Is a higher chance that Stensness has been and will be playing as a midfielder, so 2 CBs.

Though I could see the team having a nervous, cautious, compact start against Korea (likely strongest pool opponents). That wouldn't be unexpected. Last thing they would want is to be too loose and be down 2-0 after 20 minutes. Can see them growing into the game, type of first match.

If Stanger was a serious chance of starting he would have got a lot more mins in the 2 warmups against Olyroos.

On evidence to date it would be a major surprise if Hay started with 5 at the back.

Oh shoot I thought you meant we only have 2 CBs in the squad. You're right that we'll likely play 4 at the back though, I think it's the best way for our team to play.

does nobody remember the 5-1-2-1-2 Nix being one of the most exciting teams in the league and putting 8 past CCM under Rudan?

I'd be more tentative about employing a similar formation under Hay purely because I think none of our RBs offer enough quality. Libby is picture-perfect for the role, so I wouldn't be worried about a completely dead attack if Hay for some reason does choose to play three at the back

Callan Elliot's best role is RWB in my opinion, and I don't know how much better DIngham actually is than him - Elliot set the A-League on fire at the end of last year, but didn't have time to sustain it, and we have no idea how his development has gone in Greece, where DIngham seems an established yet middling A-League player.

If we do switch to a back 3 for whatever reason I think Elliot and Cacace would be my wingbacks. McGarry probably unlucky he's behind the best NZ leftback in living memory (sorry Tony).

I guess it depends how it is played, though it appears to me that fixing 3 at the back, rather than 2, always means you have one less player further up the pitch, potentially attacking.

Well it depends how you employ the fullbacks too. If you play 3 at the back with two attack minded wingbacks then you can have 7 players attacking with 3 + keeper on defence. If you play with 2 CB's then the fullbacks may be employed in more defensive roles, meaning you've only got 6 players attacking. Kind of all depends on tactics though rather than formation. If you've got a Declan Rice style player like Stensness starting at 6 then he can slot into a CB position when the fullbacks attack, and settle back into DM when the fullbacks are in position. Gives you a fluid system where you can play 4 and 5 at the back depending on how you approach the game.

Inghams touch let him down at times, but he was busy/energetic and looked to pass and keep the ball. Certainly was not our worst last night.

Cacace was unusually off, and lacking luck, how many diagonal switches did we hit just too far in front of him.

I trust that Hay knows the personnel best. Calling for Ingham to be replaced by a guy that (presumably) has not been watched/assessed by any of us since he did very well a long time ago at a much lower level (the A-league) is most likely a case of the devil we don't know.

Besides, the person that I am most worried about is Stensness. Absolutely fine on the ball, but does not have the defensive 'wall' properties that Ried and Pijnaker have. Obviously, he's a DM filling in for Boxall.

The team will get better the longer they are together, as New Zealand teams always do.

Without being negative, enjoy these Oly Whites (virtual AWs) as much as you can. If AWs don’t qualify for Qatar next year (which will be tough unless  a Bahrain falls into their lap), you won’t likely see this group together again for meaningful quality competitive games until WC 2026!!, which would be a crime.

Most of them will be over the age 23 cutoff for Paris 2024, and I’m discounting OFC qualifiers of any description to be qualify competitive fixtures.

If AWs fail to make Qatar, NZF need to try everything to setup some sort of OFC/AFC League of Nations, and/or WC qualifying path. Be a huge missed opportunity to see this talented male group virtually dormant for 4 years.

think Pijnaker's solidified himself as at least a rotational option at Rio Ave following their relegation - he impressed the hell out of me last night.

Cacace raising his stock as per usual, Stensness with some very nice touches (though he'll need another season in the A-League).

Michael Woud started nervous, as he's prone to doing, but made some excellent saves and exhibited a lot of bravery - he only signed for Almere in January, but wouldn't be surprised if Eredivisie clubs were sniffing around (Groningen was keen recently).

Dingham might have attracted a decent offer from the Queen St Maccas - his improvement this A-League season was a pleasant surprise, but he was woeful last night.

Reid and Wood seriously good athletes who have competed at the top level for a long time, but also the team under them are all playing regularly in professional environments and many have not been overawed.
I’m a football fan who has become used to NZ teams winning and having expectations of our players! Imagine if we had Singh and Boxall too. We would have bossed that game.

Stensness would have raised a few eyebrows IMO. Playing out of position he looked very comfortable. Strong and decent with the ball at this feet, I can imagine him getting a closer look.

Lewis as well, if he can show more attacking quality (assuming we are more dominant) he should get some interest too.

Just should, but was poor. He will be looking for improved performances as he is better than the league he is in.

Pjanker was solid too, but with no real senior minutes, I think its less likely he will get looked at.

Reid was a real leader and put in a super shift, but even he had two terrible touches at the start of the game. Nerves? The pitch looked very quick, maybe they hadn't played on a surface like that?
