DECEMBER 19th
Evening all, thought I'd just start a random strand to showcase games that happened "on this day", just for a bit of nostalgia etc.  To that end, here is the only game I can find that we ever played on December 19!  and not a bad one at all :)

This clip is now also up on NZF's official YouTube channel.  I'm figuring they've taken it from my channel.  Be nice to get a heads up in the future (if anyone from NZF is on here...).

This is a famous date in All Whites history - the epic World Cup qualifying playoff in Singapore in 1982.  A match that had it all - if you've not seen these highlights before, take a few minutes, it's worth it!!

Still have strong memories of this epic, getting up early morning as a 12 yr old to watch with my rugby mad old man. Football (soccer) really captured the whole country over that '82 qualifying campaign. Getting up watch games in far away Kuwait, Saudi Arabia etc became a routine, with lots of dramatic moments.

Playoff was a virtual home game for China, with such a big Chinese popn in Singers. Though NZ at the time had an army detachment there, so AWs had a small supporters group.

Nice little summary 4 min video below. Including a suspended Brian Turner regaling how he watching at home in Auckland, and was so nervous he couldn't watch the 2nd half and wandered Sandringham Rd in the dark until game end!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhndXP_dZUo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJZ4n-9LS50

If AWs make Intercontinental playoff in Qatar verus CONCACAF, could be shades of 1982 all over again - being one off at a neutral venue, as opposed to 2 legs.

You feel it's certainly going to be a nerve wracking watch for sure.

[Edited: 12/1/22]
Indeed, a match so important in NZ football history , it probably deserves its own thread.
Especially since today is actually the 40th anniversary of the match.
Which is the reason I came on here today to see if anyone was on to this and was pleasantly surprised to find  this.
I watched this as a 16 year-old who had followed the whole campaign from that first draw with the Socceroos at Mount Smart on ANZAC Day, April 1981.
It was very exciting for a teenage football fan in Nelson, with Fallon (assistant coach)and five of the players having played for Nelson United in the years before (Richard Wilson, Kenny Cresswell, Ricki Herbert, Keith McKay, Peter Simonsen) Ten of the 22 man 1982 World Cup Finals squad had played for South Island national league teams in the years before the qualifiers, several of them most of their NZ career to that point. Which shows you how strong football was in the South Island in the 1970's and early 1980's (Christchurch United & other Chch clubs, Dunedin City, Nelson United).

It's great that Khalil Media has put up his entire collection of highlights of All Whites matches (those he legally can) on his "All Whites History" thread on here. Quite a trip down memory lane and most of it impossible to find anywhere else.!
Complete past All Whites matches are hard to find due to strict copyright enforcement or lack of surviving footage (wiped by TVNZ, not available from foreign TV companies etc.).
You can find the whole earlier group match vs. China from 1981 on You Tube, complete with the build-up show hosted by a young Peter Williams here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovKR6hYJxDk
It's a transfer of someone's video of the NZ TV broadcast so the picture quality isn't up to moden digital standards - but it's still great to see (and otherwise not available anywhere else)
NZ vs. Kuwait and NZ vs. Fiji full matches 1982 home qualifiers are also on this fantastic "Old Football Matches" You Tube channel here:

NZ vs. Israel 1990 WC qualifier, Auckland full match here:

Download "Clip Grab" free software here and then you can download such rare videos to keep on your computer (and then even burn onto a DVD):
https://clipgrab.en.softonic.com/
(once you have the software, choose "original format" or "MP4" for downloading videos, "MP3" for audio clips such as albums on You Tube)

Back in Ken Dugdale's tenure, the All Whites played China in Guangzhou in a match featuring Raf de Gregorio's senior debut.  Didn't win unfortunately - going down to a strike from Li Tie (later of Everton)...

All the way back in 1997, the All Whites took part in a tournament in Australia that was designed for new Socceroos coach Terry Venables to test out the domestic-based players available to him prior to World Cup qualifiers later in the year.  First match saw the hosts face New Zealand - these are the highlights from a windy Melbourne evening :)

Both sides should have scored 3 goals and some of the tackles would have resulted in cards, especially for the AW's if the current A League referees were doing the game.

On this day back in 2000 the All Whites hosted South Korea in a friendly at North Harbour Stadium.  Almost felt like an away match due to the Korean contingent in the stands!!  And they were crazy for Ahn, the attacker who would endear himself to Italian fans a couple of years later during the World Cup :)

On this day back in 1997, the All Whites played the second match of an Australian tournament against Norway, a team in the midst of a purple patch that saw them qualify for the World Cups of 1994 and 1998.  The Norwegians didn't have their strongest possible lineup in this game, but a strong one nonetheless, and just had too much class overall.

I remember watching these games and a mate saying to me, 'man, we've gone backwards haven't we?'. I agreed.
Then soon after Joe McGrath took over from Keith Pritchett. It only got worse.

On this day in 1998 the All Whites hosted Chile at Mt Smart, with ex-pat Chileans making for an awesome crowd atmosphere.  Some interesting debutantes for the All Whites (Jonathan Perry, Paul Urlovic, Chris Bouckenooghe, Scott Smith) and a performance from Danny Hay that earned him a trial at Leeds.  0-0 was a creditable final result against strong opposition.

On this day back in 1998, the All Whites played South Korea 3 days after facing Chile (that was two teams who had qualified for France '98 in less than a week!).  The result went against them this time, but some good football again - and yes, the last match of Joe McGrath's tenure...

On this day back in 2006, the All Whites hosted Malaysia at QEII Park in Christchurch (RIP).  It was the second match of Ricki Herbert's reign, and his first fixture on home soil (yes, they were a thing back then...).  It was a relatively young squad, even with Danny Hay's experience at captain and Vaughan Coveny up front.  The game was notable for the late winning goal from (then) promising youngster Steven Old, and the debut from the bench of a dreadlocked Jeremy Brockie.

Seems sadly to have been the way with a lot of old NZ football coverage. You'd think they would have broadcast the full matches after the success of 1982 but who knows!

On this day back in 2010, the All Whites played their first match since beating Bahrain in the WCQ playoff, facing Mexico in Pasadena, California.  It was essentially the beginning of preparations, and saw debuts for a now-eligible-again Tommy Smith, and Auckland City's Chad Coombes.  Result wasn't flash, but we learnt some things, as they say...

On this day back in 1973, New Zealand played its first ever qualifier on home soil (our only previous qualifiers, in 1969, had both been played in Tel Aviv).  Fittingly we hosted Australia, matched them pretty well and even took the lead!!  They equalised late on, but set the campaign off on a good footing (although Australia ultimately would top the group and make their WC debut at West Germany '74).  Nonetheless, this is some cool footage of an historic match - and who doesn't love a loud crowd at Newmarket Park?!

On this day back in 1989 the All Whites faced Israel in front of a raucous crowd in Tel Aviv for a World Cup qualifier.  They were undone by an early strike by Ronny Rosenthal (then at Standard Liege, but later of Liverpool and Spurs fame), but were under the pump for most of the match.  Sadly the match wasn't broadcast into NZ, so the only footage available is these highlights that played in Australia...

Two clips for this date.  Back in 1977, a young Steve Sumner smashed a hattrick as NZ beat Taiwan at Newmarket Park in a World Cup Qualifier, and then in 1988 the All Whites ground out a 1-1 draw against Australia in Wellington in an Olympic qualifier, thanks to another Mike McGarry goal.
