Just enjoying watching the game again.

They are a filthy bunch of diving cheats aren't they?

They were so cocky when they got that penalty like they had won the game. Filthy. Shame on their players but yeah the fans were really cool

Suck players (With a couple of skillful exceptions) and brilliant fans that deserve better. I still cant get over their polite, positive and genuine friendliness even in defeat. A real credit to Bahrain. We should play them here again as part of our build up next year and make sure their fans are brought with them. Lonegunmen2009-11-15 17:46:34

I think the best way to describe the penalty is karma kicking them up the ass, i mean lets be honest you don't go have a party when you get given a penalty, the crowd might but the players shouldn't

Agree - the players are diving cheats, but their fans are top-notch. The guys I shook hands with exiting the stadium were gracious and complimentary towards the AW's. Would we have been so gracious had the boot been on the other foot? I hope so, but I rather doubt it.

the only things i disliked about them were the celebrations when they one the penalty and all the diving.

on the other hand they applauded us when they f**ked off down the tunnel with their tales between their legs at full time.

i don't even think they went over to their own fans (maybe they did but i was dancing around too much to take notice of them fellas in the red strip)

Thank you Whoooooo. The Bahrainian fans have shown brilliant sportsmanship in defeat, we should display the same as the winning fans. I think they have made plenty of friends on here and they are more than welcome to stay communicating with us and or return to NZ anytime.

Yeah from the guys i met,to what ive heard from people who went there,to others who chatted to them, and even "Bahrain" on this forum...Im suddenly even more sorry that i didnt go to visit their country for the first leg.

Might be tempted if we move to asia and end up playing them in some game in the future.

Their players are still dirty divers/cheats though and idiots for celebrating the penalty

I don't think that Whoooo realise that it is quite an offensive racist/religious term in many parts of the world. His post does not really suggest any intent of malice.

However, great fans they have. They will have their time in the sun one day just not this time.

Yes the glassrolling is a known delayed tactics from the Bahrain players, not sure when they started it that, they never use to do that years ago but in the tough rough road of AFC, they would have pick it up as a tactic for themselves.

A dangerous tactic as the ref can turn on you and that the players can lost focus and control of the game at hand. It is really a tactic to use as you are either ahead in the score line or when the control and the pace of the game is directed by the opposition in the game. We were fortunate that they didn't score or we would have a real hollywood show.

To be honest, this whole thread is stupid. We won fair and square. We don't need to slag their players (or be racial) about it after the fact. Its a bit childish.

Better to look good winners and humble about it than stand here going 'your players suck and you are diving cheats'

I was slagging them off for it before we won the 2nd leg  as were most people i think. It was just further highlighted in that match.

I think Ricki Herbert said it best when he replied about the penalty saying he didn't see it, and didn't need to now.

I think it was a bit over the top the Bahraini team celebrating and praying and whatnot when they were awarded the penaly, and maybe it was karma that bit them in the arse.

But remembering the team had a lot of pressure riding on them, they were showing signs of being desperate for any chance they had.

Full credit to the Bahrain fans, they showed up and appeared to make a lot of noise at the start of the game, but I couldn't hear them from the WN area.

I flew up to Auckland this morning, and the plane had a number of Bahrain supporters on it, me wearing my All Whites shirt. They all looked rather somber, as you could imagine, but the fans of Bahrain did their country proud, and would be great to play them more often (even for friendly games) :)

Once again, Bahrain fall at the final hurdle in World Cup qualification.

They really do lack that mental toughness on the big occasions. As for the penalty, nothing wrong with thanking God for getting a penalty in your favour (lets not get religion into this too), but celebrating as if you have scored is pretty silly. Don't think thanking God = celebrating. As with the kick itself, that was, as I've stated a number of times now, a pathetic penalty taken. Adnan looked very nervous and I knew he was going to miss.

The credit I can give to Bahrain is that they have done very well in international football for a country of their size. They've achieved a lot for a nation of 700K.

With regards to the diving and time wasting, that is common across nearly all the Gulf nations. As someone of Lebanese heritage and having followed Asian football for a number of years now, this is nothing new.

At the end of the day, Bahrain just couldn't lift their game when they needed too, while New Zealand did exactly that.

soccernet article said that the bahrain players and coaches etc didn't turn up to post-match responsibilities.

sure, they obviously have a right to be incredibly despondent and upset, but pretty poor form - i am sure that NZ would have obliged regardless of the result.

This thread is sort of like kicking a dog when it's down.

HOWEVER...

I did feel sorry for the supporters - the team just went straight for the tunnel at the end. No going over to acknowledge the small but vocal group of supporters.

Sorry for kicking the dog, but it's not the fans' fault that the penalty was saved.Junior822009-11-16 00:45:28

From what I saw on TV, I don't think that their reaction to getting the penalty was over the top - if away from the cameras they were running around the pitch waving their shirts above the heads and sliding on their knees that would have been over the top.  Teams celebrate winning penalties as it is a pretty big thing - in a game this big it is a natural reaction, and I am sure we would have reacted in a similar way if we were awarded one at the same stage of the game.

I'm in the same boat.  If we had lost the game (even if I was in a minority fanbase at the stadium) I would have been absolutely filthy and just avoided everyone.

Met a few Bahraini fans at McDonalds, poor chaps were crestfallen.  Shook hands, had a yarn and wished them best for the future.

What gets me is a number of their players are not Bahraini (African for the most part of the foreign contingent), prime example being Jaycee John.  Now I know there can be legitimate reasons for this (moved to Bahrain as a child or whatever) but would I be correct in guessing that some of them weren't quite good enough for their national teams and were lured over with money?  I don't want to jump to conclusions yet as I honestly don't know, so if somebody can shed some light on this.  Just that I know near-neighbours Qatar were trying to lure Brazillians into their squad using their oil money so I'm suspicious.

Well Fallon was born and raised here for the most part while McGlinchey was born here.  Being a former colony it's expected and somewhat different really.  It only ever bothers me if its for money.  Like I said, Jaycee John and his friends could all have more than legitimate reasons and I hope it's nothing like the whole Qatar case.

Obviously God gave Bahrain that penalty because Adnan had to be punished for his sins, by becoming the man to lose Bahrain the world cup. He must have done something real bad, probably involving snails.

Yeh but nah but yeh but nah but yeh but nah*cough* Smeltz too our best German Aussie Kiwi and lovin it *cough we're citizens of the world as is everyone...if John was number 4 his athletic dink to his feet after writhing on the ground after Siggie was carded was flippin us the bird and I booed him the whole game after that, but I thought our players went down easy a couple of times too, and the ref handled things fairly for the most part.

There was nothing excessive about their celebration and it was very understandable in the context of the tie.

And penalties do get celebrated often enough, especially in highly important games with a lot at stake.

Why even we need to have a thread about this is beyond me. Some people need to get a grip.
