23 get to go and Ricki has virtually declared his 18 last night are all packing to go. Leaves 5 more
Any ideas?
I disagree with Fred when he wrote in the DP that Moss will stay home by virtue of his ban which has two more games. I would take him. NZ owes him big time after Gladings massive cock up

I guess some names to throw into the mix depending on form over the next  8 months or so are:

Moss
Steven Old
Chris James
Kris Bright
Duncon Oughton
Brockie
Jeremy Christie

Maybe we can find another couple of Woods by then :)

If we build it, they will come...

Still Moss would be pretty unlikely to get game time after Pastons efforts last night. Costa maybe, if he continues to perform for the Phoenix. Would love to see Jeremy back.

Since Costa and Rojas have been training with the AWS then you'd expect them there?

Yeah, good point about Costa. It would also be great if tommy Smith and winston reid became eligible.

what about michael fitzgerald?....sorry couldn't resist.

Id say mossy. Brockie. Old. Oughton. Bright. James. Maybe Christie. Maybe Costa? Doubt Rojas unless he gets more game time.

Do we drop Elliot though? Sure he is immense, but at 36 next year, thats quite past it in terms of a central midfielder. Of course he's gonna want to be there

I'd keep Elliot in the squad for the experience he'd bring.

From all I've heard about Winston Reid you wouldn't think he'd want to play for NZ.  I think it was HN, a few months ago, said he was good enough to be in the Danish squad.

Michael White doesn't deserve to be in the squad, nor does Brockie.  I'd put Jarrod Smith in the reserves probably.  Hopefully he lands a contract, though.

Obvious choices are:

Old, Moss, Oughton, Brockie and James

Would hope that a chance to play in the WC would convince Reid and Smith to change alegencies.

Watching the game from London, esp with neutral English commentators was good for not letting the moment get too out of hand.

We need to play 4-4-2 and Ricki really needs to get either Scott in the Phoenix or another pro team and seriously consider playing either Oughton or Old at RB in some freindlies as I'm sure against teams like Brazil, England etc we will get cought flat footed.

Javier, I'm pretty sure the ban is for WC games as well.  Moss will be there though, I'd say.  Not much back-up, and even if it was only for the one game, he'd be there.

Two years ago, yes. TBH I like Campbell, going back to his Kingz days BUT those two are a world behind the other mentioned here now... kinda like A-League Socceroos, second stringers

Also Durra falls in the same category as Daniel doesn't he?

Hasn't Durrante played for Australia? Jeff Campbell doesn't tackle and thats the reason he has faded away from even the NZFC this year. Good footballer but more finesse than physical.

I'd be very surprised if the 5 names are not listed in the mix below. Thats about all the ones I can think of

Glen Moss
Jacob Spoonley
Chris James
Adrian Webster
Costa Babarouses
Marco Rojas
Jeremy Brockie
Jeremy Christie
Steven Old
James Pritchett
Allan Pearce
Jeff Flemyng
Kris Bright
Duncan Oughton
Kris Bouckenooghe
Jarrod Smith

Add Winston Reid and Tommy Smith to that list, if they switch allegiances they'l be straight into the mix surely.

Also, how does it work if we need 3 keepers, have a squad limit of 23 but 1 isn't allowed in the squad for the first two games? Not sure if that makes sense...

Its a waste of a spot,he'll only be available one game (maybe 2 if we make the next round),and we'd still need then a 3rd keeper to act as cover for Paston in the first 2 games. But then i guess 3 keepers in a squad of 23 is standard?

Allegedly

Moss is in, he is still NZ's best keeper, although Paston is gaining more fans.

Winston and Tommy Smith would make it (assuming they cahnge over, i think tommy would be the more likely of the two), Tommy plays rb for ipswich so say goodbye to Scott. (Straight swap). With Winston in the mix even Sigmund can be pushed out to rb if needed.

Chris James comes in to the midfield and then costa and Brockie aswell. There's your five extras, plus a swap.

I read this comment in the Dom Post today about the others to be added to the 18 in the team squad yesterday

"It's hard to see that group  including Melbourne-based goalkeeper Glen Moss who still has two matches to sit out on a four-game ban for swearing during the Oceania phase of the World Cup qualifiers. Under that scenario there would appear to be little point in taking him to the republic."

Why would Ricki pick Winston Reid and Tommy Smith? I seriously doubt he would and I wouldn't want him too either.

This last week has shown us how much of a 'team' these guys are. They started and fuelled the marketing campaign from their own earnings via the PFA money, Tim Brown alluded to some of the struggles they had on 'that' trip to South America which forced some players into retirement and the treatment of Glen Moss with his send off and ban. These guys really came together and did it which is more than some other high profile sports/teams do. For a player to say 'yes I will make myself available for New Zealand' throws up interesting questions

- Why didn't they make themselves available earlier?
- Why are they making themselves available now?
- What does it say to a player whom would go but misses out for players that are now 'available'?

Those players wouldn't declare themselves available unless they knew they were going to be picked. They would have needed an indication from Ricki that he was taking them. As a player, why declare yourself when you wont get picked? Its not like we attend the World Cup regularly. Ricki has been a relatively loyal coach to his players who have been there for New Zealand. Sure he picked up McGlinchy and Fallon but that was done before we qualified and they became part of the squad. They made themselves available when it was a still a possibility we only 'might' go.

The answer is all because those players are not interested in New Zealand and its a self serving move to get to the World Cup because as of yesterday, we are now going. Thats very much un-Kiwi like.

Sentimental? Yeah but I'd hate to be the one to tell a Brockie or a Christie 'Sorry mate, your services are not required as I've picked a guy whose just made himself available for the team and never played for us before.'

If that player adds some serious quality to the squad though, you'd be stupid to use that logic, we want the best possible squad at the World Cup, the massive core of the squad will be retained.

Isn't that what effectively happened to Brockie with McGlinchey for the qualifying squads though? Or would he not have made it anyway? Something to consider.

The  chance to play at a World Cup would be a fairly decent incentive imo

Brockie was injured for much of the beginning of the A-League season. He's only played a bit-part for North Queensland so far (though he's looked OK when given a chance) and so was not match fit for the first leg and he hadn't made enough of a case for the second leg form-wise.

When it comes to adding five players to go to SA, I think he'll be right in the mix if he impresses for NQF.

Our midfield will be interesting come next year.

With James fit again he should be pushing for a starting spot along with Elliott, Brown and McG. 4 players two spots... good problem to have.

Yes and no. McGlinchey threw his lot in with us when we weren't confirmed to be going. He made the choice of 'Well if NZ don't go, I'm still making myself available'

The only reason Reid and Smith would say yes is because its a ticket to the World Cup, not because they wanted to play for NZ.
