Socceroos play many "home" matches in England in recent years, can All Whites follow?
there are some All Whites players in English clubs

& many Latin American countries play "home" friendlies in USA
they may not willing to travel to NZ, but All Whites can play with them in USA

I'd rather have All Whites home matches played in NZ to increase exposure to both the sport and our better players. Playing home matches overseas focuses on the short-term benefits (money) rather than the long-term (fanbase/playerbase development).

Well the All whites did play Australia in Fulham, London in 2005.

The problem with home games is trying to convince reasonable opposition to come down to NZ. The teams that might come, like Malaysia etc are unlikely to draw decent crowds and so wont exactly help the promotion of football.

I think touring Europe and getting a few games like we have in the past is the best bet. Just having squad depth and available players is the issue. i.e cancelled games on their last tour. Although if we new we were going to draw against wales. We might have wanted to go ahead with the Ukraine game.

I'm not gonna deny that there would be more bums in seats were a match played in the UK, but personally I'd rather see, say, 5000 kiwis show up than , say, 20,000 britons. Nothing against the British of course haha but merely that those 5000 could be inspired enough to spread the sport in whatever way they can.

Now all we need is the right marketing...haha

At the Fulham - Aussie vs NZ game there was probably about 3000 kiwis and 17,000 aussies.

Maybe I am exagerating. lol

I think we should play more home games too. a little tournement with some asia countries and maybe a fiji.

Maybe an annual tri-nations.

Yeah but they're expats lol.

Football tri nations would be awesome, especially if we got some matches here in Wellington, what with Christchuch and Jafaland getting the lions share thanks to their capacities... at least we're getting the league test

We'd never get South Africa to agree to something like that. They've got their hands full over in Africa, and they'd have nothing to gain from a tri-nations type tournament. We might be able to arrange a friendly or two against them since they won't be going through qualifying for the 2010 World Cup, but that's about it.

Other than that, the All Whites really face a Catch-22 situation. At the moment, the only way to get reasonable opposition is to play overseas in Europe and the Americas at some ungodly hour here in New Zealand. This makes it difficult to get the All Whites profile up at home, and the friendly nature of the games makes it difficult to get all our players involved. On the other hand, getting decent opposition and all our best players to come to New Zealand for a friendly is immensely difficult.

The long-term solution for NZ football is to follow Australia's path and join the Asian Confederation. This would ensure regular games against decent level opposition in qualifying for both the World Cup and the Asian Cup. The All Whites would have annual exposure in NZ by playing tough games that actually have a lot riding on them, and I believe our overall competetiveness in the international game would improve. The immediate downside is that the path to the World Cup would be much more difficult than it is right now, and the path to the Confederations Cup, virtually assured now, would be even more difficult. However, I really don't see us being competetive at the Confed Cup as the things stand right now, and if we somehow manage to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, we'd struggle mightily there as well. For long-term health of NZ football, we really need to look to Asia.

I knew this conversation was heading for that toilet-bowl of a discussion. I just knew it.

Explain?

I think its been discussed before it would be greai if somehow the Oceania winner could then qualify to join the Asian confederation (kind of like our route to WC). Would give us more quality opposition at home and more for the island nations to play for too.

Heck, maybe the OFC should just be absorbed by the Asian confederation :P

I know there are a quite a few people opposed to this idea, but I am yet to see a half-decent argument for their being so.

Oceania should join the Asian confederation, and then the Asian confederation needs to be split into two new confederations:East Asia and West Asia.

NZ and the Pacific Islands + Japan, S & N Korea, South-East Asia, and China could be in the East Asian confederation, while all of the Asian countries to the west of India and Sri Lanka (including those two nations) should become part of the West Asian confederation.

The attainment of "full" status for the OFC was one of the worst things that ever happenned to football in NZ.  Put the game back years, but did get Charlie Dempsey a seat on FIFA and lots of nice trips around the world.

The sooner this sham of a confederation gets absorbed back into Asia the better and the sooner that NZ will also have a more serious set of benchmark teams that we can compete against on a regular basis.  It's no fun playing a bunch of 5th rate teams every four years just to be thrown pathetically underprepared against proper opposition.  Even with Australia in Oceania, it meant that we hoped for a four year fluke (unless Vanuatu had their fluke against us, of course!) to then have the chance for ritual humiliation.

The current set up really doesn't do us any favours.

What I meant was it's just the same discussion every time. You can read like 4 other threads and find the exact same posts.

It kind of circles around it, then plunges in like a toilet bowl. Hence the anaglogy.

No worries, it's just that I've had a few heated arguments over this with some other people.
