Mossy 8, critical saves, used his head well, showed leadership
Scott 6 wasn't actually put under a lot of pressure (c.f. what Mulligan had to contend with)
Vicelich 7 Good effort
Siggy 8 Showed that pure gutsy streak that we needed
Lochie 6 Steady
Brockie 5.5 Tracked back well, but not much going forward
Elliot 7 Calm and useful
Brown 5 Chased and harried, but nothing much else
Leo 7.5 Took people on, what a refreshing attitude
Smeltzy 6.5 Did well apart from missing the chance
Killen 5 Well he was at least in the right place to shoot

What do you think?

Aaron Scott was not flashy, but totally competent.

Far better bet than Mulligan. Reliable

I wonder if Killen and Smeltz are too alike in their style of play. The sum total of what they bring to the frontline is not enough.

Tim Brown is just arms and legs. It is an outrage that he is captain. Basically he can't play at this level. I see Billy Harris tabbed the point in the SST.

Thought we played quite well tonight although we did fade towards the end.

Thought Moss was excellent as was Sigmund. Bertos showed good intent but needs that final delivery to finish him off as a player. Killen and Smeltz did well, bar for lack of finishing and seemed to gel nicley, hopefully this will develop further.

Scott did well, wouldn't say he's better than Mulligan like the Stray, rather hid well against far far inferior competition to his predecessor and looks capable at that level.

Hopefully he can go off somewhere and secure a professional contract.

Is Rory Fallon a possibility for our worls cup qualifiers?

It warmed my heart early on to see Siggy come steaming in at that corner, elbow their guy in the face, and then tell the ref to f**k off when a free kick was given against him. That's my boy!

I woder how different things would have ben with him and Nelsen in the heart of Defence for the whole tournament.

Hoefully for the qualifiers, vicelich will stay and join Elliott in the midfield and we can  put Brown on the bench. Like the guy, his attitude and honesty, but we need some one with atleast a little flair in the middle of the park.

I agree that Vicelich should partner Elliot in centre midfield if he is available and Nelsen and Sigmund are both fit. The only worry would be whether their legs held out or not. Brown tries hard and has a good engine, but his passing needs to be more accurate for him to succeed at International level.

If Vicelich is a 7 then Elliott deserves at least an 8....he was MOM for me....everything the AW's did went through him and he was prominent throughout.

Daniel, James....SOMEONE  needs to add creativity in the park and partner Elliot.

               Vicelich

                Elliot

  James                Bertos

Midfield should be something like that.

From what Ive seen in the 3 games Elliott appears to be a decent passer of the ball . If Elliotts going to play in the midfielld there needs to be someone creative beside him. At times Watching that ball going through the midfield was like watching paint dry . Something got to change and i strongly disagree with Vicilich playing in there, like some1 said. Maybe Chris James at least he will offer a bit of spark and maybe link up with the strikers.thegaffa2009-06-21 20:12:54

yeah, Elliott was bloody good. accurate short passes, some bloody good long, raking ones (incl one that split the defense from inside our half for smeltz - who bombed the cross) and also turned over lots of ball putting the iraqis under pressure.

Elliot was superb, just a shame he didn't get much help in the middle of the park. Seems to be getting better with age and has the vision and ability to split defences.  If only the Nix could get him in their engine room

IMO, Brown was appointed vice-captain/captain before he fully established himself and learned his trade at international level which is not acceptable and is unfair on Browny himself.

RH should eat some humble pie and admit he was a little hasty with that decision. Give Brown a bit of a breather and take some of the heat off him for now, let him work his way back to form with the Nix and if he is putting his hand up again then reselect for AW's but not as VC.

Does anyone get the feeling Browny is undroppable tho? Kind of get the feeling he has an RH security blanket wrapped around him pretty tight.........

For the good of the team and if we are to have any chance at making the WC we need to get someone else in the middle, Chris James deserves another crack after performing well there against Malaysia, sure the level of opposition was much lower but he showed spark, creativity and a bit of flair which are in desperate need of!

Enough strikers already without Costa, and I though Danial wasn't eligible for a couple of months or something.

Brown's a trier, gutsy, blah blah blah, but he is a terrible passer of the ball/reader of the game. I hope The Nix have enough decent players that he doesn't start most of our games.
I like tautologies because I like them.

I like Brown as a character as he represents what NZ football is all about (guts, guts and guts) but unfortunately guts won't take us to the WC. I have no problem with him being the guys brought on at 70 mins to mark a man out of the game and hold a lead but he is not a starting XI player IMHO. I agree with all about that he is too similar a type of player to Elliot with a tenth of the vision and accuracy. NZ will work with a 4 1 3 1 shape the 3 in the midfield being Bertos, James and possibly Smeltz just playing in behind. We just dnt suit a 4 4 2 formation guven our crop of players.. and having Brown in the middle exarcerbates the problem.

I think that's the problem right there!

Brown isnt an international soccer player at all no way no how.  He set up at least one of Italys goals for them ffs!

Moss looked awesome stopping shots but is ihe the new Utting and not really top class just very busy in thees tournaments.????

Mossy's been class. Well kept clean sheet yesterday, and most of the other goals were down to shoddy marking and the class of the Spanish.

If Brown's not up to it, who holds the midfield while Elliot is the man further forward dicatating the play. Vicelich? Oughton? Wish we had McKain

Ummm, think you'll find it was Brown playing in front of Elliot young Oska, not the other way round.

Struggle to see a ready replacement though.

Maybe James?

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Only really noticed his clumsy tackles, whereas Elliot found a bit more time on the ball and looked to move it forward. TBF it usually ended up going back to the defence.

Not sure which games you were watching, but Brown is not in the same class as Leo.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid
