Hi All

Im just looking into my WC trip and am thinking If I spend all that money I want to have the time of my life. That includes seeing sights and partying. Does anyone know about the viability of these extra curricular activities in South Africa (especially in terms of safety)?.

I'm hearing from some people here that they are hiring private security when they get to SA.

You need to expand more on what you are saying above. Especially places like Johannesburg, where it's as dodgy as hell from all report, day or night.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

I would have thought double bagging would be standard procedure in Africa.

But seriously, you know just things like going out at night and looking round during the day, Mainly In Areas where NZ play and national parks, beaches etc.

And carry guns. Or flame throwers.

it's really not that bad, just be sensible and take normal precautions.  i'm not saying bad stuff doesn't happen, just that it might not be as likely as you think.

the areas where NZ is playing would normally be much safer than say downtown Joburg, but i guess there probably is a risk that during the WC criminals may travel to the areas where camera and cash carrying tourists are waiting to be exploited.

private security seems a bit OTT, but then again if you are in a big tour group, i guess you could be a target, and if there are a lot of you to pay for it then it would be quite inexpensive.

national parks etc - this isn't where the crime happens, just don't mess with any hippos.

and for the record, double bagging is actually a bad idea, the friction between the two means a tear in both is likely

I imagine security in such areas will be majorly beefed up for the WC,you will be well looked after. Otherwise yeah safety in numbers of course.

Allegedly

I think there are some big misconceptions about South Africa. People often associate it with the reality of the rest of the continent, when actually it has nothing to do with, say, Senegal or Congo. Trust me, it is a totally different world from the rest of Africa. Regarding you NZ guys, I wouldn't be too concerned about walking around towns like Nelspruit or Polokwane...they're pretty calm. Obviously, you should pay attention to your surroundings at all times, because there will be a lot of people around, and you never know. But private security is just unnecessary. Treat it as you would if you were walking around a big European city...and avoid the suburbs of big towns (and central Jo'burg), as you would in Europe ;)

I actually found South Africa a bit worse than some other places in Africa. I reckon its because there is a huge divide in wealth, whereas in other countries in Africa everyone is poor so no one gets jealous. Having said that, so long as you're not a dumb ass you shouldn't have any problems - I didn't and are looking forward to going back. Remember there are still several million white people living there quite happily, and several million black people for that matter too.

Pathetic. Not apathetic.

DANALDO, I agree with you. Just a remark: generally speaking, I think SA is probably the country in Africa where you lot will feel more comfortable (or civilized). And do believe me, I was caught in the middle of a shooting riot in Kinshasa, while I was travelling in an overcrowded urban bus...

I nearly burst into tears, as I was in my mid-late teens by then. Because the thing is, you get the sensation that you can't really do anything, and you feel a lot of anger as well, because it has nothing to do with you. Luckily, the bus was only shot once but no one got injured (I think it hit the tyres, though I can't really remember that day nor do I make an effort to), and we all managed to leave the bus on foot and make our way to the hotel. We never left it again and actually left Congo 4 days earlier. Central Africa is a big no-no for me ever since. I'm just too civilized to see wilderness in the form of living organisms other than animals.

Key to safety in SA is too look like you mean buisness.

Wear a suite, big black sunglasses, don't shave, and you'll have no trouble.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

BBC website says that only 450000 tickets have be sold to countries other than SA. The last WC it was 1 million.
The reasons are that there are too few flights and the fear of lack of security.

2 million tickets have been sold to South Africans.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid
