yes it is. NZers are famous for cracking under pressure. the more we practice this part of the game, the more likely it is that we will succeed if it comes down to it.

Definitely a useful skill but there's only going to be so many trainings the squad has together and will they want to spend some of their valuable time on this?  I'm confident Fallon, Wood, Killen, and Smeltz could easily slot a penalty.

Maybe if Herbert just trains the Phoenix for penalties that'll help the remainder of the squad who are likely to be involved in a shoot-out (plus, ofcourse, the Phoenix).

very necessary, the nerves will come when it comes to PK, you can see that even for the professional players out there

England are extremely nervous at taking PKs, C Ronaldo takes a deep breathe before he takes a spot kick

good examples to why you should practice

not sure what that example means:

is it that by practicing you can avoid looking like a self-obssessed prima-donna?

or is it specifically the art of the pre-pen in-breath that we need to focus on?

It would probably help practising them, but if it goes that way it'll come down to who copes best with pressure, and that's not really something you can practise for.

I disagree el grap.  Penalties are as much about technique as mental - and you can practice technical stuff.

Oh, I'm not saying you can't practice it or that it's useless.

But there's a difference between taking a penalty in an ordinary game, and taking one in a shoot-out in a highly important game, especially if you're not used to taking them. I've seen experienced penalty takers bottle it in such situations. But yeah, having a penalty-taking routine, knowing where you're going with the shot, and knowledge you've done it the past (even if only in practice) certainly helps.

The pictures from the Ifill story today look very much like penalty practice.

Agree. The only real way to practice penalties is when there is something riding on it. That's to create the pressure effect in a game situation. What would suit? Loose money, win money, or nuts in a vice that is slowly squeezing...

I stil remember Smeltz missing that penalty in the pre season final last season,I think a lot of people would of felt confident for him to score. PRACTICE ,PRACTICE PRACTICE.

Should we give the Bahrain players the "Silent treatment" from the crowd while they take the penalties? It will play on their minds that over 30,000 people are staring at them while they take it. Thats' not something that they mentally prepare for.

i doubt we have the discipline but

imagine dead silence until the moment the bahrainian pulled his striking foot back -then 40 k of us unleashing a bloodcurdling scream
then total silence for the next lad (who by now is waiting for the scream)

next the 3rd Red steps up

etc ETC

Kind of screwed if they are scouting the forums. They'll be prepared and odd numbered kickers will rock up with ear plugs. All our screams will be moot (mute).
