This is the game to see if the boys are champs or chumps.

Gambia are a good side and it is a huge ask.

As long as we hold our own, get a few good chances and don't get thumped. I will be happy.

I am looking forward to the game; only 90 mins away now.

If we build it, they will come...

Yes the way that they (Gambia) all flow forward on attack in that true African style means our lads will have to be on their toes and more.  Good concentration on defence and no Brockie shots skyed over the cross bar will be good.  When we get a ggod chance to score at this level our strikers simply have to make it count!

Under an hour to go now. I have to be content with internet updates as I have braved a freezing Wellington southerly this morning and come to work! Rather be at home to watch the match on Sky.

Go to fifa.com

Then click on Canada 2007, you should find the video live link in there. I run the match cast as well. as the live stream was crap for me last time.

1-0 to Gambia, 44 mins gone.

Peverley was subbed off for Draper after the goal (20 mins).

Pssession has gone from 70-30% in favour of Gambia to 56-44% in favour of Gambia.

Half time.

NZ have half a chance here. We are playing better now Stu is finally realised 2 upfront is better than one.

We do look like the ball is water logged when we have possession. It seems a bit lighter when the Gambians have it.

Gambia have had a few good efforts, great to see us having the odd attack chance as well.

Lets get back in this

To any one watching the game on TV - has Draper impressed since he came on? It seems the possession has turned markedly since the substitution.

Is Henderson in the midfield ?   13 shots to 5 tells the story. Playing only 1 up front Stu must have forgotten we have to win this game Still at 1-0 down there is still a chance

70 mins still 1-0  NZ playing like a team that's 1-0 up no urgency or commitment. A lot of yellow cards also

What's the word on Draper folks? He certainly seems quite influential? ? Does he have a club contract?

Canterbury United.

He wasn't even pasrt of the qualifying squad or involved last year (from memory).  Called up late to the surprise of many but he's showing he deserved it.  I think he's pretty young as well.

How's my driving? - Whine here

Cheers HN. I'm sure Ricky has an eye on this kid. He got loads of good comments after the Portugal game (even though subbed on late) and seems to have performed well today . ..

FT: 1-0 loss. Shame but a respectable result.

Boxall was solid.

Draper added some energy.

Henderson played well for me. Great ball across to Brockie to f&ck it up again.

Brockie better not get signed by the phoenix, he is a nothing player.

How many times did we get in position for a cross. Then broke the cardinal rule. YOu must get it past the first defender. I think Roydhouse was guilty on many occassions of wasting decent crosses.

the better team won tonight. We had our chances. But the better team won.

Disappointing performance to be honest. We were tactically naive, very slow on the counter attack and very poor in our decision making i.e. going for the long ball all the time  when the Gambians had it all over us in the air and were stronger. the defence played ok but the midfield were not up to it especially in decision making and skill level.

I think our overall fitness was not up to it i.e. for big players our strength on the ball is poor, players were getting pushed off all the time and no real speed anywhere on the park.

The good thing will be that the players and the coaching staff now know what they need to do to step up an perform at this level.

Draper looked good when he came on and obviously Spoonly is the standout in the team. I think we have a lot to work on before the team can become competitive at this level but the more experience they get the better I think.

Unlucky today, played better than we did against Portugal for sure.

Spoonley was solid in goal once again and Draper played well, but i don't feel anyone really stood out for us this time i feel it was more of an improved overall effort from the lads.

Good to see we had more possession in the end and created some fine chances. I'd like to see Draper start ahead of Brockie against Mexico i think he fully deserves it.

In the end, another good learning experience for the lads.

Three for me, and two for them.

If we had Chris James playing things might have been different.

Brockie came so close to scoring from a cross from Henderson (I think it was Henderson) but the keeper was too close to him - Brockie can't be blamed for that miss.

I was getting quite frustrated with the Gambian players getting injured left, right, and centre to waste time, but lots of teams do that, and if NZ were winning they would probably time waste too.

Draper v Brockie seems to be a recurring thread. Personally, from what I've seen, I'd take Draper.

I dnt thind Brockie has been taht bad... Draper though has been better and hes only 17 i think.

Spoons good, but again our midfield gave away too much ball, stu seems to be afraid of leeting the boys actually play and wants direct football.

0-2 Portugal, 0-1 Gambia, 0-? Mexico.

Creditable losses aren't too bad, but if there is one lesson to draw from this, it is that from a footballing perspective we'd be better off giving up WCs for Asia IMHO.

Indeed. I'd rather we played regularly in Asia, than irregularly and getting beaten at Wrld Cups every 4 years or so. . .

Draper was impressive, but I thought Brockie was ok. I can understand the criticism but he looked comfortable playing at this level (excpet for the glaring fact he can't score goals)

Definite overall improvement by all.

Solid performance, Brockie should have been sent off though, he made a shocking tackle and only got a yellow and earlier shoved a player towards the advertising hordings which could have been a yellow. I hope he isn't signed by the Phoenix.
