New Zealand Football: NZF Announces Awards Finalists

May 25, 2010

AUCKLAND New Zealand Football is pleased to announce the finalists for the 2010 NZF Awards to be held in Auckland this Friday.

The winners will be announced at an invitation-only evening function at the Maritime Museum, Auckland on Friday 27 May and will also incorporate the New Zealand Soccer Media Awards and the Oceania Football Confederation Player of the Year (men and women) awards for 2010.

The event will be attended by Australasian-based All Whites, who are currently in a domestic camp ahead of internationals against Mexico and Australia, and the Football Ferns who are gearing up for next months FIFA Womens World Cup.

The time period covered by the 2010 NZF Awards is from January to December 2010 with the exception of ASB Premiership and ASB Womens League awards which relate to the 2010-11 season.

As expected, performances at the 2010 FIFA World Cup are heavily represented not just in the Coach, Team and Mens Player of the Year categories but also in nominations for Young Mens Player, Referee and Assistant Referee of the Year.

A notable exception among the Nike Young Mens Player of the Year finalists is Kosta Barbarouses, who missed out on World Cup selection but struck 11 goals for Brisbane Roar in the A-league before the New Year, and now goes head to head with World Cup All Whites Chris Wood and Tommy Smith in an exceptionally strong field for the U-20 category.

Ryan Nelsen, Winston Reid and Mark Paston are the finalists for the Nike Mens Player of the Year award while Amber Hearns 13 goals in 16 internationals in 2010 earn her a nomination for Nike Womens Player of the Year alongside German-based professional Rebecca Smith and WPS Rookie of the Year Ali Riley.

I just hope that ASB Premiership Player of the Year goes to a good, honest Kiwi.

It should just go to the player who has been player of the year, whether they are kiwi or not

I really hope that some Yellow Fever are invited, and one of them drunkingly goes on stage thinking that they have won an award they were not even nominated for, a la Brandon Block at the Brits.
[QUOTE]
Dance DJ Brandon Block was told by his friends that he had won an award and had been summoned to the stage to collect it. Because of his advanced state of intoxication he believed them and walked on to the stage, eventually ending up next to a bemused Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood and actress Thora Birch, who were about to present the award for Best Soundtrack Album. After Block was removed from the stage by security, Wood aimed an insult in his direction, at which Block broke free to square up to the guitarist. A series of insults were then traded between the two, both of which were audible through the stage microphone, causing claims that the whole event may have been staged. Wood then threw his drink into Block's face, and the DJ was ejected from the event. Some time after the incident, Block claimed that he had subsequently apologised to Wood for his behaviour, and Wood had merely brushed it off.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

I see results of last year's came out in May 2012. So what happened that meant we didn't have it at the same time this year? It seems like everything is about to begin again football-wise, so would be an odd time to name the best player of last year (as opposed to a month ago). Does NZ Football not have enough money to put it on? Guess it would've gone the way of Winston Reid.
