What is up with them? Are they amateur or what? They certainly don't look like they should be paid anyway!
Didn't see the whole of the China game but the bits I saw were baffling. And there were many bewildering decisions vs Brazil too.. Many times I thought he'd given what looked like a fairly normal free kick, except he gave it the other way?!

yeah, theyve been terrible - in both the Oly Whites games, plus the Brazil v Belgium game and a couple of the women's matches I've watched. Yellows for nothing, free kicks the wrong way, off sides that werent, consistently poor decision-making.

Old vs China and Brockie vs Brazil spring instantly to mind.

I would like to think that they had been bribed then. At least that would give them an excuse for the decisions they have been making. Plus it would be a great mark of respect that they needed to bribe the ref vs Brazil!

im not grizzling about last night, although brockie's yellow was rubbish, but about the quaity overall in all the games ive seen, nz involved or not. theyve been strikingly bad

They're also awful in onfield positions. They are always in the bloody way!!!

Yeah they're simply monstrous. Amateurs surely? NZFC refs should go over there instead. Brockie's yellow was a none-too-amusing joke, and Steven Olds second was simply ridiculous. As long as I don't see anything like in NZ vs Japan. That really was woeful - I suppose at least you can say the ref was consistent (if that's any consolation).

Mike Hester, NZFC ref and occassional A-League ref was reffing a match last night maybe Italy vs Korea ?

Hi
The 16 male referees at the Olympics are all in the final 53 being considered for South Africa 2010. The panel of 53 is named the elite panel of which New Zealand has Peter O'Leary and Mike Hester there. Some will be 'released' from that 53 down to 32 (figures are about right) in September. I understand that the Olympic performances could be a factor in whether or not some referees are retained in that 32 be so sure they will be trying their hardest as ultimately it could or could not affect their chances of going to South Africa.
Something to possibly consider that is part of the psychology of refereeing is that refereeing in a tournament is different to refereeing a regular league match. Forget to send a player off or miss something and its a ticket home. On a league match, you may not get used for 3 weeks (as an example) but you'll be back. You may complain about the harshness or severity of some sanctions but those guys are operating to FIFA instrucions in a world tournament on a world stage. Failure to comply is not an option. They train 2 hours each day (not on match day) so the effort is certainly there.
I believe Mike refereed USA vs Netherlands. How he got on I'm not sure.

The ref robbed us in that Brazilian match!
He robbed Brockie from the next match by dishing out a yellow card when in reality he was just reaching for his hanky.

Who has seen the Brazil vs Argentina semi? Two straight reds, neither of which is even close. With the news that 16 of these refs will b at the world cup...look out
Normo's coming home

I watched the Argentina vs Brazil semi last night! Although Argentina were worthy winners and played very well the ref was atrocious! He gave Lucas a straight Red for what was maybe a yellow then Thiago Neves a straight red for a tackle that was barely a free kick let alone a card. They seem absolute power crazy! they are ruining games its not about them its about the players! Was that ref the same one NZ had against China from Uruguay?

Agree, the refs and linesmen have been sub-par. Far too many straight red cards for relatively innocuous fouls. As well as the ones last night there were others that went against Belgium and Cameroon, both ridiculous. The reffing in the Brazil v Cameroon match was the worst I have seen at this level in years.
Also, in last night's Nigeria v Belgium game one of the linesmen succeeded in getting his every call wrong, with two of the Nigerian goals being blatantly offside.
In contrast the reffing in the womens' matches has been excellent, but then the way the women play the game makes the ref's job much easier.
