      Media Statement

Govt to give $300K boost to All Whites campaign - PM

The Government is giving the All Whites FIFA World Cup finals campaign a $300,000 boost, Prime Minister John Key announced today.

The cash injection will help New Zealand Football capitalise on the All Whites second-ever trip to the finals, and assist in the promotion of football domestically.

ï¿½The FIFA World Cup finals are a massive event, says Mr Key.

The All Whites campaign provides a tremendous opportunity to ramp up interest and enthusiasm for football here, while also promoting New Zealand on a huge world stage.

The Governments funding will also help New Zealand Football identify talented 17- and 18-year-olds and train them in coaching and leadership skills. They will then help run a series of football festival days through clubs and schools to promote football to young Kiwis.

Mr Key says New Zealand Football will be able to use some of the funding to hire a temporary media manager to help the team cope with the massive worldwide media interest in the FIFA World Cup.

In addition, New Zealand Footballs website will be revamped to become the All Whites homepage, ensuring all New Zealanders will be able to receive the latest news on the team's South African campaign, says Mr Key.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I'm assuming from this email that NZF don't have a full time media liaison officer (or a media department) at their headquaters?

FFA has a gent called Rod Allen heading up its media dept with a few staff under him.

Sounds very much like the NZ Govt may want NZF to appoint a media officer for a 3 or 6 month contract this year. Someone should call the federation, as there may be a job there.

Jamie scott has been NZF comms mgr and taken care of media for NZF last couple of years. so, unless Jamie has left, this is additional resource.

BTW, what a waste of public money (albeit trivial). God knows how much will be wasted funding media for the RWC .

And wait for Murray McCully and John Key to show up in SOuth Africa now.

Same here, but If the government really has to involuntarily spend my money then I would prefer it goes to football over rugby.

Well, the football ferns got 265K from SPARC for their 2010 elite funding. The canoeists got 800K and mens basketball 350K. Not on the link, but rugby league is has secured 1M a year for three years on the back of a yet to be completed restructure and a 'world cup' win, albeit a significant win in context.

If they can chuck hundreds of millions at the rugby nightmare then surely FIFA 2010 is worth some funding?

I guess it's a sign of the progress football has made in this country that politicians now feel the need to pander to supporters by wasting taxpayer money on it (although it's just a drop in the ocean compared to rugby)

Did you watch Lazio play Livorno in Serie A and think "we need some of that here"?

actually given it some thought and a some bandwagonning support, if a tad self serving,  is a lot better than what Winston Peters was pushing against Fiji.

300k is not much especially if it has to be spent on the website (should just linik straight to Gourdie! and save $$$). Not sure how it is going to be spent on development of players either.

but hey- if a popular and winning team means the politicians get into it and give it a bit of public backing.

Still would be nice if they could make sure PE wasn't getting cut at primary schools. Having cut Push Play too. Be good if this are was  ongoing support and backed up. Starting at 17 and 18 isn't going to work. Smith, Reid, Costa, Cameron Duncan and the rest are already on contract by then...

saw this really craxy cultural thing in Kaukapakapa the other day- football goals with rugby posts clipped on to the top at their primary school. Wonder how many of those there are across the coutnry??
