Paston 6 didn't have a lot to do, a couple of moments of confusion
Mully 6 Not linking with others as well as I'd hope. Solid
Nelsen 7 Did well, not needed at any great level tonight
Sigmund 7 Strong
Locky 7 Not needed defensively very often, some good fwd runs
James 8 good to see someone taking on defences. Pity about his shooting
Elliot 9 a commanding performance
Oughton 7 sound, reas creative too
Brown 6.5 did the defensive job well enough
Smith 7 strong and fairly quick
Smeltz 8 scores the goals
Plodder 7 nice goal, might be pushing for a game with the Nix
Boyens 5 had little to do

What do you think??

James and Smeltz by far the best, Elliott very good too. The backs didn't really have much to do, but agree on your comments about Mulligan.

Very disappointed with Brown, some dodgy first touches and poor passes, especially in the first half, and a stupid yellow card. Smith seems to lack a bit of poise and composure to play up front at the international level. But made a couple of good incisive runs, the pull back to Elliott in the second half was very good.

Bit confusing that Smeltz is rated lower than Elliot?!?!

I'd give James 8.5, Smeltz 8.5, Elliot 8 and Brown 5. Maybe 7.5 for Lochhead too as his crossing was pretty damn decent.

i dont see how elliot got so high?!
he didnt make any passes over 10 metres until about 10 to go, his passes were jus running getting the ball from the back 4, then playing it back, didnt turn out and switch play, lucky we had james playing in midfield, the only one trying to get the ball forward and get creating. brown was poor, touch was bad, never wanted to get forward and support, looked a bit out of depth last night.

Smeltz, James an Elliot were our best players.

Smeltz is quality and scored goals, James had excellent first half both on the ball and with some of his delivery (although he got sloppy and took some average options in the latter part of the game). Elliot started slowly, but was pulling the strings and running the show in the second half.

I should add an honourable mention for our centrebacks - who were bloomin solid, but perhaps bc of our dominance didnt have the opportunity to stand out

I was at the game, so might have a different perspective than many who watched it on the tv.

paston 5 - Didn't really have anything to do, distribution was average at times.
mulligan 5 - Did okay, but lacks vision when he has the ball.
nelsen 7 - Not really challenged, didn't do anything overly good or bad.
sigmund 7 - Solid
lochhead 7 - Solid enough at the back, did some nice work down the left.
oughton 5 - Didn't notice him too much.
brown 4 - Seemed pretty non existant all game.
elliott 9 - Excellent, very good passer of the ball, values posession highly and doesn't resort to long ball nonsense. Very impressed with him.
james 8 - Adds much needed spark, urgency and creativity. He is an absolute must starter in this All Whites team.
smith 6 - Some good runs, lacked the quality finishing touch/shot.
smeltz 8 - Doesn't necessarily create a lot but as always is an excellent finisher with good composure when it comes to scoring goals.
boyens 6 - Solid enough but didn't have much to do
Christie 7 - Nicely taken goal.

Yeah and we're rating him on this game, not on his future potential.

It's because Elliot did that job so well, I'm glad he wasn't trying to spray 50 metre passes. He just made the right decision every time, whether to play a one-two, whether to open out, whether to play it back, whether to slip it thru to James. He was always available to support the ball carrier. just excellent centre midfield play. I would love to see someone do that for the Nix. Does that explain why I rated him highly?

Totally agree  OiOi! Simon had a fantastic game. If the Nix had him and he was playing like that we would be looking real good!!

its an anchormans job. check out Senna from Spain. just play sensible and promote the ball. Later in the game he chose to find the man on the wing with a long ball. Did it well. This type of player can be compimented with someone with flair like James

Christie should be at least a 7 just for the stick he got after the game

Although he did look quite good of what I saw, few decent touches

I think James is severly over-rated...elliott much better on the night ..James reminds me of Kris Bouck

i was at the game and Elliott, Lochead, Sigmund and Smeltz all had great games. Midfield played well and closed down new caledonia very well. James also added a spark, very skillfull. The whole team played pretty well.

agree strongly with the 3 or 4 people who have pointed out the importance of Elliot's role and the skill with which he carried it out

chris james added a lot but it was the fact that  Elliot was leading the team in retaining posession that allowed players like James attack the player infront of him knowing that he was going to be able to find payers who had made runs into good spaces

it didn't always come off for him, but Chris james is one of te few new Zealanders who can beat a man one on one.

I was impressed with Elliott, and as a usual critic of Christie, i thought he did well.

However I thought Brown was  dire. It troubled me that he took the captain's arm band when Nelsen went off. He was awkward in everything, even his body shape and technique, and struggled to execute 10m passes without hitting to the wrong side of a man, wrongly weighting them, or making them bobble.

Enjoyed the night up there. Great to catch up with so many forum people, and so many fans from the old Bloc 5 days.

And great to see Kevin Hart from Blenheim again. (We normally only seem to meet overseas). Kevin was the only All Whites fan to make the trek to New Caledonia. A real fan.

as well as beating the man, James also played some superb balls

e.g. out wide to meet the runs of Lochy one of which led to the cross for the first goal

and to Smith (?, or someone on the right) who then pushed the ball to Mully - who almost unked it before scrambling  to Smeltz for his second
