I asked him on his facebook profile since i am argie, journalist and used to play  football till my leg injury, and he said  that he  may declare for  NZ   that  it may be his final  decision after xmas time.-

W Reid inside as  right back  will solve the rb problem that  nz was having

my question  for u nz fans  is  who is going to get  drop from the preliminary roster

my hint is that  bannatyne/ scott/ mulligan   will  not make the final roster  if everyone is  injury-free...  and  spoonley /hayne/coombes will make the final cut instead

and herbert  will line up  an attacking minded  roster  for the world cup

PLUS  TOMMY SMITH/ REID/ CHRIS JAMES  /MOSS

and the final spot will be for one  from  OUGHTON/ brockie /barbarouses or MULLIGAN  will make the  final 23

do you have any gossip  or insight about it ...  since the world cup is jut  in 3 months time to cut the final roster

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
by the way  as it is public knoledge CABAAS  will not make it  for paraguay and  that is  a major blow since  he is  very similar  to  CARLOS TEVEZ,  in looks and way  of playing

I'd drop Mulligan for Reid.
Then, assuming Moss' appeal fails I'd bring in Spoonley along with Bannatyne and Paston but if Moss wins then drop Bannatyne.*

I know Ricki said all 18 involved in the Bahrain match would go to the world cup but that was a foolish promise and if he sticks to it then he's an idiot.

*Anyone heard how the appeal's going?  I heard they were going to give it another go.

Any update on Reid.  I think he's the best NZer not currently available for the nation.  I'd like to think that Ricki and NZF are working hard to rectify this.

I'd imagine Ricki will be waiting until after the nix season to maybe go see him in person? or maybe Glading might go see him.

Well, Javier, after xmas is too late for us.

He won't come to us anyway.    (Just like how I said we have no chance in pen shootout v Perth)

Reid has pulled the plug on NZ, Just read his reply on facebook and there is no way he is going to lower his football standeds buy becoming a All White.

Bit Part for Denmark and probably never appear at the Con Feds or World Cup or future star for NZ.

Choosing NZ and playing at the WC would be a great shop window for him to move up to a better club, ala French, German, British, Spanish or Italian and away from Danish Footie.

Well his responce to me was about if he was being selected for the Austria friendly (Austria Vs Denmark). He wouldnt think twice about joining the Danes before the kiwi's.
Morten Olsen would be mad not to pick some fresh blood for the friendly.....Then again his team selection has'nt changed at all for the past 2 years when it comes to defenders.

Well, if I ask him on facebook he could see all his support and decide (based solely on my pressure) to join NZ, or he'd get pissed off and think "those Kiwi's are so pushy, Denmark it is regardless of whether or not I'm selected".  I don't know what to do! loyalgunner2010-02-24 22:08:55

Denmark made the WC too did they not?

What a conundrum...is he good enough for Denmark now?....if not, he could play World Cup football for NZ now. Really depends on his desire to play on the international stage, though this could also have consequences on his club career.

Remember Denmark aren't a half-bad European side, with a fairly good qualifying record for the WC/Euros.

Your right but I don't think Denmark is the team it was

Well the Austria game is 3 days away and Olsen's line up does not include Reid!.
I couldnt be botherd asking him again, I think Seatts was right - His Father (reid) wont have a bar to do with Winston being a kiwi international. Prob wants to, but worryed about any type of rejection he would get from his dad etc.

whoever it is, Ricki(preferebly) or someone from NZF needs to sit down with him and his dad/step dad and explain how he is more valuable to play for us than the Danes. He could possibly walk out of the world cup with a contract to play for a more classier team than his current one.

There is too many positives towards playing for NZ to throw the opportunity away.

tbh his dad/step dad is holding him back. Hope he realises this before it is too late.

I dunno much about him but am I right in saying he's a classy player, but it would be either fringe of Denmark or one of the best players in the NZ team?
Permalink Permalink
about 16 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Well I agreed. I think he would be buggered in the Dane team by being on the fringes and not getting much game.

Or he can enjoy the game time and play teams like Mexico, Italy, Brazil, Australia, Chile, Wales, Solvenia, Serbia, Bahrain etc that we are going to play or have played in recent times since Ricki has taken in charge. What's wrong with Confederation Cup and some of the warm ups we have taken??

I beat that he will be named for a few international games for the Danes and then he wouldn't get any chance later on like what happens to most young promising players in these European teams.

Unless he is know to pulls out a few literally stunning performances which is talked about, then frankly he is missing a real opportunity to live it up with the Kiwi team which are on the rise and getting recognition as well as being part of a crucial moment of time for Kiwi football where legends are spoke of. In the Dane team he wouldn't be as respected as he would be in the NZ team.

Forget about him. We're very lucky to be getting Tommy back....players should not be allowed to play for another country unless they have some kind of family connections to that country, or  have double nationality (which is Tommy's case). I doubt that Winston had any connections to Denmark when he applied. Portugal is doing that with its national team (3 brazilians now recieve regular call-ups) and I just hate it. I think it kind of takes that sense of national pride away from the game.
And by this I also mean that I don't agree with Daniel being able to play for the AW in 2012. If he has any kind of connection to NZ then I stand corrected and agree, but from what I know, he's been here for 3 years, what if he recieves an offer from an european club and goes to play there? He will be a NZ international for having played here for 4/5 years and because he would never have a chance of playing in his original country! National teams are not football clubs.
Obviously, there are far worse cases in other countries (Marcos Senna is the most spanish guy I've ever seen haha).

Slightly different but I struggle with the French team.  I love them, yes, but they take so much of the talent out of Africa.  "These guys came from French colonies, many of them moved to France later on in their lives if they weren't born there in the first place", people say.  But having such a monopoly on African players is pretty much rewarding colonialism in my eyes and gives an overwhelming advantage to one side.

I mean you couldn't just bar them from representing France but I think most would agree it's an advantage.  Portugal gets it as well with those Brazilians mentioned above plus players from Mozambique/Cape Verde.

If Reid is yet to get a call, fair enough he continues to look at playing for the Danes.

But I don't love the All Blacks.  And you couldn't call Fiji/Samoa/Tonga anything close to colonies.  And the Cook Islands, Niue etc are a bit different still.

Would be interesting seeing a strictly kiwi All Blacks team.  They'd probably be even more boring to watch.

EDIT: and the closest the AB's come to taking talent out of Africa would be in the form of Andrew Mehrtens (born in Durban).

Really?? If Ricki hasn't called him, he surely had heard about him. I thought that he has been in contact with him over the time and he has not decided at the time. Ricki has been busy the last recent weeks. However after the Mexico game and the Phoenix playoffs when he has some time, I think that he will have a wee talk to Reid eventually before finalising the squad.

What's this about waiting for Ricki to call. IF I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY FOR NEW ZEALAND I WOULD NOT BE WAITING FOR THE COACH TO CALL ME. I WOULD BE ON THE BLOWER STRIGHT AWAY WANTING TO KNOW WHAT I COULD DO!!!!!!!!
If he's waiting for Ricki to call, he doesn't want to play for us enough for my liking

That's what I said to him. I showed him this forum and he said it's nice to have some fans etc... so I suppose the next time anyone bumps into Ricki (possibly TAB) they could ask him about Winston.

Depends on the individual. Plus because of age group internationals for the Danes it wouldn't be a good look chasing another country while still being involved for another. You don't cut off your nose to spite your face.

It's a bit of a tight spot for him as he will be wanting to please everyone so he doesn't burn any bridges etc..

still got until end of April(I think) until squad finalised.

Samoa used to be part of NZ, but yeah, I stretched a bit on that point. Poetic licence if you will

I'm not too fussed on the AB's recruitment policies, and it's not like my Wallabies are innocent either. Was just amused by the parallel.

BUT ENOUGH OF THAT BORING EGG CHASING CRAP. Back on to Reid. Main question - if he commits to Denmark, will we see and account named BringBackWinston?

His responses to my most recent interrogation of him on facebook.  Must be very patient, or at least his frustration isn't really manifesting itself in the text.

Ryan: Hey man, can we look forward to seeing you running out with the All Whites or are you still unsure?

Winston: Coach has not called me so I don't know..?

Ryan: True, the Phoenix have made the semi-final so he's probably trying to focus on that first which is understandable

If he called would you be keen?

Winston: i will have to talk to him about that , but i would not deny anything..

Ryan: OK, cool as.

Winston: No worries loyalgunner2010-03-04 00:59:47
