Yeah when you hear that a 34yo thats been out 14 months with a knee reconstruction is only 1 of 2 players passing the fitness test, it makes you shake your head but also marvel at him. I know he swearing by his religion and perhaps that has made him a better professional (no alcohol etc)

He has always been a footballer with talent but its also a very 1 dimensional talent. You don't play at the level he has, if you don't have any and at the moment, he is a fit experienced pro that Hudson will desperately want to be a good influence on the team kinda like Ivan may have done in the past.

You maybe right Jeff about Fallon being one dimensional but his selection should stop his old man spouting off in the media

Looking at Fallon on TV, he definitely looks (very) fit

The most disappointing non-selection for me is Boyd. I would think his club Vitoria would release him, as he hasn't been in their first team squad since January. Forwards are the 'strength' of this team, but he was considered good enough to start a league game verus Porto by his Portuguese employers who see him every day at training.

Should be there ahead of Patterson, or Rogerson.

People are complaining about the defence, but who is better?

If AWs get bundled out on defensive blunders, does Hudson go back on his word and make peace with an 'apologetic' Smith, for home & away qualifiers later this year?

looks like 4-4-2 to me with 2 players picked for every position apart from left back where there's just doyle, so maybe tuiloma is being considered for that role?

my best back 4 from this lot would have themi and tuiloma in it. the problem is that my best midfield would also have them there too. this really highlights the lack of quality in the squad.

i don't have a problem with the forwards selected. i think a front 4 of rojas, barbarouses, smeltz/fallon and wood is not too shabby.

someone mentioned that our top 4 keepers are all about the same. i completely disagree; moss is miles ahead of the rest and, like JD said,  this eye injury wreaks of BS

Very interesting to compare his attitude with Tommys given they both played at youth level for England and both wanted to wear Three Lions before the Fern.

Yep good on him. Interesting selection though, can only think it's so he can take a leadership role to help out what is a very young side.

listening to Hudson on Radiosport re Winston- he said he'd only be available for the group games and miss the semi and final. Can anyone explain why? Is the window shorter than the tournament and is Hudson implying that WHFC would have called him back?

In the selection press conference, Hudson said that Reid had an "injury interrupted with West Ham and I have decided it is in his and the teams best interests to get him right for the rest of the year"

It sounds as if Reid was willing to play some of the games but knows he needs some time off before resuming pre-season training

The fact that Reid has said he would be available for some games shows he is nothing like that tractor boy Twit who thinks just proposing to his girlfriend is a reasonable excuse for missing international games

I think Hudson has made the right call

These are my issues:

GK - I know Moss is better than the other three but I'm not overly outraged by this one, the injury does seem like a cover-up but I don't think this will be what potentially costs us

Defence - you could argue that Hudson has had his defence decimated by withdrawals and injuries, but apart from Storm which he couldn't plan for surely even the most blind person could see that you might not have Smith and Reid for these games.  Where is the succession planning?  How come if Adams is one of his go to picks he hasn't been involved previously - we shouldn't be going into these games with players on debut.

Midfield - disgusted by some of the selections here, surely with the lack of experience in the team you could afford to grab some oversea's pro's like Chris James (who has always been good in an All Whites shirt), even Clapham has been playing at a higher level than Moses...

Forwards - can't complain here, I think we have a good mix and this is the strength of our team - but we will need to be clinical because we are going to concede a few I would think.

As someone said Adams isn't even the best kiwi in the South Melbourne backline and Clapham and Peverley both better and playing better than Dyer.

IIRC, was the club face for Wynton's academy (like Wgtn Utd/Wests/Olympic are for 'Nix/Ole/Kaizer down here) and now the 'Nix's academy (as they have taken over Wynton's academy like the did with APFA)  in Auckland.

I think that's right

That or pinched parts of it, Hiroshi and Leigh run the Phoenix soccer school in Akl with ties to Onehunga the same - looks just like a Wynrs rebrand to Phoenix. Though Wynrs is still going it seems, just not to the same level as before?

I'm shocked.  I just looked up the NRFL table, and given they have 3 International midfielders I expected Onehunga Sports to be out in front on their own, however they are locked in a mid table battle.  Has Hudson taken a look at the Hamilton Wanderers or Glenfield Rovers midfield while out scouting?  Must be a heap of unnoticed talent there.

Edit: Just noticed that they have lost points for ineligible players, so I withdraw and apologise.

Goodluck boys. Least we got Rory the flying Mellon up front as a personal fan favourite and Phoenix spectulative player. I feel sorry for de vries and James Mcgarry after the pair had solid domestic seasons.

I did too and the think that got me is that guys like keat payne or howieson are busting their ass to become/stay pros yet they are effectively discarded in favour of some kids who have never been. Are dyer lewis & hudson wihongi likely to be pros within the next 5 years or even 2 heading to russia? Me thinks not.

And it's not a case of them not getting game time overseas stopping them getting selected, look at Rory.
