The New Zealand under 23 men's football coach Stu Jacobs hopes to name a couple of our British-based stars in his Olympic squad which could be released today.

Jacobs will name an extended squad and he says he's very happy he'll be able to include a couple of key over-age players, three of whom are allowed in a playing side.

He says Ryan Nelsen, Simon Elliott and Chris Killen have all been positive and he'd like to think their clubs would be, too, because it's pre-season.

And Jacobs says not many athletes, let alone footballers, get to go to the Olympics so they're very keen.

Has the team been officially announced?

They (RNZ) said yesterday at about 5.00 that it would be announced "in the next few days"

If i recall what i heard correctly, it is initially going to be an expanded squad with final places confirmed closer to the tourney

wonder if Michael White will get a spot?? he's U23 and seems like he has been doing well in Wales.

Oh and what about Pelter? and is Chris James under 23?

James would be close to a certainty if match fit... although his skipping the Under-20's may have burnt some bridges.

Pre-season? Hardly. If England (August 9) and Scotland (August 2) kick-off their seasons at the same time as last season, then Celtic will start their season before the Olympics begin. Blackburn will, if they get their way, will have commenced their Inter Toto campaign and start their season two days after NZ's first match. Fulham will also start their season two days after NZ's first match.

Question - I've asked this before - does the Olympics represent a competition that the clubs have no official say in whether players are released? Whilst FIFA sanction the competition, it is not a senior competition and British players don't get to play in the Olympics. So I don't know whether British clubs have to release players if they don't want to. Anyone?

Found this on the web dosen't look good unless the clubs say yes:
Blatter wants clubs to release players over age 23 for Beijing Olympics

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP)FIFA president Sepp Blatter wants older players who wish to compete in the Beijing Olympics to be released from their club obligations, despite rules from soccers world governing body that suggest otherwise.

National squads can take up to three players over the age of 23 to the Olympics, but clubs can refuse under FIFA rules to let older players take part.

One player who has expressed an interest in playing is AC Milan and Brazil midfielder Kaka, who will be 26 in August.

For any player, the Olympic football tournament represents a highlight of his career, and I hope that a solution can be found, Blatter said Friday.

The Olympics clashes with preseason training in some of the worlds top soccer leagues.

Chris James burned a lot of bridges in walking away from the U20's. Jacobs is justified in not putting him in there, we need 18 fully committed players who playing for their country means everything to compete in China

I really hope one of the two parties can move towards mending that relationship - we can't really afford to have players of his calibre not being picked on the basis of personal disagreements.

Thanks Teza. In that case,  I would be surprised if they get released. Best hope Blackburn don't pick up an Intertoto spot, as that would mean their season starting in July. On the upside though, I see that the English Prem have said they are starting a week later this year. That would mean the Olympics group stage will be completed 3 days before the season starts. It is theoretically possible for Blackburn to play their Intertoto matches in July, let Nelsen go to China for the group phase and then get him back for the season. However, if Blackburn win their Intertoto match then they could have a UEFA Cup tie to play that might clash - depends when the second qualifying round is placed. There are internationals on August 20, so I suspect the timing will be as per last year and be on Aug 14, in which case there would be little chance of Nelsen being released.

I can't find a definitive start date for the Championship, but August 9 is the most common date being mentioned by unofficial sources. That would give Simon Elliot a problem unless Fulham sell him - assuming they go down as seems likely.

I haven't seen any official or unofficial indication for Celtic's season, but Scotland often start in the first weekend of August. Celtic will have European Champions League fixtures. This is will be either the second qualifying round (early August) or third qualifying round (mid-August) depending on whether they win the league or Rangers do. So Killen stands little chance - though UEFA might have a different timeline for 2008/9?

Chris James has played for the All Whites, since the U-20's Jacobs must not like him, which is a huge shame he as an awesome 20 year old player, NZ's best at that age group.  Also what about Bertos instead of Lochead, Im sure hes a better player.  Good to see Jenkins back as well...............We need skillful players

It seems quite clear to me that both Chris James and Michael White had fallings out with Jacobs as these to guys are miles ahead of vertually all the rest of the guys in the squad, give or take.  I have a feeling that this is a similar situation to the one that saw Buncy and Hickey hang their boots up.

(PS I just watched some local footie here in Kingston, Jamaica, the local Reggae boys look pretty sharp!)

As for Chris James I have heard a number of things from sources not sure what is true though. I heard he turned up pre world cup last year in awful shape and was playing terribly leading up to the World cup then he left a couple of days out for god knows what reason. I also heard he was invited to the olympic qualifying but turned it down as he had better things to do. John Obi Mikel from Chelsea did this and the Nigerian Federation told him were to stick it in regards to the olympics now they qualified. I have seen James play in the U20 world cup qualifiers and on Tv for the All Whites a couple of times and there is no doubt he is a talented player and impressed me but I think his problem is he thinks he is a big timer when he has never really done anything week in week out in club football. I mean did he ever play a 1st team game for Fulham and do anything? It may be a different story if he was paying week in week out in the premiership but hes not and I heard from a couple of All Whites he turns up there like a big timer when he is the youngest member of the team and this loses respect of his team mates. Just my 2 cents as for Mr White I actually dont rate him that much he never impressed me for the Knights or in the NZFC and he is just too slow, decent skills and seems to be doing ok overseas  but its hard to judge the level of some of the obscure lower leagues in europe.

depends on what qualities you're judging. It'll be about squad balance, and lets not forget Lochead has been class all season (well, when we were playing 4-4-2)

Who cares if Chris James thinks he is sh*t hot. He is a good player. I think he is sh*t hot myself.

He probably did have better things to do than play against the oceania teams in qualifiers. He had to find a job that was going to pay him, which he has done now by getting into Tampere Utd.

If all international players who were arrogant were dropped England would probably only be able to choose from non-league players..lol or maybe even school boy level.

How many times has Ryan Nelsen turned down the All Whites? our coaches still bow and grease up to him.

If we build it, they will come...

Yeah you are right about him getting a job cause thats his livelyhood so that is fair enough! Ha trying to compare Ryan Nelsen to Chris James key difference is Ryan Nelsen is a somebody he is the captain of a Premiership team and he starts every week when fit. Chris James never has played a 1st team game and I agree he is a great player but hes a nobody in terms of european soccer he didnt even get picked up at any of the smaller teams he trialed at in the UK.

Your right about arrogance look at most top players they are arrogant as hell eg Ronaldo! But they have the right to be they are somebodies and yeah I have no problem in 3 or 4 years time when James has played in the premiership turning up for the All whites and being a big timer but until then he needs to sort his sh*t out and focus on doing well for tampere and getting out of that league

Just to let everyone know, i saw chris play this weekend for tampere and came on in the second half . PLayed very well for his first game. Very technical player with some nice touches, and bundles of energy. From what iv been told from people who have spoken to chris he was offered a new contract at fulham but turned it down, So actually wasnt released. He went on trial at clubs but none were of the standerd of football he was looking for. He was called to the olmpic qualifiers but was still trying to sort out his contract in europe so that was a more important. And is now establishing himself as a 1st team regular. From what we have seen in our pre seasons games, fulhams loss is very much our game. Does anyone know if he will get called up for nz mens games and when they are. We dont have a huge squad so wouldnt like to lose him for internationals??

Thanks for your comments TampereFC.

I attached our world cup qualifiers schedule above. Note: the Indonesian game is just a friendly so will probably be played by most of our local players rather than players from Europe.

I would like to think Chris James will be around for those World Cup games!

Is that game against Indonesia actually happening?  I remember looking at the NZ mens fixture list on the fifa website well over a year ago and it said we were playing Indonesia then too and nothing happened (from memory it said we were going to play them twice actually).

Who knows. If NZ football updated there website it might help. They haven't even updated the fiji game. How hopeless are they? this is the 2008 fixtures from the www.nzsoccer.com site:
2008           September 6 Oceania WCQ v New Caledonia Noumea September 10 Oceania WCQ v New Caledonia New Zealand (Venue TBC)
