added: “We are delighted to have been able to schedule two international friendlies for our under 23s on home soil ahead of the 2020 AFC U23 Championship.
“These fixtures, combined with further games and camps later in 2019, will help set the platform for the team’s bid to qualify for Tokyo.
“Importantly, the fixtures will also provide supporters in Wollongong and Campbelltown with the chance to watch some of Australia’s brightest young footballers on their doorstep.”
So Sept 6th and then Sept 9th for Ollyroos v Ollywhites

Would have liked to have had a game here and a game there... case of little fish just happy to be invited?
Are these games scheduled for international breaks?

Don't think so, Bayern II have had a real rocky start to life in the 3. Liga so they'll want him

Really it's a bit pointless bring any U23 players based in Europe, back to play the Olyroos.
These 2 games are warm ups for the Olympic qualifying tourney in PNG. That tourney is not in a FIFA window.
Maybe some players in Euro youth setups, or out on loan etc (Mata, Oli Whyte, Ellis-Reid, Just, Wilkins the Torslanda crowd) - could be released for PNG, but Singh certainly won't be. So pointless bringing the likes of him, Woud etc all the way back to Australia, when he won't be in PNG a few weeks later. Very much doubt Bayern would be happy about it either.
Buckingham must be scrambling around making ph calls, trying to work out who he can call up, as much as any coaching planning.
Good news is that the very much U23 'B' team he took to Samoa, proved the big names may not be needed.
Looks as a Miya selected squad as so many ex Onehunga players and players who tried overseas
Squad looking good for the upcoming Aussie games. Obviously no Nix boys or Singh.

Surprised that likes of Woud, McGarry and Lewis have been picked. These Olyroos games from memory fall in a FIFA window (games Sept 6th & Sept 9th), when for Woud & McGarry - Willem II will be inactive. However the later Olympic qualifying tourney in Fiji falls outside of a FIFA window.
What's the point of bringing them down under, if their club is unlikely to later release them for the Olympic qualifying tourney.
Even more surprised Scun-thorpe have agreed to release Lewis. They have a League Two game Sept 8th. League Two doesn't stop for windows. Lewis is also still on the injured list.
I think El Grap pointed out clubs don't need to release players for international U23 football, even in FIFA windows.
So some of the domestic guys who went to Samoa, get dropped for these plum Olyroos games, but then likely get invited back in again to go to Fiji. If that happens not sure how they may feel? 'You have little chance of being at the Olympics, when all our first choice, plus 3 over U23 players will be available, but we just need you for a couple of unfashionable tourneys in the Islands before we discard you again!'.
I guess the other narrative is, a chance to stand out, and make a name for oneself.
Not sure those kids in for Samoa and Fiji but out for Aus and Olympics can take it as anything but a chance to show what they have got. Fact is they are not shining as brightly as those that might go to the 'big' games, so they need to take what chances they can. Part and parcel of being a footballer. You want to be at the big games, do the work, make the sacrifices, be the best.
Besides, they still get to tell their grandkids they played for NZU23. And who says a couple of weeks in Samoa in July and Fiji for the tail end of winter is such an unfashionable place to be!
Some kids would just love to stick it to the Aussies I'm guessing
Will the two games vs Australia be televised? Can't remember what that black fern on a white top looks like anymore.

Are there age parameters for U23? Can u be 18 for instance?
Why is it is "obviously" no Nix players out of my ignorance?
I was going to say 'because pre-season' but realistically it's a month before season start, the Aus clubs will be releasing players (you assume) so probably not that.
Now thinking Des is assuming they won't be available for the qualifiers and wants as much of the squad he will take to the qualifiers together for this.

Anyone born Jan 1, 1997 or later is the pool for the Olympics. I know AFC gets funky with some of its age-group tournaments, going by ages at the time of them, rather than at the final world tournament they are leading up to, so Australia might play by different rules.
Its only Australia so I doubt Des is taking this game serious, that's why he is bring out a 3rd string team together for these matches.

Thanx.
If, yes if, we qualify for the Olympics through the tough Island conditions, I wonder if Cacace, Eliott and Waine will come into the mix? Being professional footballers they must have the edge on Northern Premiership players - even if those NPL players are older by 2-3 years.
McCowatt and Singh?
If we get through - what are peoples picks for the 3 overage players?
Is Woud better than Marinovic?
Reid (injuries considered), Thomas (Injuries considered), Wood for a solid spine?
If injuries are ok it will always be those three. Would make a great team

Also he (Talay) mentioned that while no Phoenix player has been included in the NZ Under-23 squad to play two games against Australia, they will be available for selection for the Olympic Games qualifiers, which are more important for NZF anyway.
Interview up where he explains a bit
Lachlan Brook replaces Piscopo (injury) in the Ollyroo squad.
how does Billingsley continue to get selected for these things??
thought might have been harsh so checked his stats... played as a defender last year!!
NZ squad named for OFC Olympic qualifiers:
https://www.nzfootball.co.nz/newsarticle/81493
Quite different to the squad currently in Oz to play the Olyroos.
"...includes four All Whites in Clayton Lewis, Myer Bevan, Liberato Cacace and Logan Rogerson.
There are eight members of the squad who represented New Zealand at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland, and 10 of the squad who won gold at the Pacific Games in Samoa.
...pleased to have four Wellington Phoenix reps – Cacace, Callum McCowatt, Ben Waine, and Callan Elliot – available for selection after some conversations with the A-League side."
Out go the Europe-based Woud, Wilkins, Stanger, McGarry, Mata and Just.
Also locally-based Jordan Spain (Cashmere Technical) is omitted.
