The football has been brilliant. To my amazement FIFA and their accompanying administrators have really missed a BIG opportunity.

Only one kiosk open, selling hoodies and FIFA tee Shirts - That's it, no flags, posters, jersey's, hats, nothing to indicate any of the teams participating.

They could have made a killing with merchandising. Those Nigerian jackets looked primo, England jerseys would have gone like hot cakes as well as Brazilian ones.

A missed chance. Oh and take a coke bottle cap with you to the next game so your kids dont have to down the entire bottle in one hit.

Agreed mate, it was strange that they didn't have any merchandise especially for England / Brazil. You'd hope they will organise something for when NZ are playing at the very least.

what do you mean LG? Do they pour it into a cup or something or keep the cap so you have to buy another one later?

Not expecting kit (wouldnt spend that much on NZ anyway TBH) - scarves, flags, anything would be nice.

rightstr, you get a bottle of say Coke, they screw off the lid, keep it and give you the bottle capless, which is a pain if you're going on a run for a few people. The beer is served in plastic cups.

When you buy a soft drink at the Stadium, they are removing the caps - allegedly under FIFA instruction as they "feel" fans might fill the bottles, recap them and throw them!!

Yeah right, at an U17 Girls World Cup, fans have nothing better to do than throw full Coke bottles everywhere.

They take the bottle caps off and they wont let you have them!

Although I agree it is a weird rule you could see why they do it at the big events and from everything I have seen it seems they treat events like this just the same.
And some xtra merchandise would be cool, maybe on Tuesday night someone who had a connection to a football shop could set up a kiosk somewhere around the bus station to sell NZ scarves or flags

this is BULLsH*T cos at Wgtn Stadium on Thursday FIFA laxed rules and let Kids bring in any food they wanted

from Stuff:

Hamilton stadium bins children's food By FLORENCE KERR - Waikato Times | Saturday, 01 November 2008

Hamilton intermediate school children were left begging for their food at the Fifa Under-17 Women's World Cup at Waikato Stadium.

Fairfield Intermediate deputy principal Lisa Morresey was disappointed with stadium management for what she said was a financially based decision which resulted in her students being forced to throw away food they had taken to the stadium on Thursday.

"Kids were begging them (security staff) not to throw out their lunches. One of the security guards must have felt pity because he contacted his boss to ask if it was really necessary.

"His boss said that no food was to be taken in and so the children were made to empty their lunch boxes."

The school had told the 26 students to bring a packed lunch, not money, to the game and most went without food from 11am to 3pm.

A few of the children managed to sneak in fruit, Mrs Morresey said.

Bruce Storrie was shocked when his son told him what had happened.

"I thought, how could they do this to the kids?

"I think confiscating food from children is pretty rank," Mr Storrie said. "It's so wrong."

Waikato Stadium events facilities manager Mark Christie said the school was sent an information guide surrounding the stadium's policy.

"Clear instructions went to all schools and sports co-ordinators, regarding the rules of food and drink, which clearly state that none can be brought in.

"We are a licensed premises, it's just like if you brought food from home to a restaurant to eat, you wouldn't do it."

Mr Christie said he could not understand why the students did not eat their lunches on the open fields surrounding the stadium.

"There obviously has been a mis-communication which is really unfortunate."

He said he hoped the incident would not overshadow the event.

And what about the adults?? Dont they eat or drink? What about the FIFA menu of which you could not purchase anything on it?? No bottle tops were allowed, they were removed by the catering staff at point of purchase - fact! this did not happen at the NPC final - a major event - fact.

It's all crap.  Big ups to FIFA for keeping the ticket prices low and inviting kids but to not let them take food in is ridiculous.  I was also surprised the merchandising was so rank - not even a tournament programme that I could see only that crap thing they gave out when you went in.  Fortunately, the football has spoken for itself - nothing to complain about there!

The football has been of the highest quality from all the sides. Sure the odd hiccup but I have really appreciated the Womens attitude to the game - Getting on with it and never giving up. No cynical fouls, no dramtics, no gobbing off at the match officials. Good sportswomenship all round.

I wonder if there will be as high a Police profile at the game today as was there last thursday?? Just woke up after pulling a 16 hour double shift, too late to get to the game bugger it. I'll have to park up in front of the telly.

You know how they are removing the bottle caps, that is so they win a car if they get them, they are breaking the fair trade act

Yeah why was that?

The lady jokingly said you dont throw it at the players and my response obviously in a sarcast way was well the bottle is much bigger?

Digging through old post here but there must a proper answer for this?

With a lid, you can refill a bottle, screw the top on, and have quite an effective missile. I think that's the reason behind it. Whatever it was, it was stupid.

Yeah apparently they do it in England at some Stadiums as well and it is the concern about throwing them..

same happened to me at westpac events centre here in Chch at some concerts, lady took the lid off & gave me the bottle, I told her I dont want it with outthe lid (will get knocked over & spilt), she offered me a beer - I said if i cant be trusted with a bottle of fizz I surely couldnt be trusted with a cup of beer. Next concert I went to there I took my own lid (true)  -  blopdy hopeless.

Well If Coke are offering prizes that you win on your bottle cap but then the stadium takes them then it breaches the fair trading act because they are advertising for something you can't win.
