I am looking forward to following the NZ u20's , u 17's and Womans World Cups this year.
It is a great opportunity for NZ football. Also mixed in with the launch of the Phoenix  season and the activities of the All white games, plus with the likes of Nelsen playing in the Premiership. This has to be one of the biggest years for NZ soccer since 1982 as far as exposure goes and interest for us fans.

Think of all those youth players playing on the world cup stage. Got to be something there for the future.

I am wondering if Costa could have been included in both u20's and u17 teams? I think the U20's world cup is first. It would be great exposure for him to play in both. Or maybe you are not allowed to?

My feeling is the u17's team are going to be in a better position to play well in the world cup than the u20's. The u17's are getting an amazing buildup. I think they are playing in an 8 team tournement in June with some top teams.

I hope the talent scouts are able to pick up some of these NZ players for overseas team trials or the like.

The NZ Womans team are playing in the world cup in September this year too. All the best to them as well. They have drawn brazil in their pool as have the U17's.

I have heard the u20's have been playing a few local teams around NZ. I am not sure if this is the best build up. We have been given huge chances with Australia joining the Asia Confederation. I just hope we don't take it for granted. It is not going to last for every. Especially if we don't perform at this level. FIFA will probably give us half a place for the youth teams as well. So we would have to beat the 5th place Sth American teams to qualify and not just beat Tongo and the like.

I wish the govenment got behind soccer a bit more as well. I know Helen Clark has given support in the past which is great. We need more though to promote soccer throughout NZ.

Our population is big enough to hold our own in World Football. Wales only has over 2 million people. We just need to build up interest and also get a good following of supporters that can support our domestic game. The best win for us at the current moment is when teams can get financial support from local businesses and $$$ from wealthy business people. If we can get decent players from the islands into our leagues as has been happening, it is great to increase the quality and interest.

All the best to youth teams and womans team in their respective World Cups.

Good topic, I hope the women's team do really well over in China. I will also be behind the other two teams at their world cups.

Re. the womens world cup - some of the build up games for the NZ womens soccer team coming up in Auckland look to be good value too.

NZ Women play the top USA college (University of North Carolina) side Sunday 27th May @ Bill McKinley Park in Mt Wellington.  Kick-off is at 3:30pm.

Then they play the Canadian side twice.  Canada are ranked 10th in the world (NZ women are ranked 23rd).

The games against Canada are at North Harbour Stadium on Sun 3rd June at 3:30pm and on Wed 6th Jun at 7:30pm.
football tragic for too long

FIFA rules means that Costa can only play in one of the two WC's so i'd say he'll go to the U-20's rather than the U-17's.

Three for me, and two for them.

Actually U-17's would be better cause he would rip up the U-17's and get a chance to play U-20's in 2 years time.

I really don't see the Government giving football money. It just seems a ridiculous idea. They may support the womens U17 world cup here next year but I don't know to what degree. Perhaps if the Americas Cup dudes fail to win the stupid thing we will have cause to ask if it was money well spent. I'd say NZF could do a lot more things with 34 million dollars than a syndicate of rich men and it would benefit more people. I don't know anyone personally who will get some major benefit from winning the Americas Cup.
It should be noted too that OFC has been lobbying the government for money or else tax exemptions. OFC could be heading to Tahiti in the next 4 years to base its HQ there. That would be a sad thing for NZ as the confederation pumps a lot of pingers into the economy here.

I just bought my tickets to Canada/Congo and NZ/Mexico on July 8 in Edmonton (u20s). Me and some buddies are gonna make a little road trip of it as Edmonton's only a 3 hour drive from where we live. Of course we'll be wearing red and cheering our arses off for canada, but I'll be supporting NZ as well. Should be sweet!
