Any one else hear this on the news last nite.Apparently the NZFA want Herbert to be there when the draw is made on the 4th of December. We play Melbourne at home that day,as nice as it would be to have him there.Surely his club commitments should come first.

The DomPost says Terry S. is very unlikely to let Ricki go.

Yeah I saw that. The last thing NZF needs is a rift between the phoenix and NZF. They should back of a little bit tbh. And anyway does it really matter if he's there? Sens Turner and Van Hattum or something

We need a poll (I was about to start one).

To me it is a no-brainer - he should stay with the Phoenix at that critical stage of the season. I fail to see what major benefit is gained from having him watch a draw live.

I don't think Terry should let him go.

on radio sport on Sunday it seemed as though Terry was ok about him going - second thoughts perhaps

I'm not sure which way I want Terry to go - still too caught up in AW euphoria perhaps

Sending Herbert for little more than a PR opportunity makes zero sense.

Well i suppose that Ricki Herbert will be the only recognised face from NZF and the other national team coaches will be there so it would be the best time to nab a few options for matches.

I think that Jonathan Gould would able to lead the Phoenix team for the game against the Melbourne Victory for that weekend and that Ricki can organise training plans for that time.

What do you think assistant coaches are for? If a professional coach needs a small holiday for a while, then these type of arrangements do happen quite often, so the coach gets some personal time and the assistant coach gets some match day experience.

Agreed. I'm sure somebody else can go over there just fine and it won't achieve enough to make it worth a home defeat- which is a certainty without Sir Ricki!

Stand firm on this Terry.  We need Ricki to be concentrating on securing the play-off position not having a photo shoot with Sepp Blatter.

All Whites v Bahrain match.
At about the 80th minute Bahrain was given a free kick and we all went quiet, then everything happened so fast and Bahrain scored and my heart sank and then the commentators never said anything of why the goal was not allowed, nor did any newspaper report. Can someone please explain the rules covering that situation?

I actually agree - all the national team coaches of the teams that qualified will be there, it will be poor form if our coach is not there. We can't exactly afford to slight FIFA considering our position in the international game.

It wouldn't be the first time an assistant coach took care of the Phoenix for a game during the regular season, and doubt it would have disastrous consequences for our play-off campaign.

Surely it would be a nice touch for Brian Turner to go?

We need Ricki with the 'Nix against Melbourne.

Turner can go, but I think Ricky should be in Capetown too.el grapadura2009-11-17 12:56:48

It's not like we haven't trained/played without Ricki in the stands before. Most of the work coaching wise is done during the week anyway.

Let him go. Once in a lifetime kind of a thing.

Why exactly does he need to go?

Na don't send him. If Ricki personally sees that he needs to be there then maybe consider it. Otherwise, this isn't fair on the Nix. Terry has supported the AW's through and through so now NZF should support Terry's decision. Turner would be happy to go. And send Bannatyne and Barron too haha

Keep Ricki here I think. Big game that Melbourne one. But won't be too bothered if he does go.

So why do we want him to go? No good reason?

A lot of deals happen in that environment, handshake agreements for friendlies leading into the World Cup buildup, other networking.  All that being said, Send BT and Van Hattum, Phoenix need him more on Dec 4 than NZF.

Because pretty much every other coach will be there.

It'd be a bit of snub to FIFA, who like to make the big deal of the draw, trotting out celebrities, past and occassionally current stars...don't think it'd be a good look for us. Plus sure Ricky would love to be there, and it's not like we've never had to cope without his presence on the bench before.

Yeah i wouldn't mind Ricki heading over. I think the Nix could handle without him for a couple days.

Its a pretty big occasion. I would assume every other coach would be there?

If its so important he is there maybe its time for Terry to seriously consider his coaching options. This is not going to be the only conflict arising in the next few months. Many have said he could handle both jobs, just maybe that is no longer the case.

Ridiculous. See how the Nix have improved over these last few seasons and how the All Whites just qualified..he's doing a good job on both counts. To sack him over something as small as this would be stupid. And what other conflicts will be arising over the next few months, pray tell?

Read it again did i say sack him.You mean to say that at no time during the coming  months there are going to be no conflicts at all.Have my Phoenix hat on here and sorry no i dont think he should go,the games around that time could be crucial to if we make the playoffs or not.

How can you 'consider other coaching options' if you aren't going to sack the current one?

Well ... He could coach via a television set ? Talking on a phone to Luc and Gould during the game.

There is a very important reciprocal relationship that has arisen between the Nix and AWs as a result of Ricki coaching both and also the effects that each have on the other. The next 7 months will definitely require some fine balancing if we are to avoid any detriment to either side. Hopefully Terry and Tony with their fantastic nous and NZF can cooperate to ensure the success of both our beloved teams.

If that means compromises and sacrifices then I'm happy with that.

Not worried at all. The All Whites wont play many games between now and the WC and the A-League schedule is hardly hectic

With all the other national coaches in the one place, after the draw is done, the bidding for the pre WC final matches begins almost straightaway. We need Ricki and coaching staff to be therefore to decide which teams are in line for the lead up games before the WC. Preparation game against decent opponents will be sorted very quickly.

The early bird get the first worm.
