TW website says that Cole Tinkler and Daniel Ellensohn have been selected for Oly Squad to Fiji - does anyone know where the full squad list is published?

I dont think the team sheet will get published till aweek or 2 before the first game.
Im really looking forward to these games as Fiji has had a very good build up and the Oly-Whites have some good homegrown talent.

Same old wellington "Plus you would have to throw Costa in there" In reality he probly will get selected but he didn't impress me in the u20 world cup and has been unsighted since then apart from some cameo apperences for the nix.  He however will prob end up on the Ricky Herbert gravy train like Stephen Old has and get a free ride for the next five years.
wasn't that the u17s world cup, hard to impress when he's not playing.

I heard he crumbled a bit under the pressure of captaining the U17's but he'll improve with experience. I think he felt that it was all on his shoulders.

according to RNZ news, the draw for the olympic qualifying tournament has NZ as the only team that plays all it's matches at the hottest time of the day

the scourge of winston (and the resulting response, from whomever) is still f**king us up!

apparently the draw is as yet unconfirmed -so hopefully a bit of media attention might lead to a more just ouctcome

It could also be because Fiji might see us as their greatest threat to qualification - take care of NZ and the rest of the draw would be no problem?

yep, that's a much more likely conspiracy theory, but putting the boot in winston is also necessary until someone pays us back the money he 'stole'

Totally agree - It's all Winnies fault, no matter how reasonable other arguments may be, even my own

(Flat modem died, it just got fixed today. Of course, with my flatmates moving out, they're taking the modem so I better start catching up...)

I see that Shaun van Rooyen got a call up to the Olly-Whites, His Uncle Rodney was a hell of a player in South Africa - Also i belive Shaun once had a beer-can chucked at him during a AW Vs Aus game when he stood up and cheered when the aussies scored.
Good on him hope he does well.

that might because the under-staffed FNZ is busy with one or two accounting matters

The media department ?

I'm thinking of emailing OFC to ask them.

I'm sure it's all hands to the pump , either that or the workplace subbuteo competition is at a critical stage

and given the variance in figures over the last few weeks the media department might well have had their paws on the calculators and their creative acumen to the fore (but, even so, surely they could just cut and pasted the squad announcement from a previous media release!)

regarding your OFC plan, another option would be to see if we can prise the information out of NZF under the official information act (given SPARC funding)  or we could just keep on waiting patiently

perhaps if there is a YF member who is a member of the SIS...??

Edginton-Van Rooyen answer Oly-Whites call -->

NZF/February 14, 2008

AUCKLAND ï¿½ Four All Whites have been named but New Zealand has been robbed of promising Sunderland FC defender Jack Pelter in a blow to their bid for a place at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Injury has cruelly ruled Pelter and his Junior All Whites (U-20) team-mate Nick Roydhouse out of the March 1-9 Oceania Olympic Games qualifying tournament at Churchill Park in Lautoka, Fiji.

University of Louisville defender Phil Edginton replaces Pelter who injured his ankle in his first training session back for Sunderlands reserves after a lengthy spell out with a broken foot.

It is another setback for the Cantabrian who signed for the English premier league club after co-captaining New Zealand and scoring their sole goal - at last years FIFA U-20 Mens World Cup in Canada.

Waikato FC playmaker Shaun Van Rooyen one of 12 NZFC players selected in Stu Jacobs 20-man Oly-Whites squad comes in for Roydhouse who broke a leg playing for YoungHeart Manawatu in the national league on Waitangi Day.

Thai Airways All Whites squad members Daniel Ellensohn, Jacob Spoonley, Jeremy Brockie and Steven Old have been named but only Ellensohn has seen recent game-time for the senior national team.

Jacobs will coach the U-23 Oly-Whites with All Whites and Wellington Phoenix boss Ricki Hebert seeking a release from the role to concentrate on his national team and A-League commitments.

The Oly-Whites open their campaign against hosts Fiji on March 1 a tough start to the round-robin tournament where the winner (providing final signoff is granted by the Oceania champions respective Olympic Committee) earns automatic entry into the 16-nation mens draw for Beijing.

It is understood at least some of the nine players fined and booted off Fijis Olympic squad for breaking a team curfew recently have been reinstated by the Fijian FA.

Fiji will be especially confident after an encouraging camp in Queensland earlier this month where they overpowered Brisbane Olympic 3-2, Brisbane Strikers 4-1, Palm Beach XI 5-1 and Runaway Bay XI 7-0 in an unbeaten build-up tour.

The Oly-Whites preparation will remain on-shore with a 10-day camp at the Millennium Institute on Aucklands North Shore from Monday before the squad departs for Fiji on February 27.

It promises to be a busy time for Jacobs who has guided Team Wellington into playoff contention for the NZFC. Shortly after he returns from the desired Olympic date in Beijing in August, Jacobs will be charged with guiding the Junior All Whites to back-to-back FIFA U-20 World Cups.

New Zealand has never qualified for the Olympics, narrowly dipping out to now Asian-aligned Australia for a place at the 2004 Athens Games. Olympic qualifying football is played by U-23 teams with three over-age players permitted at the Games proper.
.
The other participating nations at next months Oceania qualifiers are Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

Meanwhile, Football Ferns coach John Herdman is expected to announce his senior womens squad shortly for the one-off, winner takes all Olympic womens qualifier against PNG in Port Moresby on March 8.

In other news, the All Whites have climbed four spots to 90th in the latest FIFA world rankings.

Oly-Whites squad for Oceania Olympic Mens Qualifying tournament at Churchill Park, Lautoka, Fiji from March 1-9.

Goalkeepers: Jacob Spoonley (Wellington Phoenix), Liam Little (Otago United), Michael OKeeffe (Canterbury United).

Defenders: Aaron Scott (Waitako FC), Steven Old (Wellington Phoenix), Michael Boxall (University of Santa Barbara), Phil Edginton (University of Louisville), Cole Tinkler (Team Wellington), Joel Mathews (Auckland City), Hone Fowler (Waikato FC).

Midfielders: Jason Hayne (Waitakere United), Jeremy Brockie (Hawkes Bay United), Cole Peverley (Hawkes Bay United), Craig Henderson (Dartmouth College), Shaun Van Rooyen (Waikato FC), Dan Keat (Dartmouth College).

Strikers: Greg Draper (Wellington Phoenix), Costa Barbarouses (Wellington Phoenix), Daniel Ellensohn (Team Wellington), Sam Messam (Hawkes Bay United).

Management team - Coach: Stu Jacobs (Team Wellington). Assistant/Goalkeeping coach: Jonathan Gould (Hawkes Bay United). Trainer: Andy Smith (Team Wellington). Manager: Jim Hogg. Doctor: Celeste Geerstema. Physiotherapist: Roland Jeffery. Massage therapist: Wade Irvine.

Final draw to follow from OFC.

It's pretty much the core of the Under-20's, which when you consider the coaches is no suprise.

There aren't many from the previous Under-20 squad still there though, Old ?  Maybe Fowler, Cole, did Ellensohn play in that  ?  I'll try and work out who was in that last U-20 side.

No Chris James, but he may have burnt some bridges with the Under-20's and is trying to establish himself as a player again,  Sam Jenkins is another former 'bright young thing' who isn't longer in the loop, and Pelter a noteable ommission (that's why they noted it).

He went to the US for about a week and came back saying it was rubbish.  Hawkes Bay are converting him to Right Back, which isn't a bad idea as we don't have many.

Here was the previous U-20 squad.  Trouble was it was 2002 so many too old for the Under-23s:

TAMATI WILLIAMS

GLEN MOSS

ANDREW BOYEN

NATHAN STROM

MATTHEW ADAMS

PETER HOWE

JEREMY CHRISTIE

JASON ROWLEY

MORGAN McCARRISON

ANDREW GRIFFITHS

JAROD SMITH

WAYNE ROOKER

ADAM CHURCH

STUART HOGG

ROSS MCKENZIE

DALIN WILSON

MITCH BRYDON

CHAD COOMBES

HONE FOWLER

BRENT FISHER

...and many of them have disappeared or turned to rubbish.

As much as Costa is a talent and should be able to play anywhere, in the U17 world cup, he was played out of position and the style of play had changed from the format from when they went through oceania qualifying.

Knowing how the young man plays there is no one in his immediate age group in NZ that can even hold a candle to him as a finisher....but you are right Valeo, he will, get better with more experience...and being part of the Olywhites will again help him develop.

Interesting team doubt they will qualify though few terrible selections and the heat and lack o preparations will hurt them. Yeah James and Jenkins the most noticeable admissions. Jenkins is injured though didnt play last week but he isnt mentioned as making the initial team then replaced like pelter and roydhouse. He has been pretty quality in the few games I saw for HB at right back and was also very effective for the Under 20s on either wing at the World Cup so was interesting to not see his name.

I cant understand why Sam Jenkins is not included in the squad. He was one of the standout under 20's in Canada and he certainly has performed in a new position for H.B.U. so far this season. I think he has played every minute for his team except when he was injured last week. I thought the team was to be picked on form. It looks a joke with some of the players named. Perhaps they dont want them to qualify.

Actually I was a bit disappointed by his displays in Canada, he showed a lot more in the qualifiers and when I've seen him for Hawkes Bay.  Perhaps the change of position isn't quite there yet ?

You would think Gould and Jacobs know him better than anyone, and they made the decision.

James will be missing as he's nowhere near match fit, based on reports out of Finland.

As for not wanting them to qualify ?  Once they qualify pretty much all costs are met by bodies other than NZ Football from my understanding so it seems unlikely as the bills remain the same.

Interested to know who else you think should have made it Uptheev...

Was talking to a couple of people at a national youth league game last night and they said Stu Jacobs had nothing to do with picking the team and Rob Sherman picked it as Stu was only bought in as coach at the 11th hour. Yeah Chris James probably needs to concentrate on re establishing his club career.
